Hmmm, i'm really confused. I purchased my jeep from a shop that has customized Jeeps for 27 years and are very well versed in mods.

2013 JK Sport 4 door 1/2 doors 5 speed, automatic, 5 in lift, steering stabilizer

I have 38's and 3.73, BUT, this is my first Jeep. It pulls away from a stop slow and smooth, any trails i've hit seem fine, and on the highway it does 70-75 mph without issue. Am I simply too accepting of the ride, or should I be more focused on this re-gearing thing. It did come with a AEV procal tuner - so that definitely helps. The usage is more for my hunting lease, some trails for fun, mostly hunting, and some DD, but not 100%. I work from home so DD is more like errands and the like.

Thoughts? (and you can't say 'more $ than brains', the wife's patented that one )

Tech forums are great but one thing they do is cause a person to second guess everything they have and are happy with. If there were no wranger tech forums there would be a lot more people running around happy as clams with stock gearing especially on 12-13 models. I have a 13 with 33" tires and auto and it is responsive and some times I suprise my self when I accellerate hard and chrip a tire.

Congrats! The downside.....lots of time to second guess.

Just a couple of thoughts: newly installed gears shouldn't make noise. At least according to the dealer. I am obsessing over gear patterns and parts- he said if it doesn't make noise and the diff fluid is clear- I am good. A slight whine could be backlash and that's easy to look at- as someone mentioned. It might be worth asking about OP.
Also, I can't remember who is doing them- but 4.33s are on the way. With 34s I expect 4.56s will be too much, but since 4.10s are stock I didn't want to go there either. If I had patience, which I don't, I'd wait for 4.33s.
It's impressive you are doing it yourself. I would have never even considered it. Whine has gotten better or we just aren't hearing it now. Like I said it was very very slight.

I was more than a little disappointed in my drop in MPG's after installing the 35's, but that being said, I'm not unhappy at all with the power I have in the other gears. And if I raised (or lowered) my ratios to 4.56 or 4.88 I'd be shifting a whole lot more, especially in town. The only time I really feel underpowered is rolling on the throttle in 6th gear. I downshift to 5th and I'm good to go. So it begs the question, what would I gain to do this? If it's for better off roading, fine. I don't do a great deal of off road, and certainly nothing too extreme. If it nets me better fuel mileage, then I might be interested, then again... I'll just stay in 5th. Mission accomplished.
The wife drove out to the country to help a friend yesterday and did some more running around today. She might actually use up a half 3/4 of tank by the end of the week. If so I will have some numbers by then.

I think I've said it before but I really have not been super unhappy with the 3.73 set up as I have it when it comes to on road driving. But off road is a completely different story and it is pretty miserable and I haven't even done any "real" rock crawling style wheeling in it. You have to feather the clutch so much with the manual with any kind of binding on the wheels off road. Makes it very hard to what you are trying to do with much grace.

I do plan to start doing "real" wheeling this spring which I think is what pushed me over the edge on the 4.88. I know I will appreciate it while "crawling". I will post some follow up videos of my wheeling trips this spring to show the gearing in an off road environment. Of course I won't have the 4.56 to compare it to. I need to get down to the hunting land to get a few blinds and my climber out of the woods. Maybe I can do that before the regear and at least so how the 3.73 compares in that environment to the 4.88 later on.

Likely true! You don't know how bad you have it until someone tells you how bad you have it.

Wife finally ran the tank down enough to justify putting gas in it. The gas used was a good mixture of hwy and city driving. Almost a 50/50 split of both. Computer was reporting an Avg ECO of 13.0 mpg. Hand calculating at the pump proved that to be almost exactly on as I came up with 13.04 mpg.

Not that great....that puts it in the same neighborhood as my Raptor. But like I've said the main driver in the decision to go 4.88 wasn't mpg. This is also the first tank through it with that gearing and I suspect with some practice it will get a bit better as using the right gear becomes 2nd nature.

If we see those numbers improve I will come back and report it.

Can you start off in 2nd gear ???

Could you pull a boat up a ramp without using 4-low now ?

Thanks,
Hydro

Yes to 2nd. On the boat I really don't know. It doesn't want for power at all though. As long as it was within the tow rating I wouldn't see why not.

I dropped off the Gecko at the shop this morning to have the 4.88's installed in it. Hopefully I will have it back in a couple of days.

