2012 versus 2013 Sunrider Top

I did a forum search, but could not find anything conclusive on this.

For those who picked up the 2013s already, does your standard Sunrider soft top have the assisted springs or is that "feature" only available on the Premium option?

I can pick up a NIB 2012 Softtop/hardware locally, but found a 2013 for sale (also NIB) about 45 minutes away.

Assuming both are the same price, is it worth the 90 minute round trip to pick up the 2013 model or are they essentially the same?

It really depends on whether it is the Premium Sunrider Softtop they introduced in 2012 which is an additional option, instead of 1 ply it is 3 which is a lot more insulation.

I believe all the 2013's have the spring assist feature. Having had an 08, it's really nice and makes a huge difference in the ease of putting the top up and down. If you want to check, have them send you a picture of it, it should have 2 plastic boxes on the bows, one on each side. Aslo make sure you get the brackets that bolt to the roll bar for either top, the 2013's are different than the 2012, but you'll need the brackets in either case.

Thank you! Just to verify, will the brackets that come with the 2013 models fit the 2012 even though they are different? (assuming I go with the 2013 top).

No, the 2013 brackets will only work with the 2013 tops. The 2012 and back all use the same bracket, but it is substantially different than the 2013 one. People always sell the top and forget to unbolt the metal bracket on the roll bar, which the top won't bolt on without.

i was pretty sure that the premium top is 3 ply and spring assisted, where the regular 13 tops were the same as the 12s. someone must know.

I meant that if I have a 2012 but purchase a 2013 top with brackets, I'll be okay? Most that I've seen are new in the box but I'll check for brackets.

I've seen a couple of 2013 tops new in box, so as long as I get the 2013 brackets I'm guessing they will still bolt onto the roll bar of the 2012.

I guess my original question was if BOTH the standard sunrider and premium sunrider have the spring assist, in which case if I can find them for the same money I'm better off with the 2013 versus 2012.

Thanks for all the help here! The dealer doesn't even have the 2013 Premium top listed as a sku yet.

Yeah I misread that, sorry. As long as you get the brackets, you should be fine.

I believe all the 13 tops for the Unlimited have the spring assist. I was looking at one on a Sport S this summer that I think was not a premium top, but had the spring assist.

EDIT: So I just went to the dealers website and looked at inventory. They had multiple JKU's without premium top, but have spring assist. That seems to confirm my understanding that premium top or not, they all have the spring assist.

What does this bracket look like and where is it on the roll bar? I just bought a soft top that was a takeoff and am not sure I got this bracket.
