2012 Dual Top/Soft Top first removal storage questions

So, I've had my 2012 JKU for about 2 weeks. Just took the rear top off, and removed the soft top, which comes installed for delivery with dayglow orange stickers on it saying NOT to drive with both tops installed or it will void the warranty. Couple of questions:

1. My friend and I removed the brackets from the rollbar that had 2 #30 Torx screws on each side. It was super easy to then wiggle and get the soft-top out and off. But in studying the PDF owner's manual, there's a very hard to understand section about this that LOOKS like it is suggesting that you NOT remove the brackets themselves, but remove the bars from the brackets via rubber-malleting some "knuckles"? Am I interpreting that correctly? Why wouldn't you just remove the brackets instead of the bow bars and what are the "knuckles" they're referring to? It came off fine the way I did it, I just don't think it matches what they say in the manual.

2. I bought the car in November, and being in PA, won't be using the soft top until late Spring. My plan is to swap tops every year in March and November. However, since I haven't ever had the soft top up or even unpacked, I am wondering do I need to open it up and remove all the delivery foam packing? Or can it store as-is until Spring when I install it for the first time? Windows are still in boxes etc.

Thanks.

It really is your choice how to unbolt the soft top. ou are the one removeing and re-installing. So no big deal. The top came shippped from thet factory that way, so it is good to go for storage. I would open everything out and lay it out and make sure you get the right parts. Sometimes the 2 Door surrounds get mixed up with the 4 Door sorrounds at the dealership. I have had that happen on an '08 we bought new.

You got the brackets off without removing the arms? How did you get them out from under the roll bar cover? The knuckles where the two arms meet the bracket. I know Bestop makes quick release for the knuckles.

I would think leaving the brackets in would be dangerous for the back seat passangers, especially in a 2 door.

You can store it as is, Just make sure you have everything now. Trying to get missing parts 4-6 months from now will be a pain to say the least. You have the top, 3 windows (2 side and 1 rear). Make sure you have 4 door surrounds, one rear tailgate bar, 2 tail gate bar retainers, and 4 straps (2 velcro straps to secure the sunrider top when open and 2 loops with a single snap so you can roll up the back window) The straps are usually in the glove box.

When it comes time to put the top on, you want a day that is at least 65 degrees. If you have a heated garage then you are golden.

Thanks for the parts list. I will go through the boxes tomorrow.

I may have described this incorrectly. We got the hard top off. Then we just took off the 4 screws that hold both brackets onto the rollbars. Then the whole soft top came up and out with a minimal amount of twisting.

I have to look at it again to understand what "knuckles" are. It is unclear to me what it means and why an aftermarket quick release exists or how it will help. But I am interested.

The knuckles are what detatched from the bracket. Insted of unbolting them, you have quick releases. I'm not sure how they work. I've just seen them online at Q-tec.
