Guys, I have a 2011 JKU w/auto transmission. 6 months old and with 7500 miles. Was in the trails yesterday (light and easy ride, and nothing tough or technical at all) and on the drive back home I saw the "Hot Oil" indicator flashing at me. I shut her down and let it sit for 30 mins to cool. Upon restart, the warning is gone but my check engine light was on. Since I was 30 miles from home, I started the drive.

Only then did I notice that I didn't seem to have overdrive (or even 1st gear for that matter)! I would be at 4200 RPMs at 65 MPH. Never went over 15 MPH in the trails so don't know if the issue was there the whole ride or not but do know that I had no issues at all driving to the trailhead.

Took it to my local Jeep Dealer last night and got the call today that my the rig threw out 4 codes. One is P0732 and one is P0731. First and Second gear syncing errors. I do not recall the other 2 he mentioned but he said they needed to open the transmission and would likely either need a rebuild or a replacement. Said I will be out of commission at least a week.

Anyone have any similar issues? Not happy one bit about this.

Seems to be a recurring problem. Do a search for transmission overheating or coolers and it will tell you all you need to know plus other trans. failures.

It ain't easy being cheesy:

Sometimes I make decisions like famous people.
George Armstrong Custer "lets go over that hill, I think those are friendly indians!"

Titanic's Captain Smith "What icebergs? Full speed ahead!"

Ok guys. I type this final reply with relief, a smile and yet a little embarrassment all at the same time. I got the call from my dealer on Friday afternoon that it was ready to pick up. Of course, they scared me to death by saying "my service director and I will sit down with you when you come in" when I asked on the phone what they had to do.

I got there just before closing and they pulled my Jeep around for me. When I asked what they had to do (replace trans, rebuild trans, etc - which if you remember is what they initially said they'd have to do), they laughed and said "you got lucky. Once our trans tech got it on his hoist, he found that your trans was fine. He found this large stick (ok, small tree) that got wedged into the trans housing where the wire harness sits!".

Apparently, it severed the wires a bit thus allowing only 2nd gear. They pulled the stick out, repaired the harness and off I went. The best part is that they decided to warranty the repair (and pay 100% for the 11 days of rental car expense from Enterprise)!! Plus they completely detailed the truck, inside and out!

I was never so impressed and relieved. In hindsight, I guess I should have looked underneath a bit 'ey? We all laughed and I knew then that I'd never go to another dealership other than Ed Voyles again. Great guys- especially Kenny Ford. So happy for the good ending. Still considering adding a trans cooler though now- especially since I do some light towing on my aftermarket hitch.

Thanks for all of the well-wishes as they worked.

One of my first mods was a tranny cooler. Some said I really didn't need it but I thought better safe then sorry. After stories like this makes me think I did the right thing. Even towed a trailer over mountains with no issues.

I say, anyone with a pre 2012 Auto JK should go to Ebay/Amazon and get a cooler. The one I got is.....................

B&M 70264 Supercooler for automatic transmission
2010 Dark Charcoal Pearl Jeep Wrangler Sport S Automatic
4.88 Yukon w/Trac-Lok rear and Eaton ELocker Front - Synergy Gussets - B&M 70264 Trans Cooler
BDS 3" lift - BDS Fox 2.0 Racing Shocks
XHD front Bumper - Trektop NX - Goodyear MT/R w/Kevlar 35X12.5X15 on MB Chaos 5 Wheels - Thrush Turbo Muffler

Ordered mine last night. Will be installing it as soon as it gets here. Don't like the idea of the "Hot Oil" light coming on just driving up a dirt road in 4hi. Irritating to have that in a new vehicle, especially a jeep, a vehicle designed to go anywhere and everywhere.
Better lucky than good!

I try to avoid automatic transmissions. This is one of the 10 reasons I bought a Wrangler w/std. I am much too hard on a vehicle, and grew up with tranny problems.
