2012 JKU gear rattle

What do you guys think this is? In neutral, while tapping the gas, I get a distinct rattle coming from inside the tranny. If I push the gear shift all the way over to either side, it gets louder. The first one is from inside the cab and the second is me underneath while someone else taps the gas. It is under the passenger side by the cross member. Sorry for the foggy lens, Isaac has made it a sauna here.

mine does it too. When i brought it in to demonstrate to the dealer, it magically behaved itself. A number of people have it and the dealer has said its neutral rollover/normal. Get it checked out anyway. Mine also rattles in gear below 2k so im going to bring it in again

Yes, well I can get it to happen on command. If it is quiet, turn on the A/C. Starts making the noise after that every time. You can actually feel the gears hitting against each other through the gear shift. I don't know why the A/C is related, but when I turn mine on, I hear the compressor turn on with a loud "thud" and then get the gear noise.

I'll see if mine does the same with the A/C tonight

I listened to the videos; the noise coming from underneath is not normal.

This has been deemed neutral rollover by Chrysler. Unbelievable.

i tried the A/C thing and moving the lever from side to side, but it didn't trigger it. it usually happens after i've driven a bit. mine sounds exactly like yours. snagged this from another forum:

http://www.tccoa.com/articles/mn12ho...Diag-noise.pdf

Quote:
Neutral Rollover Rattle has the same characteristics as gear rattle except that rollover occurs with the engine
idling, transmission in NEUTRAL, and the clutch engaged (clutch pedal released). The rollover noise intensity
increases with transmission operating temperature and engine torque load resulting from air conditioning and
generator. Neutral rollover noise is not detrimental to the engine or transmission. In vehicles where the engine
idle speed is below specification or rough, a harsh clattering noise like loose marbles in the transmission may
be heard.

Rollover Noise caused by engine torsional vibrations and Clutch Release Bearing Noise are sometimes
mistaken for Transmission Bearing Noise. Neutral rollover noise will disappear when the transmission is
engaged in gear. Due to a constant running clutch release bearing (used for the hydraulic clutch release
mechanism), noise caused by a worn or damaged clutch release bearing will be noticeable with the clutch
engaged or disengaged (clutch pedal released or depressed). Transmission service will not eliminate gear
rollover noise or clutch release bearing noise.

[...]

Gear rollover noise, inherent in manual transmissions, is caused by the constant mesh gears turning at engine
idle speed, while the clutch is engaged and the transmission is in NEUTRAL; and release bearing rub are
sometimes mistaken for mainshaft bearing noise.

I still don't think mine is rollover. It's obvious gears hitting against each other. I see rollover as what you hear in big rigs while they sit idle and the engine goes "ruuur, ruuur, ruuur". That's a rattle caused by engine pulses. I'm actually revving the motor and the gears are spinning freely, but still touching.

It probably won't matter much longer because I get a different rattle in fourth gear (I have another post somewhere on the forum about it) and they are going to replace the tranny. That should fix this issue as well.

I just wish Chrysler would stop using the misdiagnosis as a cop out.

Good news! What's their excuse gonna be when the new tranny doesn't have the noise? LOL

My 3rd gear sounds like an 18-wheeler... weird.
But not an issue with me yet.

Update: Chrysler has come back and asked the shop Foreman to drive other Jeeps on the lot to see if they make the same noise as mine. This is due to the fact that other dealers have replaced counter shafts and the noise is still there. This is so ridiculous. I should tell the financing bank that they can pry my next payment from my dead hands.

I paid $30friggin thousand dollars for this gd Jeep and it came with a warranty that they don't think they have to honor.

Will keep you posted.

Update: the shop Foreman took another Wrangler out and didn't hear the noise. He called Chrysler and can't get anywhere with the Chrysler tech, so he is just going to replace the counter shaft and "related parts". Hopefully, this will work!

Spoke with the warranty administrator at my dealer last evening and he said that they opened up the transmission and saw the following were damaged:

reverse synchro
6th gear
shifter rail

He also said that there was no obvious damage to the counter shaft assembly. The next step was to complete a Chrysler "worksheet" to see if it would cost more to replace the damaged parts or to just replace the entire transmission (I guess with labor, it is sometimes cheaper to do the whole thing).

This morning, he said that the "worksheet" showed replacing the damaged parts would be cheaper. So, all parts would be there tomorrow, but the counter shaft would not be there until next Tuesday (I thought he said it wasn't damaged?). So, I will get the Jeep back next Wednesday or Thursday.

They also couldn't clarify if these damaged parts were causing my rattling sound, so we will see what happens. I wish they would just replace the entire thing, but whatever.

Hopefully next week, I will be back in business!!!

Good news! The counter shaft came in today! Bad news...sixth gear is on national backorder and won't be in until Oct 8th. So, if I have had such a pain in the ass time getting Chrysler convinced that I had a transmission problem, then why the f$&#k is a transmission part on national f$&$#king backorder?

Chrysler didn't have extras imported because they didn't think they would need them? LOL

Just a bit of humor to try and brighten your day.

Haven't been able to sleep the past couple of nights in anticipation of getting my Jeep back and installing my lift/exhaust!

I was supposed to have it today, but just got an email from the service dept stating that they had to order some special tool that is used to put the transmission back together. It won't be in until tomorrow and I can pick it up late in the day or on Saturday, depending on when they finish.

Why would they not have this tool? I know you shouldn't expect to take a tranny apart on a brand new vehicle, but whatev......

Finally!!!!!!! Got the Heap back on Saturday!!!!

Emailed on Friday morn and the warranty admin told me that he got his days mixed up and that his transmission "guy" was in class and wouldn't be in. He said he would leave the guy alone all day Saturday so he could get it done, provided there was no other transmission work that came in (which doesn't make sense cause mine had been there for two weeks). Anyway, emailed at noon on Saturday and was told it was going to be close....still being put back together. Fifteen minutes later, he emailed me and said that the shop foreman just got back from driving it and all was good. Timing seemed weird to me, but at that point, I didn't care. When I went to pick it up, the foreman wouldn't even look at me, which was weird cause he rode with me and had a good conversation about how this needed to be made right and there is definitely something wrong with the tranny. The warranty admin was straight-faced, didn't shake my hand, or anything. I know I was pushy the last few days, but I had been dealing with this issue for over two months. Maybe they were embarrassed for all of the delays or something.

No problems yet so far (fingers crossed). If anyone is in the Indy area, I would highly recommend Eastgate Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep!!! I will definitely be writing a letter to the first dealer who did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING over a three week span, except make me remove aftermarket items and continually return to drive them around listening for my problem.

Here is the invoice detail:

awesome. that's the second case with the reverse gear being damaged. maybe that contributes to the rattle because it synchronized? i've never had a manual with a synchronized reverse gear before.

i'm booking mine in the next couple weeks. since i put the hard top on the noise is awful in 3rd and 4th and now does it in 6th just cruising along.

So, i just dropped mine off for the rattle. It was rattling all the way to the dealer in 4th and 6th between 1500-2k rpm. rattling at stoplights in neutral.

go for a spin with the tech. barely any noticeable rattle. you know how it goes.

hopefully he has some success on his test drive
