2012 jku head unit replacement.

Forgive me as I'm a radio noob. I'm looking to replace my head unit and don't wanna break the bank but would love two main things. One that it would still allow use on my steering wheel controls and two is there one that will allow for better amperage or whatnt for better sound quality?

You can do aftermarket but you need to buy a wire harness and possibly a mounting kit. This will retain your steering wheel controls but will cost you another 100-200 on top of the stereo cost.

If you want stock it's mostly plug n play. You can get the 430rbz (non-nav) for about $400 on Ebay and if you know where to look a 430n for $500 on Ebay.

Aftermarket is going to be far superior sound wise. I personally have a 430n scheduled to be here Monday.

Just swapped out my 130 for 430n. Took me all of 15 minutes.

You can purchase a wire harness that will allow you to keep stock speakers and amp. Check out the thread I linked in my first post above. There's another big thread about it as well.

Do yourself a big favor and contact the folks at Crutchfield. Their prices are right at retail but well worth it for the superior customer and technical support. I have been buying from them for years and outfitted my 2013 2 dr JK with a complete system from them.

Well, he asked for better sound quality. Don't go for the stock units if you're after good sound.

The module to retain steering wheel controls is only about $40.

I guy stopped at my fire house to ask about my set up on my jku. He told me he works for a local shop doing high end audio. He said the infinity speakers are a very good speaker but were my system comes up short is in the head unit. He said the 7 speaker set up with the 10" sub would sound better but the factory 430 unit only puts out 2 ohms and what is really needed is twice that for the infinity system. Does this sound right or this guy just out trying to get business?

I am always a little wary when people come to my fire station unasked but I am a known paranoid. The stereo guy in your case was correct about the head unit being the weak link. As far as ohms are concerned it is not a measurement of power output but used in a formula called Ohms law.
The bottom line is if you want to save time and headaches replace the entire system; head unit, amp, speakers and wires. A goos single DIN head unit can be had for under $200, good speakers around $400 for all and $200 for a good amp. 16 gauge speaker wire is 50 cents a foot X 60 feet for my 2 door.

This is 100% true. Just comes down to what you want.

I seem to be one of the few that doesn't mind the stock Infinity speakers. Which is weird cause my sticker says Alpine but the sub in the back says Infinity? Either way it's loud enough with the top off and that's all I care about.

Another vote for crutchfield. I'm for saving money as much as the next guy, but this is what I got for my JKU. Pioneer App radio 2 $400 (plus $120 mail in rebate). Chrysler plug and play harness $75 (50% off since I purchased with head unit), antenna adapters and mounting kit (both free). They also sent me the Android cable kit for Appradio 2 ($100 value) for free. Sold it on eBay for $50.

Some other things they include are your jku's master install sheets which give step by step install help. Harness allows you to retain steering control and factory infinity system. Have no idea on better sound, but worth a try.

I personally don't have infinity so I'm a lost cause till I get all aftermarket.
