2012 JK Pentastar FUEL ECONOMY?

Hi all...Well, I'm still incredibly impressed with my new 2012 Wrangler Sahara...after 1 1/2 months driving in all sorts of weather conditions, and having 'surprised' a few 'other SUV' drivers (including a brand-new Range Rover Evoque!) with the ability to accelerate when that light goes green!

(and yes, I KNOW the 'Evoque' and others could have easily overtaken me...but it's the element of surprise and that first 100 feet that wins!! - what a kid, I am!)

ANYWAY...I've been experimenting with the 'fuel economy' read-outs...and, is it just me, but is the PentaStar pretty thirsty under normal driving conditions?

I CAN achieve the 'posted fuel economy' numbers for the JK, IF I drive with 'an egg on the accelerator', though...

But, I'm just asking for opinions from owners of 2012's...about their fuel economy...Is it better or worse than expected?

We all believe that the PentaStar is better than the old 'boat anchor' 3.8 van engine, but is it THAT much better?

I suppose, given my initial comments about 'surprising' other SUV owners, you might get the opinion that I like to drive in a spirited fashion ...so, maybe it's more about that?

cheers!

SaharaGuy

I will say that I am getting lower than expected fuel economy. I knew going into it that it would be bad, but I thought it would be a little better. I drive rather normal, not too light, but not too hard on the accelerator. Doesn't bother me too much, I knew it was a box on wheels when I bought it.

Unfortunately I don't believe that the fuel economy is that much better than my "boat anchor engine"

However... I do believe that the power is greatly increased and the acceleration is impressive. Since its a jeep I think the appeal of the 2012's is the more power, not the minimal increase in fuel economy

Chrysler only claimed 10 to 12% better fuel economy. Wrangler EPA estimates went from 15/19 MPG rating for the 3.8L, to 17/21 MPG for the 3.6L. Not exactly earth shaking increases in fuel economy.

Now, horsepower per gallon..... that might be another story....

Stock sport/Sahara w/ 6 speed and 3.21 gears. Oh ... Don't forget those massive 30" tires... You want listed Mpg's?

Let me just say that I change the subject to Sway bar disconnects and limited slip differentials whenever my friends driving grocery-getters ask about my 2012 Rubi's mpg

I am getting about 17/18 MPG. Coming from my other vehicle that gets about 12-14 it seems extremely good.

I went from a 1989 GMC Jimmy with a 4.6L V6 to a 1997 Chevy Silverado with a 5.8L V8 to a 2006 Pontiac G6 GT with a 3.6L v6 to my beautiful and new 2012 wrangler sahara arctic with the 3.6L V6.

I have seen MPG go down up and back down again.

I am surprised to see that the wrangler, which has ben known for not being easy on gas, gets almost the same MPG as the G6 did. I cannot say if that is good for the wrangler or bad for the G6, but I will say it is better than I expected.

If you can hit expected mileage on a mopar, it would blow my mind. Bought a 2011 avenger because it said 30 mpgs, havent seen over 24 yet

^^^ This is the key point right here. The MPG may be slightly better or even just "the same" but when you couple that with the 40% increase in HP and the ??% increase in torque, that's a pretty nice achievement if you ask me.

I went from an 05 ZR2 Blazer, 4.3 with 3.73 gears to a 2012 JK with 3.21 gears. The Jeep has alot more pick-up than the Blazer. Blazer had terrible MPG. At 70 with the Jeep I can get 19-20, at 60 I can get 21+, I have no problem with the 3.21 gears, it has done everything I've expected from it, including pulling a 5 x 8 foot utiliy trailer. MPG was figured with math and the EVIC. That's with no head wind

I didn't buy a Jeep for the MPG... otherwise I would have stuck with the Civic.

I had an 09 JKU and over 20,000 miles got an average of 15.4 MPG city/hwy (stock tires and wheels).

If I get 17 with this one I'll be happy.

I agree, MPG was not my biggest concern either, I'm getting 17.2 and that's good enough for me. I'll give up a little gas mileage for the fun of owning a Jeep.

The stop and go traffic kills my mpg but when I get out of town and start to cruise, the mpg really jumps up. Running in hi gear at 2000-2500 rpm is "rpg nirvana".

I had a 02 TJ manual with the 4.0 and 30" tires with no lift and averaged 17MPG. Went to '08 GMC Sierra with 5.3L that stock got 17 MPG mixed driving but went to 14.5 after 7"lift and 35's. My 12 Arctic 2 door with 3.21 gears and 255/75/17 is betting 20.4 driving same raids as other vehicles. It is auto and is perky compared to TJ or truck but the truck had more grunt. I think the new motor and 5 speed are really nice, could it be a V8 or diesel, sure but this current set-up is pretty darned good. BTW ecstatic with 20 MpG, figured if I would get 17-18 would be fine.

I'm getting about 17.5 daily driver mixed. I can get 20 if I play the ECO game on the dashboard, but I keep wanting to see how fast it will go up that hill, and that ruins the game....

I haven't had mine on the highway yet but I'd imagine that extra gear with the auto trans should make some difference over the older ones.

My Dodge Ram diesel got better mileage. It averaged about 20 overall - almost 23 freeway, my Rubicon around 17 overall. Ram had much more power, Jeep easier to drive in confined spaces.

the ECO thing...on a 2012 JK...no 'evic'...and 'MPG'???

OK...I give up...

On the speedo dial, it says, under the other indicators and the speedometer: 'ECO mode' (or something like that) in green luminescent letters...But, sometimes it's NOT there...and it doesn't seem to depend on how 'eco' I'm driving!!

Does anybody understand this? I've checked the manual, and it's not really clear...

Oh, and this: When I click my left steering-wheel button through to 'MPG'...and since I have a CANADIAN spec. JK...is this MPG in Canadian (Imperial) gallons (which are larger than the US gallon)?

I generally use the 'litre's per 100km' thing now...finally understand that the LOWER the number, the better the...ummmm...'kilometrage' is!!!

(kilometrage?)...

Not sure about the ECO thing but when you change from metric to US units you are seeing US MPG.

The "ECO" Indicator will turn on up when you are driving in a way that increases fuel economy. I think of it as an indicator of a balance of power and economy modes. I like to see how long I cab keep the indicator turned on. It works in all gears. It doesn't take much throttle to cause the indicator to turn off... More amusing than useful IMHO. May be very useful if gas hits $5.00/gal..
