2012 Wrangler Oil Change - Brand Reccomendations

Gents -

I'm on my way to the 500 mile mark, and will be planning a oil change shortly after...Being that this is my first wrangler, I'm wondering what is the consensus on the best brand of oil to put in?

I'll probably go synthetic after around my 3rd change (5k miles)...But what is the go-to conventional oil brand that the experts (you guys, certainly not me) like for the 2012. I was planning on sticking with 5W-30.

Thanks in advance.

yes stick with the 5w-30... always go with what on the cap... see pic below..
The brand at this point does not matter since you are going dump it out soon... two times before you go with synthetic. I was going for Castrol, but was not available at the time so I just went with Valvoline premium.

I believe they run synthetic from the factory - in which case I don't know why one would switch to non-synthetic. Modern engines do well on synthetic; it's good that you're changing early. I would just stick with the factory stuff.

So this would lead to my next question for the peanut gallery...

What is the factory oil used upon delivery? If it is indeed synthetic then I'd agree there is no reason to move backwards (other than cost).

Jeep is not one of the mfgs that uses Synthetic oil as a factory fill in the Wrangler. Having said that you can switch as soon as the first oil change to synthetic oil if you'd like. I'm a believer in changing the factory fill early, especially in an engine like the 3.6. It has no freeze out plugs, and cleaning the sand and debris out from manufacturing it is difficult. I'd consider changing the oil at 500 miles, 1,500 miles, possibly again at 3,000 miles. That depends if I saw any junk in the filter or not at 1,500 miles. Then at my next oil change make the change to synthetic oil. For the short break in intervals there really is no need for a synthetic oil since it costs more and won't be in the engine that long. This is JMO, some people see it as a waste, but a looking at filters I've opened up from new engines I see value in dumping the oil early.......

Stupid question, but how much oil does the 2012 take? and anyone have a filter part number? I'm at about 1200 miles and should probably change it.

My filter part number is 68079744-AB from my invoice on my oil change.

I just noticed they put 5W20 in it, or at least that's what the invoice says.

They had the wrong weight in my first 07 jk back in 06 too, not sure if they really put the wrong stuff in, or if their system didn't have the option yet.

That's what I got. Autozone had the filters for a the 2011 3.6 grand Cherokees. It looks the same and it fit.

That engine calls for 5W30. Since most newer Chrysler products call for 5W20 the dealer probably has a lot of bulk oil 5W20 and took the cheap easy way out. I'll hide because there are some people who love their dealers and they do no wrong. If I were you I'd bring it back and make them change it over to 5W30, and watch and be sure they are putting 5W30 in it. Chrylser spec'd 5W30 for a reason, if they felt 5W20 was better for that application they could have spec'd 5W20. Will 5W20 hurt it for one OCI? NO, but if you continue to have the dealer service the vehicle with 5W20 you could have problems later on. Yea I know all about the warranty, the dealer doing the work, etc. It is not worth the hassle of going through all that BS. Use the correct oil, that's all I'm saying. This is a classic example of why I try and stay very far from the dealer after I buy a vehicle. JMO

Stopped by and asked about it. Tech wrote 5-30 on their ticket but it got logged as 5-20 in the system.

Autozone didn't have the listing for the 2012 yet. Did show for the 2011 GC, but had to order it. Had two options, the $8 and the $34. I was going to spring for the $34 but decided to stop by a dealership and avoid the wait. The genuine Mopar was $8 and the parts folks were quite pleasant. (unlike when I buy parts from the Land Rover dealership).

I changed my oil at 1176 miles. Those filters are surprisingly small. I did open up the element and there were plenty of machining bits that I was glad to have removed. Not so much of the pasty metal that I sometimes see on a breaking in engine. I have never opened a filter on a factory-built engine of this low a mileage but I have on at least 25 freshly rebuilt or new race engines (those would have been around 500 miles). Seemed like the jeep filter was pretty clean overall with a few more of the larger filings than I might have expected, but you had to look pretty close to see them. Was it critical to the engine's life below 100,000? Not likely in the least. Will it help to have changed the oil this early? I certainly think so. Will I sleep better? Absolutely.

Incidentally, I used non-synthetic in case I am still breaking in.

Regards,
Rod
