2012 Wrangler - Urban Survival Vehicle???

Apologies in advance to those that use the Wrangler as originally intended.

However, I'm fed up with my vehicles getting dented, scratched and abused by zombie drivers; however, I don't want to let them win and force me to drive a beater. When I go through my urban survival checklist, the 2012 Wrangler seems to nail everything except the fuel efficiency but the fact that its a convertible more than compensates for that.

I was originally thinking a Sahara Unlimited but my immediate concern would be swinging car and suv doors would mess up the fenders. Will the unpainted Rubicon fenders survive those unscathed? Does the Rubicon ride high enough that swinging doors would hit the side steps? Any other things I need to consider to survive the urban jungle?

The rubicon comes with slidders not steps.

But yes, the sport/rubi fenders hold up better, and a good set of aftermarket rock rails will keep your doors safe. You could add the sahara side steps, but you'll be better off aftermarket.

You want a sport, not a rubi.

Thanks for the info. I discounted the Sport because I want the leather interior and I don't believe that's available on that model.

It'll save you money to add leather aftermarket through katskinz.

You're going to buy a lot of offroad gear stock with the rubi you won't be using.

You can go aftermarket for leather seats, as well as seat warmers and all that. Maybe getting the Sport, adding up ONLY the options you would want to add, even aftermarket and installation, could be cheaper than the Rubicon. Rubicon could have them, but you may also be spending money on a lot of other features you wouldn't use either.

The popular leather seat aftermarket seems to be Car Leather Upholstery | Custom Auto Leather Interiors by Katzkin around here.

I can attest to the rock rail keeping people off you... I have the Smitty... I mean Shittybuilt sidestep/rockrails on my 2010 2dr and there is a toyota out there (likely fixed by now) that should have a "Body By JEEP" sticker on it.... when he decided to run into the side of the jeep changing lanes without looking.... ZERO damage to the jeep... Decimated the front corner of the camery the hood etc.... He was so pissed when I stopped he was yelling at me like it was my fault... Exclaiming that heavy duty parts shouldn't be allowed on cars....
Anyway that is the main reason I am going to keep buying Wranglers till I die, they laugh at other vehicles and their fragile body work....

What are urban survival requirements?

Wranglers are meant to get scratched up, it's a badge of honor, but normally the scratches come from nature, not other vehicles although I have 2 nice dents in my rear tow point thanks to other drivers, but I'm sure their cars were much worse off then the minor dents on the hook of the jeep If you really want to not worry, just armour the jeep with steel bumpers, rock sliders with steel rails, steel fenders, and steel corners, anyone that bumps you will take all the damage

Sf_Kilo, great story about the Toyota! I once scared the bejesus out of a Forerunner owner who tried to stop me from merging when I was driving a Defender 90.

Steel sidesteps/sliders are a priority purchase and will also help the kids climb up.

Very interesting thread for me, as I'm buying my Wrangler principally for this reason (other than the fact that I really, really, freaken wanted one).

Most of my driving is done in New York City, usually in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and the commute between the two.

As you can imagine, New York City destroys cars. Well I mean besides the obvious worry about theft/vandalism, the stop and go traffic, rubicon trail besting potholes, generally abysmal road conditions, infuriated drivers, and incredibly dated network of roads and highways, it's not that bad:

Having driven in these conditions for many years you would think I would have just given up and gotten a beater. But being a lover of all things motivated by internal combustion, preferably by a lot of it and with a manual transmission, I always refused to allow the city to ruin cars for me.

So Manhattan daily drivers have included:

(2) Mazda RX-8's (04, and '10)
Volkswagen GTI
Subaru Impreza WRX STi
(2) Smart Fortwo's
and most recently my 2008 Lotus Elise S/C 220
and a smattering of other vehicles from time to time.

I've been pretty lucky with them, (knocking on wood), but the bump method of parallel parking (the Lotus only lives in Garages, which in New York can cost more than the car itself per month), combined with the road conditions got me thinking....

What would give me the same connection to the car that I crave, what would make me smile, what would be fun to be in, etc. while allowing me to laugh in the face of the trials and tribulations of urban driving with reckless aplomb?

There were many thoughts, but the Wrangler was the only one that kept checking all the boxes. In my view, it is one of the best, if not the best, city car you could possibly buy. Jeeps are amazing in all conditions, but most importantly, they're fun in them as well.

The Wrangler will allow me keep on motoring through the city, while at night resting easy knowing that the person who inevitably bumped me earlier that day while I was parallel parked getting Coffee may very well have an inidcator of the event on his car, but not on mine!

Sorry for the novel length response, your post just hit the nail on the head and very precisely conveyed what was my thought process on getting the Wrangler.

The Wrangler also serves to enhance my experience of driving in the city because it means my other cars no longer have to withstand the abuse, and I can enjoy them on road trips, on the track, or when traffic is light, without having to worry so much. Previously I had been using the Smart car daily, while only occasionally taking the Lotus to work or using it to get around the city during the day. Now the second Smart is gone, and I'm eagerly awaiting having far more fun in my Dozer Sahara 2 door stick shift when it finally gets here!

