2012 jeep wrangler ticking noise from engine

So I just bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with 2200 miles on it. The dealership told me the owner had it for a little while, however, it has 3900 miles on it now and I have been hearing this ticking noise coming from my engine. When I bought it I had the dealership do an oil change at 2800 miles. Is this normal for a Jeep?

You've got the dreaded tick and depending on how you look at it it's a known problem. The head needs replacing = covered under warranty.

Is it normal for your 2012 to make a ticking noise? Some ticking from the injectors is normal, but I would swing it by the dealer to look at it. Especially if it has thrown a check engine light. There have been some cases of bad valves on the drivers side head. Usually the fix is a new head, if they determine that is the case.

Does anything stop Chrysler from re-selling buy back Wranglers? I wonder what the carfax says about this one. Would this information even make a carfax report?

Go ahead and check the thread link or go over to youtube and search wrangler pentastar tick to see if you have the issue. Basically it makes the driver's side of the engine sound like a diesel while the passenger side sounds normal.

There are also some youtube videos showing what a normal pentastar engine should sound like.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you everyone for your concerns. I called the dealership up today and scheduled to bring it by on Friday. I have been looking on youtube and that is exactly what mine sounds like.

Here's mine for reference, which seems to be normal.

I went to the dealership this morning and they told me that the ticking sounds normal. They told me there was some problems with other jeeps with the no.2 cylinder, however, they told me not to do anything till it threw a code.

That has been the reported procedure from most others.

Personally I woudn't accept that as an answer. "Ticking" from a relatively new engine is certainly not normal. Sounds like a valve or in the old days lifter issue. If they want you to ignore it I would ask them to extend the warranty if its "NORMAL", they should'nt be too worried to do that for you. good luck!

Actually some ticking from this engine is normal. Why would you extend the warranty for "no problem found"?

I have a '12 JKU and had VERY minor ticking... so small I noticed it on occasion but not all the time. Ignoring it, I found myself stranded in Maine on my way home to Massachusetts when the head / valve went. The engine had barely 10,000 miles on it. It took 3 days to get it fixed as the heads were being replaced so often the dealer had to get another shipped from Boston.

Advice? DO NOT IGNORE it. It is NOT normal. The dealers know of the issue and want to put you off, hoping you limp along... INSIST on it being replaced and let them know if you get stranded, you'll be sending all bills their way if they don't.

On the plus side? It runs great now. ;-)
