2012 Personal Road Trip Summary Notes

Went on a 560 mile total distance road trip this weekend from Chicago to central Michigan. My findings:

Mileage 19.2 MPG - this is unmod'ed JK with auto and 4.10 gearing, soft top all buttoned up , 90+ pct highway miles

Bugs - in the evening on the highway, I thought for a moment it was raining , then realized it was the continuous heavy sound of dozens of bugs splattering on my windshield !

Tollways - the iPass/ez-pass/iZoom transponder has a high miss rate apparently due to the steep angle of the windshield - had to wave it outside the window or give it to the attendant a couple of times instead of quickly driving through

2Dr is too small for 3 people on anything longer than a weekend assuming bags and gear are inside. For 2 people it would be fine with rear seat removed

No hood flapping at all , speeds up to 80 mph

The drive is as expected Jeep-like. The Jeep skitters and dances a bit in the lane and requires more driver attention than a passenger car. The ride is a bit bouncy as well. Noise level in the cabin with the soft top is not bad, best when not near other vehicles.

Got more than one jeep wave - tried to return them all.

3rd passenger complained about getting jn/out of the back seat but also said it was comfortable for sleeping

All in all a decent test for my upcoming grand tour of the west

I just did a round trip from NY to Florida, hated the thick steering wheel after a few states.

Sounds like a good time. I have gotten a lot of mail from EZ pass on just that issue. What a hassle.....Albeit mine was going through the speed lane.

I too just returned from a 500+ mile round trip that included trails in the LBL national forest. I got 18.9 MPGs coming home with the A/C running and totally loaded with camping gear. Not bad...not bad at all.

I've run into the same problem my EZ-Pass in NY - very frustrating. I did some searching online, and found some recommendations for putting it in the lower left-hand side of the windshield (behind the registration & inspection stickers). I tried that on a short road trip last weekend & all the tolls registered (including one that normally gives me trouble). I've got a longer road trip coming up next weekend when I'll really be able to put that theory to the test - keeping my fingers crossed...

Tell then you want a bumper mount, then bolt it behind the grill, invisible and works 99%. Just make sure you take it out if you sell

I travel ALOT over the toll roads in the Chicagoland area, I've never once had my Izoom miss.

Where do you place it?

I just moved to Wisconsin from Michigan and travel through Chicago a lot and need to get an iPass ASAP. I'd rather have it register than deal with it later

The eZpass here in VA is also hit and miss. I had it atop of the windshield and got tons of misses. Also swapped out for a new unit, same results. Dropped it toward the bottom near the dash and it seems to work better.
