2012 Feedback Wanted

Hello all,

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I used to own a '99 TJ Sahara, and am considering getting back into a Wrangler now.

So, I'm looking for feedback on the '12s with the new engine with the automatic trans.

Would also like to know if anyone's ran into any issues so far, and what you're seeing for highway/city gas mileage.

Thats a great link from Barrie but it doesn't answer your question directly. We just bought a 2012 Sport Unlimited to replace our Saturn Vue. We are rockhounders and the primary reason we bought the Sport is to go places beyond where our Saturn took us. We won't be going over huge rocks or in places that will twist the chassis in ways it shouldn't, and it is used as our DD. Since we are retired, very little of our driving will be off road.

So far we have been very happy. Surprisingly our mileage has been higher than expected as we have been getting about 17.5 mpg. EPA lists it as 16/20 and we haven't been on the interstate to check the latter number as yet. I really expected about 14 or 15 at best so I'm happy.

I can't help you with any questions regarding off road performance but if you have any more about "normal" driving I'll try to help.

The engine is wonderful, lol. just make sure you DO NOT get the 3.21 Gear Ratio and get the Max tow package. Gives you a 3.73 Gear Ratio. Higher ratio gives better acceleration, and you'll have PLENTY of power for passing. Rubicon gives you a 4.10 Ratio too, but its optional so make sure you have the 4.10.
Auto Trans is good, smooth shifts, and good gas mileage. I get about 18 mpg highway, but i live near NYC lots of traffic, and i accelerate alot. So far no problems 700 Miles in.

B I T C H E N !

I have never had a Jeep before, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

I love the ride and the power that the 2012 has. I traded a Tundra for my 2 door, and I really like being able to park it in a parking lot. The Tundra was not impossible, but difficult. This one is a kick in the butt to drive.

I'm getting 24 on the highway and 18 combined.
I didn't trust the computer milage at first, but I penciled it out and it is dead on.

I also have the auto and the 3.73 rear end. I have always heard about how much of a dog these were getting up to speed. This is a great combination. When I stick my foot in it to merge on the fwy, it does it nicely. I also made sure that I had an LSD. Haven't even been off road yet, but I'm sure it is awesome.

Nothing wrong with 24 on the highway - that's what I like to hear!

I'm replacing a 2004 F150, and a bump from a max of 18 helps justify the change.

Only thing is, the F150 has been bulletproof over 8 years (and paid for 5 years ago), just change oil and feed it gas.

I had a 02 TJ then went into a GMC 1500 that eventually was lifted 7" an on 35's. I now have just over 4 k on my '12 Arctic edition. I love it. It is everything that my TJ was and better. I really like the freedom tops versus the soft top because I live on a lime rock road and the dust absolutely killed my soft top and zippers. I have the 3.21 gears and I do not know what everyone complains about. I take off at lights and routinely leave people in the dust and it is nice being able to pass at 80 on the highway because my TJ with the 4.0 couldn't hardly do that. Maybe a problem with large tires but since I have a 2 door no plans going over 33's. I don't regret anything about my new Jeep. BTW averaging 20.2 mpg mixed driving.

How many RPMs do you crank at 70mph with this setup?

2012 is a serious improvement over the <2011 JKs.

Can't comment on the 99TJ but my 93 Sahara had good pickup compared to my current 2007 JKU. I'd call the 07 JKU's enging a dog but I like dogs. Suppose sloth is a better metaphor.

I just orderd a 2012 Rubicon and looking forward to being able to pass on the highway when needed or beat my grandmother (in her walker) to the end of the driveway.

I bought a JKU sahara for my wife and a JK Rubicon for myself. Both Auto and my Rubi with 4:10. If your concerned about gas mileage I would go into it expecting 14-16mpg combined city/highway. Thats a realistic expectation and anything over that would a plus. With that said we each love our Jeeps and having driven both they are substantially different in terms of handling and acceleration. My Rubicon feels like a zippy go cart. It's got a great aggressive ride that handles really well. My wife's Sahara is much more subdued and comfortable. I suggest you actually test drive the exact model your interested in getting since the difference is noticeable.

Totally agree! I have the same setup and it is a pleasure to drive! Jump on the trottle and hit the passing gear and it will surprise you. No regrets!

That is fantastic! With the same set up except for 33"s I get 21mpg on the road max with cruise control and an average of about 17mpg average.

No problems to report at 6,100 miles.

18/24 MPG?

Really?

My 2012 JK Sahara w/six speed manual transmission, 3.73 rear and 2,800 miles has been getting 16 and change MPG consistantly. I know the cold weather brings it down a bit. I'm guessing 17 MPG in warmer weather broken in.

For some reason Google has NOT been reading my mind lately like I was accustomed to, so I couldn't find the final gear for the auto. 0.67, off the top of my head, but those calculations need a little more precision than a WAG. So I just asked you and skipped the calculator altogether!

I called home right before my evening meeting, and all I said was...."Dear....this Jeep is pure joy to drive." We have one 2011 JK Anniversary Edition in Bright Silver(The Bullet), and a 2012 JKU Arctic Edition in Winter Chill. It was about 39 degrees out, and yet I HAD to have the windows open while driving today after work. Pure joy.....I can NOT wait for the first semi warm Spring day.

I don't know how everyone is getting these awesome numbers. I use an iphone app to track my mileage and my average is 15 mpg. I am very conscious of my driving habits and try to do everything to maximize my mileage I can.

I have 2300 miles on my 2012 JKUR w/ 6 speed and I would have to be going downhill all the time to get 24 mpg. My numbers jive with yours though.

Yeah I have a '12 2 door rubi manual, I have a 5 mile drive to work in the city, hills and traffic lights the whole way. I get like 14 in the city. I can get upwards of 20 on the highway at 60 if it's flat and there isn't a headwind. But I have E-rated all-terrains on for the winter, winter gas, carrying a bunch of gear I never take out, etc.

Snappy little bugger though. Yee haw!!!
