I was hoping that Rallylights would be that vendor but I'd be happy with any vendor that was honest, supportive, gave decent prices and knew what they were talking about...

I wasn't comfortable with my fellow members pitching in money. The nagging feeling that the product might not be all that good loomed over my head and then some member would "win" a craptastic set of lights...

But Jerry from TruckLite might be coming through. I'll talk to him later ---- seems like their budget might allow a sample set to make it down here after all.
I see their move as one inspired by confidence in the product and in us as consumers.
If these things put out decent light, they'll be the winners. You won't be able to beat a nice set of LEDs for longevity (biggest Cibie/Philips complaint).
Great news! Thanks for the update!

That's great news. Obviously, like everyone has already stated, we take your reviews very seriously when considering any lighting product. A smart, confident vendor would see that as an opportunity instead of a liability. Hopefully it works out and they will have a great review.

So the other light thats out that would be great to test is the hellfire hid conversion from rebel offroad its a hid swap in stock reflector so i remain skeptical about cutoff however they claim the cutoff is good and the utube video showing the lights does seem to support that claim it would be interesting to test them out as they seem to have good backing behind their kit

Also for anyone looking at the trucklites discount fleet supply is currently selling the new ones at 489 for the pair plus 16 for the h13 adaptor which seems like a pretty reasonable deal

That kit is NOT legal to install for use on roads.

I won't go into the lengthy details (for the huntredth time at least) but, just trust me, they're not legal.

Glad to see some light at the end of the tunnel on the potential review.

Absolutely understood neither is speeding on the road however the question was to see how they actually test out not whether they were legal i would have ignored it if the claims on the site were not such that they say they arent having glare issues with this retrofit although it seems unlikely given the methodology.

At any rate, much appreciate the review work you are doing. It is an incredibly useful resource to have an objective test with the same setup on multiple contenders. Thanks again for taking the time and energy to do so, and I'd be happy to PayPal over some beer funds etc to help contribute to your testing. Looking forward to seeing your results on the trucklites. They are my top contenders at the moment if they prove out to do what they claim. I have more expensive LED lights on my bicycle, so at 489 for the set I'm in if they work.

I'd put a meter to them if somebody nearby had a set.
I don't have a goniometer though and could only measure the actual LUX values.
But I'd be able to look for stray light, light that was too high, too wide, etc.
I'd expect them to behave somewhat like a Maglite when it's out of focus.

Thanks for the beer offer. Meet me sometime while camping and I'll drink one of yours.

So does anyone sell a hid complete kit that is legal or are they all illegal?

The Hellfire kit sounds a bit expensive using the stock reflectors.

I'll be there. Look for me hanging out with Tacodoc, Bunduguy, Frenchie (forgot which vendor he'll be helping), and any other trouble-makers.

BWT, I got another email from TruckLite. I'd like to share a bit:

If there's one thing you can pass along to the group, it's that this lamp had many considerations taken from what forums have asked for, from the performance to the styling. We're happy to listen, and love to participate when it's requested.

I do think the new lights are an improvement, considerably. The light pattern is a lot smoother than the last lamp (generally, it's the strongest point), fuller and wider than anything else we've tested it against. It was a cool process to review where the light was being distributed during the prototype models, choosing where to redirect the light for the best visibility. I'm not an engineer, but it seemed like we did what was best for the driver in what we accomplished with it. Plus, I'm quite partial to the installed appearance, and it draws almost half the power of its predecessor.

The feedback is excellent, and always makes it back to our internal folks for review and discussion. We're taking it as gospel at this point, and really trying to make the product the market wants.
I'm encouraged by a company that keeps refining their product based on customer needs, input, & experience. I can't wait to fire up these new lights.

Sounds promising. I hope these work out and maybe even get you back into a Jeep?

I'd like another Jeep ---- but the Power Wagon is just so nice on roadtrips...

If I had the room, it would be hard to choose between a JK and a Mog. I think the Mog would win though.

Unimogs are awesome.

I have 3 friends with them. I think I got all of them in the slideshow from camping last month:

Sorry I missed this.
Not a complete kit but, you can get a pair of Valeo/Sylvania XE7 lights (no other model from them; the rest are garbage) and install them with an adapter like I described from Rallylights.com. The PWM circuit would need to be smoothed out via a capacitor, just like with LEDs.
Also, the "bucket" for the light is larger than stock and would hit the nubs and airbag sensor in the JK, just like installing a JW Speaker #8700 LED light. You'd have to work around this on your own; see my "headlight shootout" on the other forum for solutions that have been used.

I frankly feel that the light from LEDs is superior to HID. Human eyes differ though and some people prefer HID.

Bill, do you know offhand the frequency and peak to peak range on the PWM waveform? I'm an electrical engineer by background, and it doesn't sound like it would take much to design the circuit for this. I'm probably going to go ahead and get the LED lights, and then just build my own, but don't have the Jeep yet (or for that matter a handy oscope)

I datalogged the test but wife asked me to record some music on a thumbdrive and I used that one by mistake...
...all I have is what I wrote down at the time and one screen capture.

Since I was datalogging, I didn't really pay very close attention. It was bumpy, the low was 4.5v and the high was 12.6v.

Ordered! Now I'll go pace back and forth by the door waiting for the UPS guy to show up.

No worries. Not much to go on there to get the actual period. If I had to guess it looks like in the ms range, but I'll need to wait for the real thing and put a scope on ...

Where are you?
Do you have a good scope?

It was REALLY short, btw.

Maybe I could manage to scope Chris' JK while I swap the lights out too.
It's just that we're busy around here and I don't usually have a loaner handy when I can get a JK in the parking lot...

I ordered the SMS harness, & he told me that the PWM basically turns the power off ~20% of the time.

I think these will fit:

I didn't record any "off" period during the cycle and that would actually be sorta illegal ---- headlights can modulate but not turn off or strobe.
I've been trying to avoid that sort of terminology since the LED headlights without a capacitor in the pigtail would technically strobe and technically be illegal... ...even if only epileptics would notice it...

The PWM cycles down to a low of 4.5v and that period is measured in milliseconds.
