2012 alternator noise

I know that it is definatly the alternator that is the problem I am just wondering if anyone else has had the issue. As of now it is much louder then my engine from the mechanic friends that I have (who are very knowledgable and trust worthy) I am being told it is a bearing that went bad and eventualy it will go bad all togather and depending on what bearing is going seize up the cerpentine belt. Anyone else had this problem or hear that noise? I am planning on contacting the dealer this week to get it fixed.

I think it's because some crap got in there when you were wheeling.
Yeah if that seizes it will tear up the belt pretty quickly.

Sounds like you're getting some use out of your Jeep!
With things being so dry right now one can get pretty far into the pines without doing much more than getting really dusty, altough the fire danger is very high right now.

I'm probably bolting some stuff onto mine this weekend.
Your dad threatened to ditch church to hang with me tomorrow, but I don't know if I want to be the one responsible for him doing that. LOL

Alternator squeal

My JKU Rubicon 2012 (manual) has had what I believe now to be the described alternator squeal since the first week I bought it last August. For months I thought it was coming from the suspension or transmission, but now I'm fairly certain it is high in the engine compartment. I have taken it in two times and nothing was found by the dealer (even when taken home overnight by a mechanic). The problem is that the sound is intermittent and only occurs when the engine is hot. It is pretty infuriating because I can hear it come and go and it can be quite loud when the engine is under load for a while in a low gear. It often stops when I put the clutch in to take it out of gear or rev quick and then coast, but I'm pretty sure that it is not the throwout bearing issue because I can make it happen by tapping the gas slightly when sitting still out of gear with the clutch in or out. Throughout the winter the problem didn't occur as much for me, I believe this is because of the lower temperature and that I don't usually drive very long distances. Lately, the sound has worsened (louder, more constant) and with the warmer weather it occurs daily. I am pretty sure it is the alternator now because I can now hear the squeal with a mechanic's stethoscope even when it is not hot or audible outside of the engine compartment (by touching a groove on the rear part of the alternator). It's really annoying with the doors off because I can hear it loud and clear. I called the dealer to let them know that I plan to bring it in soon when it is making the sound. I'm hoping this just requires a new alternator, has anyone had this issue resolved by their dealer?

So the dealer has replaced the alternator and I picked up the Jeep today. I need to drive it when it is warm to validate if the loud squeal is gone, but with a stethoscope I can still hear a faint high pitched sound when touching the alternator. Hopefully this noise is normal and it won't get louder like before. If it does, it sounds like it might be another component on the serpentine's route that needs to be replaced. I'll update if the noise returns.

Quick update, after driving in warm conditions the noise has not returned as of now. So far, so good.

I have a 2012 jku w/auto and have only put 3500 miles on it. I took it to the dealer today for the same alternator noise as the first post. My alternator is louder than the engine and really loud in park and I rev up. The dealer said same thing, my bearing is going bad. They said that it was from dirt and mud and normally wouldn't pay for it but given the circumstance of on 3500miles on it they sent it to chrysler to get approved for warranty. I find out tomorrow if they'll cover it, but if they don't its $517. So you're not the only one. What was your mileage when it started? Mine started right after my last wheeling and it's only been wheeling twice and both times I've pressure wash the entire engine and under carriage.
