2012 JKU Satelite Radio

Mine sounds horrible! Is this true for all vehicles or just the wrangler?

It sounds like about half the quality of CD. 64 bit rate or something.

What channel are you listening to? Some music and talk channels just inherently suck.

I usually listen to pop hits and 90s. I would never pay for a subscription. Very tinny sounding.

You are right. Has nothing to do with reception.

Everyone knows they only point those satellites toward big cities.

mine sounds fine, sounds equally as good (or maybe even better) than the sound I get when playing my iPod through the USB connection in the center console. Very happy with the satellite radio

No problems here.

If stuff sounds tinny, try another source. It might be an indication of trouble with an amplifier or something.

I haven't had a problem with mine at all. Haven't really listened to FM stations since I got it.

I have used all the sources. cd and music off of usb sound great! FM radio sounds like FM radio (pretty good) Satelite radio sucks. I tried different channels and they just sound like a low bit quality. Definetly not worth 17 bucks a month.

Yeah it's Satellite radio. I've NEVER heard it having very good sound in any vehicle I've ever been in that had it. They're probably using some pretty heavy compression to save bandwidth when they beam it up to the satellites. I'll listen to it when there's jack on the radio, I'm out of FM range for a good station, and I don't want to listen to my CD's or have my MP3 player with me. I don't see myself renewing it when the 12 months that it came with is up.

edit: The ONLY reason I even have it in the first place is it's a required option if you want the bluetooth connectivity group which I did.

I love my Sirius Radio. (especially the Spice Channel)...lol

Seriously, I think the quality is great. The best quality is my iPod, then Sirius, then FM frequency radio. I listen to Country 90% of the time.

TONS of compression! Each channel has to fit the encrypted and compressed audio, song information, and some other control packets in less than 125khz of bandwidth space.(FM is 200khz) So the audio is compressed down to fit smaller than the bandwidth space to allow the encrypted overhead and other packet information.

It is worse than AM quality and phonograph records.

Mine is fine as long as the channel is not playing the concert recordings, which I assume is just poor recording. Quality-wise this is how I would rate what I hear : USB/AUX > FM/SAT/Bluetooth > AM.
Overall, I am mostly disappointed by the Bluetooth streaming quality...!

I don't get it. Maybe it varies by location in the US? Down here in GA, my Sirius is far superior to anything over the air. I have it in my 2011 Sonata and is also crystal clear. When I put my iPod shuffle on, equally as good. I haven't listened to FM much anymore due to the SAT quality. OCTANE 37!

Based on how the thread started, I wonder how many Jeepers had the standard stereo system and how many the Infinity upgrade with subwoofer? I have the latter system and Sirius, CDs, and Ipod sound very good. I was a little surprised the roll bar speakers were not as loud so I faded the sound and the bar speakers and sub woofer really came into play. Stereo sound certainly not the reason I purchased my JK but good sounding music certainly doesn't hurt!

mine sounds fine and I have the standard system. But after years of listening to cheap tiny radios at work anything sounds good to me.

I have a 2012 JKU Sahara and live in rural area of the western NC mountains. My sounds great. I have a 2011 Town & Country with the 730N RHR media center and it sounds the same as the JKU which has the 130 RES unit . I can't tell the difference between the two. Did you check another Wrangler with the same equipment to see if there was a difference?

The fewer streams of music, the more rich and uncompressed they can allow those streams to be. When XM and Sirius both started, they did have fewer stations broadcasting through each of their satellites and the audio streams were far less compressed. Now years later after XM all but folded and Sirius started pumping some of the XM streams through their satellite they had no choice but to reduce the bitrate of the audio stream in order to broadcast their existing channel catalog and the additional new XM stations that were transitioned to their satellite.

I cancelled my subscription in my daily driver for this reason and made them very aware that was the reason I was doing so. I will let my free year expire on my JK as well unless they magically decide to prune out all the crap stations and up the bitrates once again. (Don't worry, they won't.)

Your radio is fine, your speakers are fine. If you want to blame anyone, blame XM for not being able to stay solvent. Ultimately you can blame Sirius.

that sounds a bit too extreme. AM has a bandwidth in the range of 10KHz or so..I don't see how sat. radio can be worse than that.
