My owner's manual states the following:

limits of local traffic laws, contributes to a good break-in.
Wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental

and should be avoided.
This is the part I do:
While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration within the
limits of local traffic laws, contributes to a good break-in.

I'm talking brief full throttle acceleration from say 50mph to 65mph in either 5th or 6th gear. I'm extremely gentle in low gear, no flooring it in low gears

2012 2-door sport 3.73 auto:

20-21 HWY (65 mph) max 22 mpg
18-19 BKR
16-17 CTY

1200 total miles so far.

My overall average MPG started at 17 and is now 18.

I did the same with mine. You'll have to realize that some Jeep owners are scared to rev their V6 engines past 3K RPMs.

The Pentastar is used in a lot of vehicles some even considered "sporty". I bet the guy in the Challenger with the same motor (different programming) doesn't lug it everywhere.

Advice on 3.21 vs.7.73 rearend

Just joined. From central Ga. where it is flat. Plan on ordering 2012 unlimited sahara this coming week with auto trans. Can't decide on 3.21 or 3.73. What will be difference in gas mileage between two?

2012 4 door AT 4.10 Rubi
16.5 mpg average with 3500 on the ODO.

This is with what I imagine will be my typical driving - I don't like to wait to get up to speed, and let the engine do its thing. I don't floor it or force downshifts often. I do enjoy the power.

I would imagine that a non-Rubi (better street tires) with different gearing would do better. This is still about 2mpg better than my 04 Rubi 5 speed on 33" BFG MTs, but that thing was a pig with a couple hundred pounds of bumper and skid added on, too.

ZIP, something doesn't sound right with those numbers. Have you taken it on the highway for a while to see if you can get the numbers to improve?

If you have the electronic vehicle information center on the dash reset the mpg calculator on the dash and then try to see how good you can get the mpg. Try to get the optimal driving conditions for 3 miles or so. If you reset the calculator while already on the highway doing around 55-60 mph in a flat area and you are not getting 18+ mpg then something is wrong.

I have a 2011 sport. Manual. I work in Atlanta and live in Hilton head SC. I drive back every weekend. 288 miles and full my tank before I leave and coast in on fumes. 75mph average around 17mpg. I also have larger wheels and tires making my speedometer inaccurate. No difference on mpg, being pulled over is another story. 1 ticket and a warning!

I very rarely get on the highway. My 2nd or 3rd tank, I drove highway for a total of about 40 miles, the rest city. I believe my MPG was 15.6 for that tank. I calculate manually everytime i fill up, and my info center is dead on. I think its the city thats killing me. And I mean CITY.....stop & go, stop & go. I will try your highway idea next time I have a chance, but I think its just what its gonne be. Good thing is, even at this rate, a tank lasts me 10-12 days.

I did a good bit of stop-and-go driving today just after filling up and resetting the EVIC. I missed about every light in town, and, by the time I finished all my chores, the EVIC read 14.0 MPG. So I wouldn't be surprised at your mileage in congested city driving. Take 'er out on the highway, as others have suggested.... You'll get much better mileage.

6 speed 3.73 unlimited.
Usually 70% highway average 19.5 by fillup 20 on display.
Best tank was 20.2 on shell gas, 80% highway but bad side wind for a stretch..
Still very impressed even with Sams club gas. Even around the city Ive never seen less than 17 on the display

After break in expect 1-2 mpg better. 100% city driving can be cruel.

16.5 on my latest tank. Pretty much all of my mine have been in the low 16's. I drive 75% city, 25% highway. MPG doesn't matter much though when you've got a sunny beach day and this sweet ride...

2012 AT, Stock Unlimited Rubicon with 4.10's (635 miles)

I have been reading these posts and was curious how my new Rubicon would fair on my way home today if I drove conservatively. I reset my fuel calculator and set the cruise control on 60 mph (approximately 2000 rpm and VERY conservative) while driving on the interstate, which is rolling grades here in Atlanta. It was pretty difficult to stick to the 60 mph speed (usually drive 65-70mph), but I managed...I just maintained the far right side as my intention was to optimize my fuel economy and not create a traffic jam. : )

35 miles later...I pulled into my garage with an average of 24.1 mpg! Keep in mind, I made a concerted effort to optimize my fuel economy and this has not been my typical average. Prior to this "experiment," I have averaged 19.3 mpg with city and highway mix; without exceeding the 3000 rpm mark. Usually, I set the cruise control on 65 mph while on the interstate and average 20.3 mpg...still MUCH better than I had expected , but I know I am holding back and not really "enjoying" the 285 hp while breaking her in. I can't wait to get on it after my first oil change and see what she has! (fuel economy out the window on that day)

I just felt like sharing my "experiment" with you all.

Very interesting....
24mpg is damn good....
20.3 at 65 MPH is really good as well.

There are two dyno charts floating around for the 3.6L engine. Depending on which one you look at, the engine appears to be most "efficient (RPM's vs torque/HP) at either 1800 or 2000 RPM's. Maybe that is the best place to cruise? Of course, not trying to push a brick at 70mph probably also helps.

Post Correction...

Hmmmmm...I THOUGHT I was running 4.10's...a little upset, but I confirmed my VIN with Jeep Customer Service and I'm running 3.73's. That may be why I was able to hit the 24.1 mpg mark today during my experiment. Oh well...I still love my Rubi. I didn't plan on exceeding 295's in the future anyways, so I guess it works out. The auto transmission is SMOOTH.

Okay, that's all. I just wanted to correct my mistake and give you all a more accurate baseline.

Cool...
And that makes even more since...as that would put 60 mph at 1947 RPM's. (4.10's would have had you at 2140 rpm's)

How was it on hills?

It's great...I really am impressed with the ride quality and the power. It is very similar to my "old" 2008 FJ Trail Teams Edition. I had a 3" Old Man Emu lift and 285 75 16's on it and look at doing something similar to my Jeep. The Rubicon STILL gets better mileage than my FJ ever did. The FJ did seem more responsive, but like I stated in my initial post, I haven't exceeded 3000 rpm's yet, so I'm curious to see what it is like in a higher range.

Patience sucks! In the mean time...I'm just enjoying the ride and throwin' a wave every chance I get.

I'm getting much better gas mileage when the temps are above 60F. I use a scangauge 2 and it's easily showing a 15% increase in fuel mileage in warmer temperatures which is to be expected. So far with 2000 miles I am averaging right around 20mpg on my daily DC area commute with about half stop and go and half steady 50+mph on highways and parkways. It's a lot better than I had ever hoped for.
