Yes. It only happens on cold morns, usually below freezing. Never noticed it in the warmer months. This morn it was down to 13 and still not rattle...so far so good.

Believe it or not, dealership informed me that the sound was normal after 3 days of inspection. Will try this out and see.

Thanks for the thread, it should be stickied. The sound is annoying and time consuming for a dealer check up.

My '13 is rattling/vibrating when cold. Based on sound, it seems exhaust related and it doesn't seem close enough to be right there in the dash. Either way, I will try your fix and report back.

I have a 1999 Wrangler with the same symptoms, noise when cold, no noise when warmed up. But when I pulled the glove compartment I could find no such lines. If I could find a way to find those lines I would try to do the same you did for your 2012. Obviously my heater lines come into the drivers quarters somewhere else.

Any ideas anybody?

Well, know what I am doing tomorrow. Thanks OP for the fix and pics. I was getting used to it though - it's a Jeep thing right? Thanks again.

Just to clarify from those of you that have had this problem. Is it more of a rattle or a buzz? I seem to have symptoms of metal banging metal but not so much a buzzing sound. Seems to be coming from the same area that everyone had described. Are there any other areas that someone may know about where there is a metal on metal type of clang? Thanks

My 2013 has a harsh buzzing sound on startup, 1800 rpm but goes away in less than one mile. The sound comes from the standard transmission hump. Have not had time to investigate. Removed glove box and checked heater hoses out of curiosity and found sufficient gap between them.

Any ideas where to start looking?

Any indications this might have been fixed in 2014 models? I have the same kind of buzzing/rattle as described. I think mine might also be the hood slots ?? (sure seems like thin sheet metal) and screen located in the center of the hood directly in front of the window.

thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been dealing with this noise on my 2013 (manual trans) for a few months. As others said, worse when its cold, but lately it's been all the time until it warms up (then it diminishes). Mine was most notable at 2300-2500 RPM. I read this post as I was about to tear apart my entire dash and literally ran to my jeep with a chunk of rubber. I'm so excited the vibration is gone that I want to run around my house like a cat that just took a poop. Instead, I will go run over something with my jeep.

Mine was coming from the passenger sun visor which was receiving vibrations from the frame against the lip on the right side of the visor and then rattling the plastic behind the visor.

I still need to do this. Mine only does it when I go over a certain set of train tracks.

There is another vibration/rattle issue that comes from the cable to the transfer case. It vibrates against the floor console at certain RPM under load and seems worse at certain temperatures. I fixed the one behind the glove box yesterday but I still have the console one to deal with. Good luck!

Here's what I did to eliminate this vibration. Installed a rubber hose around the shifter cable where it runs under the dash. Zip tied it tight and the noise is GONE!!!

I had the aluminum heater vibration but mine were spread apart from the factory. So, I used a zip tie and actually pulled them together a bit (not touching) so there was pressure on both lines..problem solved!

Seems like no matter how you do it, those lines are too long to not have some type of pressure on them (either from spreading apart or tying together).

I had a vibration that was absolutely driving me bonkers and I went through everything: heater lines, shifter cable, a-pillar cover, sun visors and even the fender liners. The vibration seemed to be coming from the dash area but it turns out that the source of the vibration was from the extra gas cap keys and a flashlight I keep in the center console. I guess it goes without saying, but no matter where it seems the noise is coming from, check your glove box and console box and adjust random loose items before you go tearing into your dash. On the plus side I fixed all the stuff that could eventually lead to noise.

Just ran across this thread after doing a search.
Bought my 2013 jk unlimited MOAB last Aug.Did notice this constant buzz type of rattle somewhere in center portion behind dash 4 months later, only when cold for the first 5 minutes under light acceleration. Here in Iowa its been the norm for 20 below air temp.Anyone know if the 2013 have had the same issue concerning to coolant lines in glove box area?
Thanks

I have tried everything suggested in this thread to alleviate the rattling in my 2013 to no avail. I still have the problem, seems like on and off though, not entirely consistent.

I used this fix on my 2013 JKU. Unbelievable relief to have it gone. I do still have a small rattle from something else, but I'll wait til its warm to go hunting for that one.

yesterday I attempted to fix the problem since it was very hot outside, a balmy 18 deg.
Didn't help,so not sure on how to explain the sound but sure resembles and electric engraver or an old time electric vibrating football game.

Well I tried again and this time wedged a thicker piece of rubber between the lines and zip tied together, so far good.

Hey everyone, I've been pretty frustrated with the rattling behind my dash. Yesterday, I had some free time, so I took my whole dash apart, took the radio out, took off the center console, the works.

I took pieces out part by part, and then installed fixes one by one. Each time I put a "fix" in, I drove around the block to see if the rattling was still there.

After many hours diagnosing, I got very familiar with the sound. In my opinion and in specifically for my Jeep, it was not metal, it was definitely plastic rattling. It didn't sound "tinny" like a pop can, it sounded like it was already partially damped, like only plastic sounds. After all, I tried the aluminum heating duct fix and it offered no reduction in rattle.

I removed the console to see if I could get to the shifter cable, but it wouldnt have mattered because with the whole dash apart, I could tell the rattle was coming from within the dash.

So after so many hours, I got fed up and decided to put it all back together. The very last thing I did was wedge a section of heater hose behind the highlighted plastic part labeled "the culprit".

Wouldn't ya know, on my test drive, I enjoyed rattle free operation throughout my entire range of acceleration.

I wouldn't wish this rattle on my worst enemy, but then again, my worst enemy probably wouldnt drive a Jeep!