It is funny how a month changes your prospective. The 4.88 was such a shock when we had them put in our red one a month ago. It felt like I was shifting way too much and the RPM's ran higher than comfortable on the highway.

Forward a month later after I've had more time behind the wheel and the 4.88 feels very normal. I no longer feel like I'm shifting too often or that the RPM's on the highway are bothersome. As a matter of fact my wife followed me up in the red one this morning when I dropped off the Gecko. I drove the red one home and it felt so normal I had a brief moment of "oh sh*t", maybe I should be going even higher than 4.88's on the Gecko. I soon got over it and settled back into 4.88 having been the right choice.

I feel fairly strongly now that while 4.56 would have been better than we had, it still would have felt somewhat under powered after living with it for a while. I'm very happy I went 4.88. I've had a few higher horsepower (500+ being the most) rides in my life and it feels similar to those experiences. At first it feels so quick and like so much power. Then after a few months of driving it everyday you start thinking where did all that power go because what used to feel quick feels normal.

So far gas mileage over the last month in the red one with the 4.88's in it already has held rock steady right around 13 mpg. I have also been keeping close track of the mpg in the Gecko over the last month. I've been right at about 15 mpg on average with the 3.73's. Will be curious if I also see 13 mpg once I get it back or if there is a driving style difference between my wife and I since she is behind the wheel of the red one 95% of the time.

By going higher you mean numerically as in 5.13's?

Yeah sorry I should have said that more clearly. To clarify now that I'm more used to the 4.88 I could see going 5.13 and not being unhappy about it. Not going to be looking to do that but if it was forced upon me for some reason I'd likely not complain.

One other side note. We will be heading to the beach for spring break next weekend. It will be the first longish trip with the 4.88's. About 3 1/2 hours each way. Will also be the first time I've had that gearing on the beach. Will report back if the long trip or beach itself change or reinforce my current opinion.

Beach was crazy cold so we came home early. Didn't end up getting out on the beach so I can't speak to any beach driving with the new gears.

I did manage better than 17mpg coming home though. I'm very happy about that!

You WERE getting 15mpg with 3.73 and rolling 35s? Good lord, maybe mines not "broken in" yet (1,7xx) miles, but im getting anywhere from 11.3-12.1. I dont drive mine rough at all either, and thats just city driving.

I don't recall what I was getting when it was new but it seems like it was but better than what you are seeing. I'm a bit over 11k in the odometer as of today.

Are you an auto or manual? Mine is a manual.

I'm sure you are going to love it. I'm not disappointed in the least now that I've gotten used to the 4.88.

Yeah mine is a auto. Seems like a huge difference but maybe because of just city driving.
Oh well, if i was REAL worried about it, i would have bought a hybrid , well maybe not that far.

It's your city driving. Mine sucks the gas down at work where I rarely break 10mph during a shift. I was shocked to see it averaged 7mpg at work one night.

Make yourself feel better and take it on the highway for a 20 minute trip. After you get cruising, reset the mpg thing on the dash. Check it when you exit the highway. Mine will average 20-22mpg highway going 60-75mph.

Hope im not being too personal, whats the cost break down. excluding. things like adding lockers. when your regearing.

i have 3.21 and looking to regear, i do alot of off roading, hardly any hwy. i was thinking 5.13. i run 33's atm. and love them. but when they wear, i will be going 35's. thats going to be the largest i go, as i still daily drive this into work. and around town.

im trying to figure what the cost would be out the door to regear? you can PM me if your not comfortable disclosing this on the thread. thanks.

The cost will vary depending on where you live. I've seen it stated on the forum that people have paid between $1200 and $2000 total. Unless you do it yourself the big expense is the labor. In my area I talked to 3 different shops and the price was on the upper end of the scale at all 3.

The front and rear gears themselves with master install kit ran me about $800 just for the parts from the shop I used. If you are running 3.21 you will need a carrier as well. That is about $80 additional. The rest of the expense is just the labor. It is a very labor intensive job to do.

I can't really speak to the ratio you are considering but I have seen others going that route with an auto (on 35's not 33's that I've seen). It appears most with a manual are going 4.56 or 4.88 (on 35's). Now that I'm used to it I'm completely in love with the 4.88 and very glad I didn't go 4.56 in my manual.

Hope that is some help to you.

What part of VA are you? I'm in southern MD, right on MD VA state line. Was looking for a shop to do my regear and the prices you stated are better than I have been getting.
