2012 jku factory tow package question

Hi all. I am in the process of searching for a slightly used 2012 jku, and an absolute requirement is a tow package with the 3.73 gearing. None of the used dealererships seem to know this right off hand. My question is, do the 2012 wranglers WITHOUT any of the factory tow packages even have a hitch receiver installed? I've seen pictures of 2012 jeeps without a hitch receiver, so would it be reasonably safe to assume that if it actually has a receiver that it has a factory tow package installed, and thus 3.73 gearing? Aftermarket hitch receiver would of course be something to look out out for, but I could at least quickly identify those I know for sure don't have it.

Thanks

I think you want to specify the 3.73 gearing only. The hitch and wiring harness is snap to add yourself (10-15 minutes).

And "NO" a hitch doesn't mean a factory tow package, you can buy the hitch for $70 and install it with four bolts.

Look for the 3.73 or 4.11 gearing the hitch should be of no concern.

Assuming we are talking about 4 door's.

You can get the regular "trailer tow package" with 3.21's.....so don't just look for a tow hitch on the Jeep.
You can get 3.73's without a tow package (that is what I ordered).
Or you can get "Max Tow" which will include 3.73's.

Adding the Mopar hitch and harness takes 20 minutes.

You need to look for 3.73's or MAX TOW.

Good luck...

To my knowledge, from what my saleman told me, when ordering my JK he said you must get the tow package to get the receiver hitch. Thats not saying someone couldn't pay the dealer to add a factory mopar one on a vehicle on the lot they want without a factory tow package. So if your looking for a used one at a dealership they should have the options for the Jeep they are selling. If they don't have it on hand they can request a build sheet using the vehicle vin number from Chrysler customer service. That will inform them of the factory gearing and if the vehicle came factory equiped with the towing package.

Do not assume a factory hitch automatically means 3.73 gearing. There are two packages offered, only one of them (max tow) gives you upgraded gearing. The other is nothing more than a receiver and wiring harness. You may only have 3.21 gearing with this package unless the vehicle was ordered new with higher gearing.
For the record:
3.21 limits you to 2000# for all JK and JKU'S
3.73 or higher gives you 3500# with a JKU
max for JK IS 2000# regardless of gearing

Ignore any reference to 1000# ratings in manual. That is an error in the documentation. Corrected ratings are on the website.

So you are on the right track in specifying 3.73 gearing as your minimum

You can always contact Jeep and ask for a build sheet of a Jeep you are looking at. I did this for several when I was considering getting a used '12.

You'll need the VIN. I noted in the request that it was for sale and where it was. Not sure it that mattered.

It was my understanding that when I ordered the max tow it would have programing for "trailer sway control" in the computer.

When I ordered my 2013 JK Sahara I ordered the Tow Package and 3:73 gearing as two options. So had I just gotten the Tow Package I would have gotten the stock 3:23 gearing. I did not see a "Max Tow Pkg" so perhaps that is something for the JKUR; I don't know.

That was a big communication snafu starting with the 2012's.

They all have Trailer Sway control now...regardless of you ordering a tow package.

2 door are only offered "Trailer Tow".
4 doors (except Rubi's) are offered "Trailer Tow" and "Max Tow"
4 door Rubi's are only offered "Max Tow"...and it is a total rip-off for them.

That is something else that started in 2012....
