2012 gear change/upgrade

Got some new info for those who might have 3:21 gears on a 2012 Wrangler. OK......according to my local 4 Wheel shop and local Jeep dealers the front carrier must be upgraded when trying to upgrade from 3:21 gears to any other gear size due to the size of the carrier.

So my plan to upgrade my gears from 3:21 to 3:73 or 4:10 went from a potenital 1200 job to the purchase of a new carrier as well as the cost of the gear upgrade. So that little plan just got put on hold for some time down the road.

Now according to the Jeep rep, who was on site at the 4 Wheel shop, the 3:21 gears will work just fine with 33" tires. The new V6 has plenty of HP to push that tire and wheel combo with no issues. Now an upgrade to 35" and then your looking at some very noticeable power and MPG loss.

Just thought I would share info that was presented to me for anyone who might have been thinking about a gear upgrade from 3:21 gears on the 2012's.

If I ever re-gear from 3.21, I'll put in these puppies. No need for a new carrier

2013 manual tranny with 3.21's, 4" lift and 35's (34.5's) currently...

4.88's, front driveshaft, sleeves, gussets, ball joints, and Truetrac's front and rear soon to be installed shortly...

I have researched this till my eyes crossed...

3.21 Threads:
http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/3-2...st-209000.html
Currently have 3.21s and 305/70/17s/3" lift. My husband is putting in 4.56s and rear locker in this weekend. The front carrier (3.21) does have to be replaced with any gear change. Spider gears too. As mentioned.
Costs to replace the gears depends wildly based on where you live but a good ballpark is $1500.

Which driveshaft did you go with? Crossing my fingers on mine for a little while.

35's 4.88s from 3.21, truetracs front and rear....awesome setup.

If I had my time back I would have gone to 4.55s.

Why would you have done 4.56 if you had to do over? Just curious because I have 4.88 being installed in the wife's next week.

Local driveline shop in Lafayette LA builds them, no name brand... Good results and recommended by other shops in the area...

My shaft is still in fine shape, guess it will be a spare if ever needed ...

Just put 33" tires (285/75-16's) on my 13 JKU with auto and 3.21's. I was worried but it was for naught as it has plenty of giddy up and the tranny does not hunt like everybody said it does. I was already to swap gears and had worked out a deal with a local place where I supply the parts and they charge 500 labor for both front and rear but after running around for 2 days no way will I change gears at this point. Living in Montana you are either going up or down so I was worried but it feels great. If I were rock crawling I might think differently but probably won't have much of a chance to rock crawl.

I would consider the 4.55's if I didnt tow much, plus most if not all of my driving is non-interstate ...

5th and 6th gear are not used currently with the 3.21's...

The Truetrac's will be the fa-schizzle for my neck of the woods , I had an e-locker in a TRD Taco and never used it because the LS's took me where I wanted to go...

A new front carrier is only about 70 bucks more. I wouldn't let that stop you, especially if you were about to drop 1200 already.
I was running 35's on 3:21's but regeared to 4:56. It was actually ok as a temp setup but I would say even with 33's it will leave you with something more to be desired. If you are worried about doing it just until you get the money up for the regear then you will def. be fine for a short while on 33's/3:21

I feel ya on the truetracs, I'm running them front and rear and man they are so grippy. I'm not near serious enough to fool with full lockers, not to mention I can apply a little brake for help. These things grip like crazy though. Worth every penny.

cool but it says 32" tire max, so kind defeats regearing for bigger tires.

I'm with you. I went stock 3.21 to lift and 35's with almost no noticeable change in performance. I do however live in Florida and don't wheel hard. I won't be changing gears for a long time if ever. Why fix what isn't broke.
