I just test drove and purchased a fully loaded black sahara unlimited. It had arrived at the dealer as stock just 2 hours before i drove it. I had an 08 rubicon previously so i know a bit about the 3.8. The 12 is no peed demon but it feels like there is a noticeable uptick in power. Love the tan interior on the black.

ummm.... I only have a manual, I haven't driven the automatic. I like going through the gears, so well... I like it. However, (I also posted this elsewhere) I still think the throttle is a little stiff on the touch. When you have a manual, that leads to some nasty tip-ins (rpm's too low) and overspeeds (the opposite) going through the gears. It's a completely different feel from a manual TJ. I have the Rubicon, so it's geared lower by design. If you're driving on the streets, that means you have to dump from 1st to second already at about 10 mph (i.e., first gear is a granny). 2nd gear for that matter gets maxed out pretty quick as well, due to all the available torque. 3rd gear and 4th gear are monsters -- you can really use all the torque that the Pentastar gives up. In general, the engine torque makes going through the gears a lot of fun, once you get the feel for the clutch/throttle matching. I think that, if your application is a daily driver and you're not hell bent on going through the gears like I am, the automatic will be a good choice. Driving in the city with a manual Rubi can be a little bit of a chore sometimes if you have a lot of stop and start traffic in front of you. Maybe one of the guys that has an automatic can add their experience to this post and then you'll have both sides of the story.

Thank you for that review, it really helps! I'm going to test a automatic because there are no manuals available in my area. My sincere hope is that the auto tranny will withstand the test of time!? Any thoughts on Chrysler auto tranny lifespan?

That's a Mercedes tranny, and it should be very reliable.

Any truth to the rumor that the auto tranny zapps the power from the Pentastar?

No chance. Just check out all the posts in this thread from Up Hill Bill and others that bought JKU's with automatics. They're all happy campers as far as I can tell. I think that choice is all about what you like and how you'll use the vehicle.

The one I bought today is an auto. That's what I wanted. I love driving a manual and that's what my Rubi was, but there were three reasons I decided to go with the auto. First, I drive a ton in the city during stop and go traffic and I found the manual tiring in that environment. Secondly, my wife only drive auto and she wanted to drive the new jeep, so that added to the decision. Finally, the only 12 Sahara unlimited in stock was an auto.

And I will add that coming from an 08 Rubi I felt like I was driving a cadillac. The interior is much more refined (am told the 12 interior is the same as the 11s - never looked inside an 11 so don't know if this is the case).

Furthermore, the new auto/Pentastar combo is just simply amazing. It's as close to getting the real Jeep experience with a manual as we old timers with worn out knees could ever hope for.

If you've got young knees, get a manual. If not, no worries with this new auto!

rlast: I have to drive 250 miles to get to a 'city,' so a review of that type of driving... well, it may never come...

But, twisty-turny, steep, country roads... oh, so sweet to have compression-braking again! As I said before, JKU Rubi handles better than a GC!

I'm convinced. I have always driven manuals but am tired of paying attention! Kidding aside, I will look forward to testing out the auto and see if it fits.

Yeah, what he said.... and, ummmmm, then there are those of us who bought a manual with the intent of trying to keep our wives out of the new Jeep

True. But I have to sleep sometime, and I would prefer not to do it on the sofa with one eye open!

My wife was fired up I ordered a manual. She can drive it and we haven't had a manual in a while. I was excited, until I realized that meant she was excited to steal the Jeep especially down the shore in the summer.

Just the opposite. The zork gate intersperses with the parsec enhancer. Combined, those celestial spudfarkles provide the perfect alignment between the automatic transmission and the pentastar engine.

I called Jeep directly. They said my Jeep is in "Built to Frame" status (whatever that means), with a ship date of tomorrow (8/10)! Even sooner than what Insight says at the moment...

Need to correct my answer to this question:

I removed the front plate surround to get rid of the dealer ad and found that the front plate 'holder' is just a license plate surround screwed right to the plastic bumper with self-tapping screws. No bracket or anything like that.

I asked in another thread and realized this is probably the better place to ask. Does the engine bay have enough room for an auxiliary battery, and/or space for a bi-pass oil filter?

Thanks
