2012 Regear Issue

Saw this post on FB from a local after market shop and thought I would pass along to forum members. Sorry if this is already been covered.

*******Attention all 2012 wrangler buyers.*******
The new motor and computer programming will not allow you as of yet to change the gear ratio of your wrangler, PERIOD. Regearing will cause your JK to go into limp mode, because it reads diff speed and wheel speed in order to shift gears. DO NOT REGEAR YOUR 2012 JK until further notice.

Sounds like a Vehicle Speed Sensor issue. The manuals probably have them as well, but obviously not to control the shifts. Might still cause an issue.

I could see the auto getting jacked up, but can't see how a manual could get hosed? doesn't make sense.

It can't. You can't use a programmer to program shift points on a manual.

Limp mode does not sound anything like just changing the shift points. I've had 4 JK's so far, 3 manuals and one auto and I have regeared 3 of them and could still drive them without flashing anything. From what I'm hearing now is that u can't even drive it with gear swap in a 2012?? That's nutty.

I really don't think that's what's happening here. I think people are confusing programming shift points (gears) with differential gears.

It has to do with changing the programming and the computer not liking it. Instead of total failure, it will go into limp mode to get you safely off the road. It's a safety feature.

Heard of it but not understanding how changing the diff gears would set it off.
Sin made a comment about the "veritable speed sensor" what's that-is my ?

that's what I'm trying to say. People are confusing shifting gears with changing gears!

Who is confusing shifting gears with changing gears??

Re-gearing is changing gears (axle gear ratio), we all agree on that right?

Limp mode is turned on in the Auto's after you re-gear (or so we are all hearing).

did i miss something else that people are getting confused? so many threads about this subject on so many sites...

I stating that limp mode is NOT turned on by changing differential gears. Whoever stated such is the person confused. The rest of you are merely spreading the confusion. If you change the shift points you will go into limp mode. That is what I think is happening and these people are causing a commotion by confusing the two.

I talked to the mechanic on FB. The shop is Screaming Lizard customs in Hurst, TX. He did indeed say this is a differential gear swap. They were putting 5.x's into a 2012 and it sent the computer into limp mode. Follow up with manufacturer confirmed. They had to pull out the new gears and put the 3.73's back in.

That will slow down the sales a little I would think.

Well I have 35"s on my 2012 with the stock 4:10s and feel no need to re-gear with the new motor. I still want to re-gear down the road but don't have any need for it now.

So hopefully it won't hamper the sales.

My guess from the info in this thread is it is being caused by the wheel speed sensors not matching what the transmission output speed sensor is reading.

If it is a transmission limp then it would lock the 5 spd trans into one gear (not sure which, probably 3rd).

Once the aftermarket tuners crack the new ECM you'll be able to change the gear ratios in the tuning and have everything jive.

Here is an update from Screaming Lizard:

Warning: Changing gears on a 2012 JK will cause it to go into limp mode.
2012 JK Wranglers now include the A580 transmission. With this new trans comes a new trans controller, and unfortunately this controller is programmed to put the vehicle into limp mode if it senses a change in gear ratio. Even a Jeep dealer cannot override this.
AEV has a fix for this and we are currently working on integrating it into our ProCal Module. In the meantime, we recommend that you hold off on changing the gears in any 2012s. We expect ProCals with the updated code to be available by the end of September.

Common sense tells me this isn't true. If it is, then how do they account for the fact that the factory offers 3 different gear ratios?

Why is the shop trying to throw in 5.x's in a 2012? That would be my first question of the day. Maybe it is a trail rig only...because even with 35's you will be looking at 3000 rpms at 70mph.

But outside of that...I'm sure the programming will be cracked soon enough.

Jeep dealerships can only program to the available factory gear ratios. Anything above a 4.10, and you are out of luck. From what I understand this applies for all JK's not just the '12.

Maybe someone who has re-geared can chime in here, but I don't recall anyone having to use a programmer because they changed their differential gears.

I've changed gears in a few JK's and you never had to flash it to drive, but on the auto flashing the new gear size helped with shift points. On the manuals it didnt matter.

So what ever is going on in the 2012s sounds like some poor programming in the design to me.

Quick google check I found another shop having the same issue. Not sure why a well known 4x4 shop would publish this if it isn't true, but ok. I certainly have not a 2012 nor tried to regear one
