Mine will probably be used in snow more than anything else. It will also be used as a business vehicle that must be able to get out no matter what.

Since the Rubi is only available with locking differential, and a LSD is not available would I be better suited with a well equipt Sahara, with an LSD differential? What I like about the Rubi is it is more beefy, stock that is, has a higher resale value, and a stronger transfer case. I need some hard core Jeepers to set me straight. I don't think I'll be doing any hard core Rock Crawling. I don't want to be kicking myself in the ass for making a bad choice since I tend to keep vehicles a very long time, and try to buy the best and not look back. I've read a lot of the pro's and con's threads and become more confused. Thought I'd try here! As always thanks!
Allow me guys. I like the good ole locker vs LSD debate. In snow 4x4 is already ahead of the game. It's better than FWD and RWD. I even like 4x4 over AWD because you don't need all wheels working all the time. The LSD in the Jeep is only on the rear axle I believe so the front is still up to its own vices. With proper tires like blizzaks, the Sport would handle most conditions save for those that require studs which aren't legal everywhere or chains. The Sahara with the LSD will also get you through pretty much anything but the LSD enhances the open diff setup by transferring power from left to right as needed. If you're not going to off-road and will mostly be on-road with an occasional off-road stint then get the Sahara and save a few grand for other mods.

Lockers are really meant for off-road and that's the God honest truth. Or more specifically when you need all the traction possible because one or more wheels are without traction. Ever see any videos on ABS in gravel or sand? Its horrible but on a clean dry tarmac it's a dream and a life saver.

In conclusion open diffs are good for normal driving and snow in 4H. LSD is better than open diffs in both aspects but lockers are only for off-road applications. You can't drive with lockers on safely at speed. I believe there's a speed limit with lockers too. Once you get out of the snow with lockers (which may not be needed at all) you just put it back in 4H and continue on. The ultimate setup will be a Jeep that has both LSD and lockers. 2H and 4H uses LSD and 4L uses lockers.

Old Geezer mod...

Nothing earth shattering as far as a mod goes...but

I tend to get real irritated when after fishin' all day, I get back to my brand new JK Saraha to realize that I have lost my Jeep keys! (They are probably in some zippered pocket somewhere on this damn vest!)

Anyway, I am solving that incident with a "Hitch-Safe" vault for $69.00 I can't see using a magnetic hide-a-key on a Jeep bouncing around out in the hinterland. See whatcha think...

Hitch Safe, Key Storage Hitches, Hide Car Key, Auto Key Safe, Trailer Hitch Covers, Receivers

Demarpaint, you can also upgrade the Sahara as needed to cope with inclement weather. You can put aftermarket if you change your mind in a few years. These things are like lego. Just build to your hearts content. Or as much as your wallet can handle.

That is an excellent idea. I hate when I go paintballing and I'm running and diving I'm always worried if my keys fell out on the field.

I realize that, and its half the fun. What I "wish for" is LSD with the ability to lock the front and rear differentials, ASAIK it ain't happening.
I have two RWD vehicles and a 4X4 Liberty. One of the RWD is Limited Slip, which has never let me down, the other an open differential which is absolute garbage compared to the LSD.

I don't want to send someone my vin every time I want to see/check it. That would be upwards of 67 times a day. I appreciate it though.

Just think it through and if you do regret it, mod away my friend.

Thumbs up

First post, but long time forum stalker...

Just wanted to thank everyone here for all the great info. Deployed to Iraq right now, so I've been working on my order via email with the dealer all day today (literally under fire right as I pressed send on my order! That right there makes this Jeep special to me!), and just now finished placing my deposit.

Definately one of the things I'm most excited to come home to:

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara
5-Speed Automatic Transmission
Natural Green
Leather Trimmed Seats Black/Dark Saddle
Black 3-Piece Hard Top
Air Conditioning w/Auto Temp Control
3.73 Rear Axle Ratio
Supplemental Front Seat Side Air Bags
Dual Top Group
Connectivity Group
Remote Start System
Media Center 730N

I've been looking forward the 2012 Wrangler all year long, but I wouldn't have been able to get this order in today if it wasn't for the tremendous amount of info here. I was able to give my the salesperson every order code and exact description with no conflicts or errors, and the pricing was correct to the dollar. Plus I would never have known about the TL discount! What a great deal!

You guys rock, and thanks again! Really means a lot to me.

Pat...thanks for digging for this info. Good to know that trailer sway is included with both packages.

Hope you enjoyed your vacation!

And I have conceal weapons permit. I can carry in my jeep.
You pay property taxes every year but you only pay state sales tax on the vehicle when you purchase it. You never pay on the same vehicle again. If you purchase a new vehicle you pay $300 again. Not sure what you mean.

What he's saying, and I'll make the same offer, is PM your VIN, and we'll send you a link you can use as many times as you like. We can try to make sure it's right for you.

If you like.

My math says $35,179.06 with 2% under invoice.

Only on the fence about tow, will probably just go aftermarket or use an LoD bumper to carry the bike rack.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is how we DO THAT! In and out of the dealership in 20 min. 2% below invoice and the first '12 ordered at that dealership. Thanks fellas for all the tips and tricks. Your info and pricing was SPOT ON!

FWIW, still no option to confirm 4.10 gears. What's the best way to handle this pre-D1???

Factory Install??

Anyone know if the side steps are installed at the factory or just thrown in the back and tacked on at the dealership? Didn't order them, but am having second thoughts and already D-1...

I pay car taxes every year. Property tax is for my house. But once a year pay car taxes.

In states with no cap on vehicle sales they don't pay car taxes year.

Like I said, cap is good if you frequently get new car. No cap at sale is good if you keep car a long time.

I took this thread off topic so I apoligize. The original intent was to make folks aware of taxes on your new Jeep and things you should be aware of.

Since this is not a political discussion I will end my commentary/disagreement here.

So I win? Ha just kidding I wasn't debating merely pointing out a fallacy in statement. I love extra taxes as much as next guy.

Onward with 2012 info!

For those of us with the nav in the 2011 models the speedo will go as fast as u care to drive. It is GPS speed and and the nav is so smart it even tells u if you are speeding on any given road! The numbers turn red anytime u exceed the limit by even 1 MPH. Back in the day I used to bury the speedometer on my 71 nova, but some cars with a round dial you could go to the max speed and it would come on around so it would be like 120 plus 35 or so. If you are running over 100 in a wrangler you are probably going plenty fast and a given number really doesn't matter. No more cubic inch then the new Jesus motor has it will probably fall on it's ass pretty fast over the century mark as it will be drag limited. And it may be computer limited at some point also do to the speed rating of the tires. This isn't a LS3 vette motor we are talking about, it's just another turd gutless wonder mini van engine! No balls or torque. Just another screaming mini van engine. Noise that is.

So one thing I noticed. I did previously own a 2-Dr 2007 JK Sahara, one of the things I really liked about it was the YES! Essentials fabric. But when ordering my 2011 Rubicon, I noticed that it was the same seats in the base Sport model. Is the fabric that's in there now like the YES fabric or is it just the base fabric?
