2012 Rubi Rattle

My '12 JKUR has 350 miles on it now and besides being in "hog heaven" I have been noticing a peculiar rattle that I can hear and feel through the steering column. This occurs at very slow speed (5-10+ MPH) when turning and hitting small bumps in the road. It does not seem to be getting worse so I'm not terribly worried about it yet.

Anyone else have this?

I'll be taking it in for it's first oil change next weekend so I'll bring it up to the service guys.

Sounds like the notorious intermediate shaft issue. It will get worse, or at least more frequent. Mine does it, but I haven't taken it to the dealer yet.

After searching the forum on your description I have to say that sounds like what I am experiencing. We'll see how the visit to the dealer does...

At least it doesn't sound like more than a nuisance - albeit an annoying one!

Thanks.

Ok found my rattle by banging on steering wheel I could recreate it...I noticed the horn/air bag cover has a lot of play in it so I grabbed a piece of paper and shimmed it in there....woohooo no more rattle while driving...ahhh now I can enjoy the ride.....still taking it to dealer in morning to get a permanent fix

Same thing with mine. It just started rattling after a week. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow.

Keep us in the loop. I have a 12JKUR as well with about 250 miles on the clock. I'll be listening for anything peculiar. So far nothing out of the ordinary...but I figure I have 100,000 more miles for things to go wrong:-) Well, knock on wood.

Are you planning on doing an awful lot of driving before next weekend? 350 mile oil change!?

I have this problem also. It seems to happen at low speed when turning left. If I can recreate the problem I will be going to the dealer also.

I had this rattle. I got my Jeep with 4 miles on it. Drove it about 200 miles with no rattle over a couple of weeks. It sat for a week, drove it after it sat and the rattle was there. It wasn't bad at first but after 75 miles it got really bad. Finally took it to the service department. They found the airbag was installed upside down! They fixed it, no more rattle and now my airbag will work.

Yep, me too. Very minor though, gets worse the more driving I do.

You hit it on the head - this is whats going on with mine. Since it's not serious (I think?) I'm going to wait until I get back from my Fall fishing/camping trip before I take it in.
What has me puzzled is why this type of vibration/deflection comes right through the steering wheel into the guts of the airbag. I would have thought it would be better isolated.

Thanks for nailing it down Bengen1!

You may want to read my post and rethink the wait on taking it in...

Just got mine back from the dealer and yep it was the airbag. Only my airbag wasn't upside down. Instead the ring holding the airbag in the steering wheel didn't have the foam spacer between the ring and the airbag. The foam was just loose in the column below the retaining ring.

Hi guys, sorry I thought I posted what the permanent fix was a week ago when I took it in to dealer, yes it was a loose foam ring and replaced it for me as well.... Took about 20 min, no mention of an upside down airbag though!!

Mine's at the dealership right now. I'll let you know what it is when I find out.

So they have ordered a new air bag module and new horn contacts which won't be in for a week. What's interesting is that they told me my Jeep is safe to drive until they get the parts in.

Of course it's safe to drive! Getting into a head on accident, probably not so much.

Good ole' UAW attention to detail and quality. Also proof that if the team at assembly doesn't work to mistake proof (aka PokeYoke) things, anyone can and will make a mistake that at best will be a nuisance and at worst cause a loss of life. Hopefully the warranty and quality departments have a good communication channel to prevent this from making in too many Jeeps.

This is ironic...my Rubi is on order but my dealer just got one in yesterday so I test drove it and the steering wheel had a rattle...sales guy said they are aware of the issue and already ordered replacement airbag parts....it only had 3 miles on it Haha. Heres to hoping mine isn't like this.

The dealer had initially told me they thought it was normal but they would check a new one on the lot (mine has 1300 miles on it - its old I guess) and all I could think was - what if the new one has the same problem? I'm sure it would have convinced them it was normal!

Yea the dealer I went through already received a couple rattle complaints so that's how they already know the fix.

Mine has a rattle/vibration (360 miles)
I can wedge a piece of cardboard between the wheel and the horn button/airbag and it stops

Guess I'll call the dealership and see if They have a clue how to fix it

So is all this rattling attributed to an improperly installed airbag (upside-down)? Or is the horn/airbag cover the problem for some of you. I'm making a list of things to check over once my Rubi gets in ... seems odd that it's only affecting Rubicons, though: I'm sure the other trims have this problem, too.
