I don't know how much your head unit weighs, but I don't really see how it would move very far. My double DIN JVC doesn't have anywhere to go - it sits on the vent tubes below and has the dash above holding it in place, not to mention the screws on the dash kit holding it steady. Cutting the bracket seems to be a bit of a waste of effort, TBH.
