Over the years all car companies messed up, and some used the same poorly designed engine for years, and a lot of people got stuck with them as a result. That's in the back of my mind in this case, I'm hoping it's not the case here. Thanks
I can't speak for how Chrysler operates their business, but would assume it is similar to the company I worked for. All major OEM's operate in a "JIT" Just in Time environment, meaning components, engines, and parts are delivered just as they are needed. Typically, there is not a large build ahead, especially not with engines, as they are a high cost assembly. I would think that by 2013, any of the issues spoken about in this thread should well be sorted out, as it sounds like from the forums I have been reading that the majority of the head ticking issues are in vehicles built in September 2011-November 2011.

Only time will tell, but I wouldn't let this scare you out of a 2013 model if that is what you want. In a mass produced vehicle, there will always be some issues, as it was made by humans, and goodness knows we aren't perfect. I'll be picking up my 2012 model next week, so hoping for a good engine and an enjoyable experience with my first Jeep!

These engines have been used since 2010 and there was a bad batch (the thought anyway) sometime during the 3rd quarter of 2011. What's to say another bad batch or something actually serious doesn't occur at anytime. It's the gamble you take purchasing anything built by humans as quickly as these are.

Let's face it, this is a noise and a CEL (sometimes), what actual failure has occurred? Has anyone been left stranded by this tick?

Well please don't go to ANY car forum that you might be interested in. You will be very disappointed in what is said about each vehicle. Just buy a horse and buggy and don't worry about it. Sounds like you may never be happy with any vehicle and i really don't want to hear you gripe on here about every little problem you have....

It does? Based on what, a handful of people posting on a forum where people primarily post about problems?

I've bought plenty of new vehicles, including a Jeep. I did my homework and was satisfied with the purchase.

Here's a thought if your not happy about me trying to gather info which might help me and others then add me to your ignore list.

JIT is interesting. I know Chrysler bet heavy on this engine and will probably resolve it in short order. These forums are a great way to find out. Thanks for the info!

I like the idea of people having this problem posting their build dates and milage. A thread just for that would be real helpful. Maybe it's there I just haven't seen it.

Well, my check engjne light went back off.....i think i reset i by mistake. I was at a store 1/2 mile from the dealer getting a few items before I took it in. It quit....just like that. i had hooked up a scan guage earlier in the day. i took it up to the dealer and asked if they still wanted it and he said that he would rather have it wth the light on. I figured its just a matter of time before it comes back on so i said sure. he said don't mess with it next time, just leave it on. So, back out on the highway until the next time. its not showing any symptms and is running great.

I stop and think that years ago, you would drive around in a blissful ignorance until your car broke, because we didn't have computers that would tell you what was wrong. we didn't have a "check engine light" you just had "idiot lights" or you would add guages. Heck, we didn't even have tachs on most of the cars we had to add them....and oil pressure and temp guages too if you wanted some idea of how you engine is running. Not sure its better now.....it just is.

I think they'll resolve it, too much is riding on it for them not to.

Absolutely the same experience. I had 2 codes thrown in a month and the second time I was told that it was just a software update. Posted that here. Well....over the weekend guess what....another check engine. Went into today and sure enough cylinder 6 misfire. New head ordered. Will post up the results once it comes in but the system shows the heads are back ordered. Guess there is a larger demand than we are hearing. Mine has almost 13,000 miles and this all started around 10,000 miles. Bought mine in October so was likely built in the same timeframe.

its been warm enough to ride my motorcycles so i havent run the jeep except a couple of miles since last entry. it costs @ $0.22 a mile for the jeep and $0.11 for my Harley and $0.10 for my Yamaha. Running over 100 miles a day round trip gives me some incentive to run my bikes.....but I'll catch up to the Rubi.....I've got a long way to go before the warranty is up.

Going on day 9 with no jeep due to misfiring in 2, 4, and 6!! On my 2012 Sahara (I've had it for 5months and put 11k on it) already having engine problems... It took 3 times at the Jeep dealership for them to figure it out. First couple of times it was computer updates (so I was told) but the malfunction indicator light would come back on within 48 hours every time... fingers crossed I have it back soon- this has been going on for over a month now

Oh it's coming I'm sure. I cleared mine with the PROCAL this morning as I am waiting on my head to come in. Funny thing is I don't feel anything. Performance is good. Anyhow sure enough the check engine light comes back on this afternoon while sitting at a traffic light. Go figure. I guess I'll leave it on so I don't have any problem when the head does finally come in.

Wow, that realy sucks! My light came back on. It had a 300 series code, indicating a misfire. The dealer said it needed to replace the head but had to order the part. I'm on the list. I'm lucky i guess. When it came back on and i took it in i said it would probably be the 300 series....and that i might need a new head. They called and said i was right. They'll let me know whenthe part is in. They told me it was ok to drive as long as the light didn't start flashing. So thats what I'm doing....spareingly.
I think I'd contact Jeep if I were you and see what they say. Go over the dealers head.

$50 says these things keep eating heads every 10k miles even after they are fixed. Any takers? I'd feel a lot better if Chrysler knew wtf was causing this or would tell us if they knew which is probably more likely. Huge issue imo and certainly not contained to a small percentage of vehicles either like some would have you believe.

interesting.....i hadn't even considered that it might be a reoccurring problem. that would suck. if it happened again after they fixed it, i wonder if we could envoke the lemon law.

I guess it's my turn....

I ran across this thread about a week ago and noticed I had the "ticking" issue but decided I would just wait until I got a check engine light before I would do anything about it. Since then I've noticed an occasional rough idle so I figured It wasn't going to be long. Well, turns out I was correct because I got the check engine light on Friday night. I took it to my dealer on Saturday morning (4/21) and confirmed I got a P0304 "misfire" which I believe is cylinder #4. They confirmed there was a TSB (18-07-12) for this issue which was to flash the PCM. The dealer was nice enough to take care of it right there although from what I learned about reading this board I dont expect this to be the long term fix. I give it about a week before I get another code.

My build date is Aug 2, 2011

.....and so it begins. start talking them now about the head replacement. i started early, letting them know i was aware of the problems. i had it flashed once, i cleared it once by mistake as i was taking it in for the second time (306 code) and this last time they ordered me a new head. hope it fixes it. still waiting for part. only been just a little less than a week. good luck with yours.

You bring up a good point. I cleared my code myself the second time by doing the "key trick". I would advise against it. It's one less occurrence you can count toward getting the dealer to move their arse or toward a lemon law claim.

Let the light stay on every time and get it documented.

i checked the lemon laws for maryland and you have to initiate before 18000 miles, i think. so, guess who is going to be getting a certified/registered letter saying that my jeep has had issues and that if it continues the head replacement could substantially detract from resale value and that i just wanted to get it on record in case of future events.....btw, i see you're from milford...nice area. my son used to live there, now he's up in rehoboth.

I hate to say it but I think Chrysler is going to be eating a lot of these problem 3.6L Wranglers under the lemon law. Still no word on the cause of the problem, and if it was fixed going forward. Other early Pentastar issues were quickly resolved and the info about the cause and fix of the problem was on the web, that's not the case here. I wish all you guys the best of luck with your issues.
