2012 Fender stress crack causing paint to crack?

I have a 2012 Sahara Unlimited Sahara that is showing stress marks/paint cracks starting on both front fenders. the jeep is only two months old and hasn't been off road. The passenger side is worse where the paint crack is a thin line of black developing from under the hood straps and runs down along the fender 90 degree bend (follows the line of the fender if that makes sense). The drivers fender it's just starting under the hood strap so I'll see if that gets worse.

Has anyone experience this with fenders as it seems like a stress crack or something with how the fender was put on incorrectly (to tight somewhere)? I'm wondering if the dealer would repair this under warranty? Thanks all.

yeah sounds like a great thing to warranty, I don't have a sahara but any type of cracks like that is a defect

Mine was like that in the showroom. Bought it anyway with promise from dealer to fix it. Only bad part is that I splurged and bought quantum to apply inside and outside of the whole jeep, but now have to wait 60 days after it's fixed to do it. Taking her in on Monday.

I have it to from the factory, it looks to me to be the seam of the fender showing through. Put some mud on it and you wont be able to tell.

That is to bad. I would be concerned with how the fenders hold up long term. If so many of you are already having problems, I would think this is going to continue.

Just checked my JKU and I have one on the drivers side. I bought it from pat at fields so I am sure he will take care of it. What a bummer. If it wasn't for this forum I would have never checked. Thanks guys!

My thoughts also and how many times are they going to repair these things until the buyer, seller or both become tired of it.
Personally, I didn't like the idea of the matching paint and for the hard top either. Since we ended up with black, it all kind of matches anyway, including the bumpers.
Still a bummer for the OP and the others who do like this style.

I wondering how many folks didn't notice. There is going to be a bunch of warranty claims for cracked flares.

Seem inevitable, especially if you off road the jeep.

My dealer said this was a plastic film to protect the paint

No, it's a crack in the paint right on the "seam." I have a little of it on the passenger side flare.

I'm just going to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get too bad... it's not like the plastic underneath is going to rust!

I find that I don't really care much about the little cosmetic things like this, or like a little water on the center console after a heavy rain. It's just not worth letting some ham-handed apprentice at the dealer make it even worse....

About body color painted fenders.. I was at the dealership yesterday exploring what options I want on a new Wrangler. The salesperson recommended against getting the Sahara because the fenders can get all chipped up from offroading. Does anyone have any expierence with this? I am interested of the Sahara b/c I want some of the options that are not avail on the sport.

At least the painted fenders don't chalk and look like crap in a couple years, like on my '07.

I use a Turtle Wax product called F 21. It works great on black plastic and rubber to maintain a nice deep shine. I have also used 303 in the past and that works great as well Sean.

Sorry for the Hijack.

I was offered, and took an option to have my Sahara receive some coating on the paint, windshield, and interior. Sort of like simonizing the whole car. Not sure what the name of the product is. Anyway, if I get a chip in the paint, or the windshield, or most stains in the interior, I can take it to a service center and they will fix it. I did this as I was warned that the fenders get beat up while offroading.

I'll find out today about the state of my fenders as I spent yesterday running them through sand and water holes

Keep us posted on how well this holds up, but I would think that this problem is from within from flexing of the material it's made from.

I thought that one could get most everything they wanted, as long as they took the "Quick Order Package as well.

X2, it's been that way since at least 2010 models. If the seam has cracked paint then it's time to go to the dealer and have it fixed.

Thanks Pat I agree EXCEPT for the two or three days I have to rent a vehicle to be able to work. I don't believe any dealer can replace or repair a fender then paint it in an afternoon.

Having mine fixed this week. My dealer gave me a loaner. Yours should too.

It can be done in one day if it's airbrushed. Otherwise if they are going to repair it, it needs to go to a body shop. I've seen the lines on the fenders, but have yet to see one where the paint was cracking.

The driver side one is worse than the passenger side. It was like this in the showroom.
