2012 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited

HELP!!! I want to change out the wheels and tires on my new jeep, but the dealer is telling me I can't change from the 18" rims that it comes with to 16" rims and tires would go from 255/70-18 to 265/75-16. Would this be all right?

Maybe that's all he's willing to do. The Sport S package comes with 17" wheels and 255 70 17 GY SRA. The Rubicon comes with 17" wheels and 255 70 17 BFG TM.

Not sure I understand . . . .

It is (obviously) true that a tire that fits an 18" wheel will not fit a 16" wheel. 18" wheels come on the Sahara, 16" wheels come on the (base) Sport.

So are you saying that you've asked your dealer to swap your Sahara wheels/tires for base Sport wheels/tires? If so, then the swap will work and your dealer should agree to give you a discount, since the 16" wheels/tires are not as nice.

If you're not getting a discount, I wouldn't bother. You'd be far better off bringing home your Sahara wheels/tires, getting aftermarket ones in whatever size you desire, and then selling your original Sahara wheels/tires on Craigslist or eBay to make back a few hundred dollars.

I am not getting a discount at the dealer, I think they want me to buy wheels and tires from them and over charge me, but I am buying my own tires and wheels and having them shipped to the dealer for them to install them on my jeep

Ahh, well then the only things you need to be concerned about are that (a) you have the proper bolt pattern of 5x5 or 5-127, (b) that the overall tire height doesn't go much higher than 33" unless you have a lift, and (c) that the backspacing on your new wheels is 4.5" or less.

If the dealer isn't giving you a discount, make sure you take the original Sahara wheels/tires to sell on Craigslist/eBay afterward. If the dealer keeps them, he should credit you quite a bit toward the cost of the Jeep.

If you can't get all this sorted out in a way that isn't confusing, I'd just handle it aftermarket. Take the Jeep as-is for whatever price you've arrived at, and then go through Discount Tire or another wheel/tire company to get your wheels/tires taken care of.

Mike,

Thank you for the info on the wheels and tires, I am looking to go with Cragar soft 8's 16 inch and 265/75/16 Goodyear Silent Armors would that do without lifting the jeep.

Thanks
Maryann

Presuming you've got the right bolt pattern, those should fit fine. I'd go with a slightly larger tire size personally, as those will actually be a bit shorter than the stock tires that are already on the Sahara and only a touch wider, but that's just my preference.
