2012 has a RPM related whine. Alternator or Idler pulley?
Okay, so I have an whine after my last offroad trip where I took on some mud/water so I'm sure there is mud/water in a bearing somewhere. So far, this is the ONLY symptom and battery charge is fine and even drove about 300 miles.
Steps Taken So Far
I attempted to clean out any mud/debris from the alternator/pulleys with no luck. First I tried compressed air, then water.
I picked up a used alternator with 1k miles on it that I will probably keep as a spare if I don't need to swap out.
Got a quote from the dealership of $115 just to diagnose IF the issue isn't covered under warranty.
1. Other than swapping out the pully, is there a way to diagnose if the problem is just an idler pulley or if it is in fact the alternator?
2. If i remove the tension from the belt, will I be able to spin the three pulleys freely to determine if one (or all) is problematic? Looks like all three pulleys can be had for $60ish so it might not be a bad idea for me to pick them up as spares.
3. How difficult is it to swap out the alternator on a 2012 for a guy who has never done anything but suspensions and snorkel installs?
Thanks all for the help.
