2011 rubicon unlimited hot oil (stranded)

I have a 2011 unlimited rubicon with 8,000 miles. We were two hours from home at a baseball tournament it left us stranded. Temp outside was 92 degrees after coming back between games we parked and left it running for less than five minutes and the engine shut down showing hot oil. Engine never would attempt to turn over. Even after two hours. I did disconnect the battery trying to trick the computer. Ended up calling a wrecker and catching a ride home. It is now at the dealer and we will see what will happen. Jeep is totally stock and was not overworked. I love the jeep but if it can't stand up to city driving what's it going to do when I take it to Colorado in august and put bigger wheels and tires on?

Not normal for sure. Last June I got talked in to taking a friend at the people's fair in downtown Denver. It was hot. Ended up sitting in traffic for a few hours. Had no issues with anything hot except me.

Hot in FLA

I'm here in NW FLA and I was stuck at a RR crossing while the train was switching temp outside was 101. I was at idle for more than 20 minutes with the AC on blast and didn't have any problems. Hope this was some sort of freak thing for your Jeep and not something that we all have to worry about. Good Luck! Let us know what you find out.

Its a hassle, but not going to let it get me down. Love that damn Jeep!!! Probly an easy fix. Thank is is a transmission deal. Ill put a tranny cooler on and call it good. While its at the dealer I might see about a lift and tires. Bad thing is its two hours away.

Sounds like you just need a transmission cooler. Cheap and simple to install as I understand it. I'm sure some of the folks with autos who've put them in will chime in.

Talk to your dealer, part of the warranty, at least lately, because of "LIMP MODE" engine, because of auto tranny heat is for THEM to install a MOPAR aux cooler-and probably free-you gotta press them for the service !!

I got the impression that '11 JK comes with a transmission
cooler? Is it not big enough?

It's not really a cooler

2007 thru 2011 jeep autos use the bottom of the A/C condenser (front of radiastor) as the cooler (warmer) and it's totalyy DEFUNCT !!

The only thing Chrysler has done (untill 2012-maybe) is add an early warning system "hot oil light"--

There have been cases of the DEALERS installing a MOPAR aux cooler--AFTER TRANNY FAILURE-

It's jour jeep so do what you want-

There is a service bulletin that Chrysler issued for mail jeeps advising them to install a cooler.

The dealer called today. The PCM (main computer) is dead and the hot oil notification was a result of the faulty computer. Better than possible damage to transmission.

Leaving it parked and running should not overheat the auto transmission. If fact, if you ever do get the "hot oil light", Jeep recommends pulling over and parking, and running the engine at a fast idle in neutral to cool the transmission.

I also have a 2011 unlimited rubicon. She has 1300 miles on it and that hotoil light already came on as well after playing in the sand for about 20 minutes. Pretty sad huh. My brother is real big into jeeps and says i need to invest in a transmission cooler for it because they do not have one. Well hope it works out. Good thing it's still under warranty.

All 2012 autos have tranny coolers. Did 2011s come with them or is 2012 the first year they are stock?

2011 and earlier, have a tranny cooler (undersized) that is built into the AC condenser. The new 2012's have a separate, larger tranny cooler. For 2011's and earlier, it is highly recommended that you install an additional transmission cooler.

Always turn ESP off when running 4H in the sand.

Always turn it off when ever off roading. The damm thing is dangerous and could get you hurt and your Jeep banged up for sure.
