2011 Vs 2013 JKU

I am close to purchasing my first Jeep, I am deciding between a new 2013 and a used 2011. I am trying to figure out what other differences/options there are between the 2 besides the engine, motor, trans and seats. The 2011 is 30,200 and is a white sahara painted hard top auto the only option i can tell it has for sure is nav 20,000miles. The specs online did not cover everything so i wanted to do a little research before i go to the dealer.

Also, Aside from taking the dealers word for it how could i confirm what gears it has... were the options for 2011 3.21 and 3.73? Did the 2011 have the handsfree bluetooth option with nav?

Last i need to factor in the MPG difference. what kind of difference should i expect? 1 mpg difference i can live with if that is real world... my wife is going to be driving mostly and it will be mainly on the highway... 20mpg would be great but from what i have read may not be obtainable.

Look at the window sticker for the gears or look up the vin. As for mpg difference on highway you can expect anywhere from 2-6 mpg depending on driving style 2013 will have a better resale down the road as well if you decide to get rid of it

Thanks, i did google the vin last night but maybe im looking in the wrong place... is there a way to pull up the window sticker online by VIN?

We plan on keeping for a long time so resale isnt number 1 but certainly a consideration

Any 2011 auto transmission non-Rubicon will have 3.73 gears. No pre-2012 autos ever came with 3.21s, and after 2007 only Rubicons came with 4.10s. So it has 3.73s.

Test drive both to get a sense of the power/driveability differences.

I have a 2010, love it, and will never purposely get rid of it. But if it was suddenly gone, the only way I'd buy a 2007-2011 (especially an auto transmission) if either (a) I was planning on modding it pretty hard, or (b) I was getting a killer deal.

Thanks i drove 2 - 2012s and the power/performance was impressive. I am going to drive the 2011 for a comparison. My wife currently has a honda element so i cant imagine much if any power loss from the 2011 jeep.

No contest: 2013.
Better power, better mileage, would last longer, and if you have the patience to wait, you could order it exactly how you wanted it.
If you off-road at all, a painted top would be a bad choice.

yeah seriously no comparison!

besides that used one will cost you more in the long run because its going to be financed as a Used Car and they are ALWAYS 2-3 points higher then new car loans

Unless you don't care about color and options.
I always buy with exact color and options I want as they're going to stay with me for a long time, and I still got a deal of 12% off sticker. Actually I found used Jeep very often overpriced and isn't that cheaper than getting a new one which is easier to negotiate.

We just got back from a long trip to mucho hot West Texas, and our '11 ran as smooth as clockwork, and burned ne'er a drop of Mobil 1. To be honest though, the best word to describe the 3.8's power is - adequate. But, there is no way we would trade ours in for any vehicle with a Pentatick engine, just because it has more horses. We'll happily wait for the next Wrangler redesign, or a torquey V8, whichever comes first,....if then.

Agreed, I see this same stupid thread on almost every forum out there and pretty much it's stupid.
Should be discussing wrangler vs landcrusier or hummer.

No one is factoring in price?

I got a 2008 4dr Sahara 2 weeks ago w Hard top (and negotiated a soft top as part of the deal). IT HAD 21,000 MILES!
I got it for 23,700 which I thought was AWESOME.

New these things are like 30 to 38,000..

So I wasn't expecting to buy used, but I got a very low mileage Jeep and I figure I probably kept anywhere from 10 to 15,000 in my pocket..to me that was a NO Contest....So money saved/spent should be considered as well. Just sayin.

Another option is a new leftover '12 JKU sport/hardtop, around 26K + tax. 5/100K powertrain warranty.

I agree with bloodfart and get a deal on the 2012. Not much a of a difference betweeen 12s and 13s from what I've heard. Aren't they coming out with a re-vamped jk in 2015ish?

You will do a lot better on resale value with the new engine. However if you truly plan to keep it for a long time resale value shouldn't factor too much into your decision.

If it were me I would go for the '13 just for the engine alone

Optional larger Gas Tank on 2013 but still a possible issue with engine heads

In fact, I think discussion of wranlger vs other makes are even more stupid (and there are many of these threads already) as the answers will be, and have been, always baised and bashing on other vechiles because here is a Jeep forum. And you will see the same disucssions but opposite comments from the forums of othe rmakes.

Thanks for all of the responses, I am going to test drive the 2011 monday to see how much of difference the engine/trans is and if it would be a deal breaker. if i were to get a similarly equipped sahara new it would be in the 38-39K range and i would probably be able to get it for 36K give or take which is still out of my price range. So far the used is 30K and i may be able to negotiate a little more off. The interest rate will play a huge part as well so i will definately be factoring that in as well. If i did not go for the 2011 it would most likely be for a trimmed down 2013 JKU Sport with S Package and dual tops i can get this for 3% under invoice.

I have been following a couple of the ticking pentastar threads and it would appear that they have a fix now but i havent seen anything definitive for if/when the fix went in to production ... With the large amount of 2013's i have seen on lots already im suspecting that there is a chance that some of them could have been built with the old head... time will tell

I'm thinking should be comparing the 2012 to the 2013 should be the subject and asking the question are my heads going to puke or have they solved the issues yet?!?

Explain this logic. Yes, used car loans have a few points higher interest rate. So percentage of interest would be slightly higher. But its based off a much lower principle. Used cars obviously don't cost more than new ones. payments are lower, total interest is lower, total cost is lower.

Maybe I'm missing your point...but used will not be more expensive than new just because of a higher interest rate, thats crazy talk

You have the right idea by driving both and then deciding. Choosing a pre 12 is a personal choice so don't let anyone influence you with their biased opinion about their current ride. I went through the decision process of keeping my current 11 JKU or trading it in on a 12 JKU just a few weeks ago and it isn't an easy decision.

Test drive, test drive......

Also, before I signed papers for a used or a new jeep for that matter, I would ask the dealer to put it through the car wash to make sure it doesn't leak. Nothing would ruin my experience more than finding out that it leaks the moment it leaves the dealer lot. I don't have any leaking problems on my '12, but others do.

This in addition for checking all mechanical items, of course. Good luck.

There was a heapin' helpin' of derision when I bought my 2011 JK at the end of the model year... ...but frankly. I wanted the 3.8 for reasons oft debated elsewhere. I bought new, because I wanted the zero interest payment, and I keep my rides for a quarter million miles. I love it, I really do.

I think that there are some neat new things... but I wouldn't pay a mega premium right now for a pentastar versus a loaded, low mileage JK, if you like accessories. I wanted a bone stock manual two door with 3.73 gears, and they were more rare than gussied up luxo models.

Good luck!

Alright, so to piggy back this thread. I'm also considering several different models of the JKU and I Would like to know how big the difference is in the power. On paper it's quite a sizable difference, but how does that translate to actual use? Looking anywhere from 2009 to 2012.

I have both. I think they are pretty similar around town, the '12 with the 5 speed auto shines when passing on the freeway, or going up and down mountain passes (ie freeways in Colorado or Virginia) where you are at elevation. The 3.8/4 speed hunts alot, the '12/5 not nearly as much.

The interest for used cars around here in NH is 2% at most credit unions. Add in auto pay, and it's 1.75%, which is what I got on my 2k10 two months ago.

I bought used because I wouldn't have been able to get what I WANTED for anywhere near the same money.

Good luck!
