2012 Sunrider Soft-op issue...

2012 Sunrider Top Issues
Since day 1 Ive had a VERY hard time getting the little pin that locks the sunrider portion of the soft-top to lock into place when Im putting the top back up. IS there some trick to it or is mine maybe bad?

Its not the latch on the front, its the pin/release thats above the door. The drivers side clicks right in and locks fine, but the one on the passanger side wont click into the lock position. The only way I can get it to lock in, is to climb into the jeep, stand on the passsanger seat facing the rear of the jeep, and really reef on the top pulling it forward HARD to get it to latch... And even then it takes 10-15 attempts for it to catch on that pin and stay locked into place.

I know this cant be right.

I dont see anything to adjust, and that latch looks like its just riveted on the door surround.

Probably something to take to the dealership to have them replace, But I thought I'd ask here first if anyone has any suggestions???

I took mine to the dealer when I had my 11. The JKU design is much much better.

You either have something incorrect in your setup or it defective. I suspect the first. I would look at another 2012 setup (dealers lot?) or a nearby friend. Mine goes up and down without issue and the latch connects without any binding or adjustment. EDIT: read previous post..mine is a JKU

Are you having the problem trying to put the top in the closed position from the full down position, the Sunrider position, or both?

Sunrider position is fine since you leave those pins alone.

I have the problem when going from full down to up, or full down to sunrider. The pin on the passenger side above the door just doesnt want to click in and lock into place.

Drivers side works fine, I dont see any way to adjust anything other than some possible tweak or secret technique that others have devised with similar issues on their tops.

When you go to full down are you leaving the Sunrider sliding plastic in the full rear position?

I have the same issue on my '11 2 door except the drivers side is a pita. I get the passenger side locked in then sit inside and shut the sunrider completely. When the front latches pull the top tight the drivers side pin pops right in every time.

At times I too had troubles with the passenger pin.

What I do is pull the rear corners of the back out of the body channels and lift up on the center bow. Sometimes they will latch on themselves other times I have to guide them in but it does help.

Hope this makes sense

When going back up from the fully retracted position, I stand in the back and lift the whole top up to above the rear seats then let the front fold forward. Jump out and go to the sides and lock them in. At this point the rear is sitting completely loose. Thats on a 2010 2 door. Not sure if the 2012 is any different, but maybe somethings a little bent?

Pretty much how I do it, lifting up the whole top

I do the same as these. Mine is also a pain to get the pins in, but not attaching the rear corners until after they are seated does the trick.

Latch the windshield header first. Attach the rear corners last.
Then open the sunrider.

Ok, I have the same problem, kinda. The pin latch above the drivers side door will not go forward (or lie flat) enough to line up with the catch and when I close the sunrider top fully there is about 1 1/2" gap on the drivers side. I tried undoing the back (anchor panels?) but that doesn't seem to help. I have tugged, pushed and pulled for the last 4 hours! I just got this Jeep on Saturday and took the hardtop off relatively easily and spent all of today trying to get this to work properly. All my windows are in right and everything looks good, but I'm totally baffled and exhausted now! If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears ... And thumbs apparently!



Oh yeah, 2 door Sahara 2013. I even tried chasing down what I thought was a Wrangler from that distance but it turned out to be an old Land Rover and he wasn't interested in talking.

When I put my top up, I first throw the whole top forward and I hook the latches to the loops on the windshield, but don't tighten them. This kind of holds it in place and keeps it from naturally wanting to fall backwards. Once that's done I kind of put one hand on the top over the sunrider latch, and then reach around the roll cage pole and simultaneously push on the top frame behind the roll cage bar, and push down on the sunrider latch.

Thanks PhotoWrangler, I did try to do something like that before I put the windows in but I think I'm going to have to start completely over (take out windows, put the top down etc) and try again. With or without the windows, it seems like something is bent on drivers side. It's incredibly hard to latch without anything attached in back. I may have to bite the bullet and drive the 2 hours to the dealership tomorrow and have them show me what's up.

Ok,for anyone that has the same problem as I did here's what you do...
1)Take out the window on the misaligned side
2)Loosen the stay on the same side
3)Get a guy that is 220lbs +\- and have him stand on the side, pull the bar forward (inside where it starts to bend down) and push down on the sunrider clasp bar with all his might at the same time. It WILL click in... Eventually
5)Zip window back in
6)Attach the stay again
7)Put the window lip back in
8)Leave the sunrider top closed for a couple of days and park in the sun so it stretches a little
9)Don't forget to slide the plastic sleeves back over the sunrider joint

This was done at the service department of my dealership. Worked like a charm! Just needed someone that had more muscle and wasn't afraid he was gonna break anything. According to Roger, the service guy, in a few days I should be able to open and close the sunrider with little trouble. I'm just happy it opens and closes without pliers!
