2012 Automatic - Shift Problem

On occasion, my JK will shift into 1st or some other gear all on its own. Instead of indicating "D" it shows 1 or 3 and stays in that gear unless I shift it back to "D" manually.
Anyone else experience this? I'm 100% certain I'm not accidentally bumping the gear shifter to cause this. Has happened 6-8 times in the 3,000 miles I've had the vehicle. Not a huge problem, but a problem nonetheless.
I searched the forum and found nothing. Dealership checked, could not recreate, and found nothing.
Anyone?

The down shift is pretty sensitive. Some times when I go around a right corner and my body leans left while holding the shifter it downshifts. I never really note it when it happens until the RPM swings hi. Several of us have noted this.

My patriot and my Rubi both have this auto "slap type" transmission. I do not have this problem. I read on a forum of people having this same problem. You should take it to the dealer and they will adjust it so that it will shift the way it was intended. If a driver puts it in D. It should stay there until you manually slap it or move to park neutral or reverse.

As sandbaja said I have the same issue once in a while turning corners if I am holding the shifter. I haven't done it in a while now that I am use to it but the day I drove it home I was cranking like 6K RPM before I realized I was in 1st

It has happened to me as well when I have my hand on the shifter, even lightly. Habit from my manual shift days. It is a very light force to shift tho. Hope its nothing major.

Ahh. You are holding the shifter.

Doctor my head hurts everytime I bang it against the wall.

Then stop banging your head against the wall.

Sounds like operator error.

The shift is sensitive. I don't put hand on shift knob unless I want to manually shift or tap downshift. Food for thought.

Sounds like somebody should have gone 6 speed

I have seen quite a few people bumping the shifter by mistake. Like said above it is very sensitive.

I have also done this several times. My hand has either been on the shifter or my wifes purse hit the shifter. Scared the crap out of me the first time it happened but I now keep the hand away from the shifter.

I am experiencing this same issue once or twice a day. AS with Shaunlong, the wife's purse is sometimes a culprit. Obviously a design error as every other vehicle I have ever owned from a Porsche, BMW to Ford has safety features in place to prevent accidental activation of the "triptronic" transmission. It is common, and will cause excessive wear on the tranny, not to mention scare the bejebus out of me.

Not much I am sure Jeep will do, so I am looking forward to anyone who provides a deactiveation code or work around. I just don't need that option on my rig.

Go here to file an online vehicle safety complaint with the NHTSA about this.

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/Vehicl...nt/index.xhtml

Complaints are starting to accumulate on this problem and a few more might end up getting us an investigation that may lead to a recall to fix this. It's our only hope!

Don't just complain, DO SOMETHING!

My downshift was way too sensitive before I had it replaced. Upshift required a deliberate act, but downshift happened with the slightest touch.

Dealer replaced shift mechanism, all is well.

When did you get it replaced?

Mine was replaced last October for this problem. But the new unit is just as bad as the original.

Interesting. I've only had my 2012 for a few weeks, so I'll have to pay attention to this. I put a rocknob on my auto shifter and also rest my hand there from time to time. This doesn't seem to have happened to me yet.

Mine was replaced on Nov 10th 2011. Downshifts now require me to actually move the knob (vs resting my pinky finger on it). It's still a slightly smaller movement than required for upshifts, but I have to *want* to change gears now.

Mine was replaced 24 Oct 2011, so it must just be the luck of the draw???

My service history reads "Transfer case, miscellaneous adjustments" but I had to wait a week for a part to arrive. In other words, I can't say for sure what they actually did to it.

As stated in my post, I'm 100% certain that I'm not bumping it. Nothing is anywhere close to the shifter; not my hand, not a purse, nothing.
I've taken it to the dealer - and they could not recreate or find anything wrong.
I'll continue to take it to the dealer as it continues to occur...