Oh and as for the fenders, my thoughts are: Get what you want. I wanted leather and I liked the painted fender look but I felt I had no need for the Rubicon model, even though I like to tell myself I might do some light offroading (my ideal vacation involves taking up temporary residence in a building ensconsed with five stars, near a beach, where English is not spoken, and I have rented a convertible that makes nice noises with which to drive on the incredible roads that are undoubtdly near) and maybe take a trip up state or perhaps locate a beginner trail; nothing that would necessitate the capabilities of the Ruby model. My perspective: With the money you saved by not going with the Ruby to get the same equipment (it sounds like you fancy all the toys as I do), you can get your painted fenders touched up every year or two. And besides, it's a Wrangler, it needs a scratch or a nik so our urban Wranglers don't get made fun of by other Jeeps who get taken off road!

No offense, but it makes me nuts when people think they need a Rubicon for off road. Most people have no concept of the type of conditions that would require a Rubicon.

Rotate, it definitely sounds like we're definitely thinking the same way.

I'm now back to my original choice of a black Sahara Unlimited although I'm still torn on auto vs. manual. I plan on ordering the ACE rock sliders as they seem to be ideal for my needs and plan to pair them up with some new/used Rubi rails as they seem to look great together. Eventually, I'm thinking I'll switch out the bumpers.

Tough rock rails are the way to go, with these, I feel alot safer driving around with the doors off. As soon as a lift it a few inches and put on some 35s, no more door dings from zombies.

One of the best benefits to owning a Wrangler! I actually went around mine with a shopping cart, no part of the paint gets touched. Bumpers, side steps and unpainted fenders.

I still park further away, I hate having some idiot glue there car next to mine in a parking area.

go manual. an automatic just doesn't feel right in a jeep. though for an urban vehicle, the sahara unlimited is a good choice.

Ok ok I am a TJ owner but this thread really embodies the thought that JK drivers are yuppies and grocery getters. Guys and ladies it's a jeep! Of course it will survive, these rigs are the best off road trucks built in the US. Trail rated means they have had them tested on the rubicon trail. So get off the streets,parking lots,highways and go jeeping not motoring it's not a mini Cooper! Oh yea one more thing Learn the Jeep WAVE!!!

Dagoo66, I've braced myself for the first time something I've written inevitably gets quoted and commented on by you. It feels like a diluted version of getting pulled over by the state trooper sheriff.

I, respectfully, think you misinterpreted my insinuations with that statement. My point was the normal Wrangler is so capable off road, that even if I decided to give it a go sans pavement, there was no way given my intentions of use that I would ever be able to or need to exploit the capabilities of the rubicon model.

Therefore, in my mind, even if I went off roading, there was no way I was going to do something that any normal wrangler couldnt easily handle (a glorified dirt road is about my speed) therefore reinforcing your idea that I indeed have no idea what kinds of conditioned necessitate or would be made easier by the ruby model, but I know I have no intentions of encountering them!

1. As a JK owner and a Mini Cooper S owner I'm not sure I like the implied tone of that statement....
So here is mine, people who put down the newer jeeps likely aren't financially equipped to buy one thus feel the need to imply superiority in someway....

2. If I wanted to strictly play in the woods I would take $40k and build a crawler to dick around with in the woods.... However I need something that will safely, legally, and comfortably traverse fields, roads, snow, ice, zombies, noob drivers, Etc. equally and without damage to my vehicle...
With that said your TJ is out of the question I test drove a 2005 and the ride and steering response was crap comparatively to the 2010 JK I purchased...

3. I'm no yuppie... I wear t-shirts, shorts/jeans, and boots everyday to work and have no issue climbing under the jeep and changing my own oil or anything else that arises...

AND the most important part!!! I Wave and get more waves in return from the newer jeeps.... most of the older ones are truly grocery getters....

sorry got bored your a jeep owner you can take a poke or two

But yea Jeeps are the best for urban survival

I think he meant between buying a Sahara instead of an X just to get the leather option.

Buying an X + Katskinz's = cheaper than a Sahara + leather

X2 on the Mini Cooper. We do like to get great gas mileage at times and I can say that we really love that Mini. On the other hand, After having an 89 YJ forever we decided to add an 06 TJ then couldn't resist trading that in on a 10 Rubi. Did we really need a Rubi, no. Did we want a Rubi, yes. Now, a friend wants to sell his 04 TJ with 46,000. Do I need another Wrangler, no. Will I buy his, yes. I might as well have one of each. They all happen to be red, red and flame red. I guess I'm working on the cycle. Must just be addicted to these things I guess. And, I'm with you on #2.

3. I'm no yuppie... I wear t-shirts, shorts/jeans, and boots everyday to work and have no issue climbing under the jeep and changing my own oil or anything else that arises...

AND the most important part!!! I Wave and get more waves in return from the newer jeeps.... most of the older ones are truly grocery getters....

sorry got bored your a jeep owner you can take a poke or two

But yea Jeeps are the best for urban survival
1. Ok so I have a TJ but to say I am not "financially equipped " to buy a JK is well

2. I love the "real" ride of a TJ,YJ or CJ

3. My TJ has a 172k miles on it, I would drop the eng and tranny replace with a new one before I would ever drive a JK.

4.MINI's are great and very cool looking. but to put both of these cars in the same category???? UGH!

5. Enjoy your " USV" but please dont become another Hummer driver..I think if you guys would take the time off of work, go to a jeep jamboree. you would really enjoy it and learn that these Jeeps are an American Icon that helped us win WW2 (I am A vet) There is a ton of History in Jeeps and I think that Willys,CJ,YJ and TJ drivers just understand it more.
