Hey SilverSport... I just noticed you are in Colorado. Which dealership are you using?

I wish this thread was around this past November when I bought my '13 Manual. The entire month of December saw it in the shop with them probably putting on close to 500 miles trying to figure out the noise. The dealership even put amplifiers on the stick and transmission to figure it out...no dice.

The rattling is still there though I learned to unhappily adjust to hearing it. I still have a big smile on my face when I get in and drive. My clutch pedal just started creaking as I engage and disengage, and the dealership manager said it's a bearing. But we're one step closer to getting Chrysler to replace the entire tranny under the 70% rule. $30k spent to have the truck in the shop for 2 months out of the 6 months of ownership. Ugh. Good luck to all of you! Hopefully your dealerships fight for you.

Perkins Motors. The shop foreman's first name is Jess.

Thanks! May have to give them a call and make a trip to the springs to have them look at it. Though at 15k miles on my `12, it seems the 3rd and 4th gear noise has diminished some. Or maybe I'm more used to it.

Well got the JKR back today and the new isolator-transmission mount part did not solve the 3rd and 4th rattling. I kept getting the line all day "Some noise is normal." to which I replied but this isn't or it would be doing this through out all gears.

My invoice says the following:

Quote:
Per STAR center replace transmission mount for grinding noise.
(Advised customer some noise is normal per Chrysler)
I don't know how they came to this conclusion after installing and driving the JKR:

Quote:
Perform inspection and install new transmission mount per Chrysler case #461597 Install new mount and test drove. Jeep is shifting and running to factory specs OK to be delivered.
I was hearing the noise within 100 yards of leaving the dealership. It was closing time so I didn't u-turn and have another discussion about it. This is rather disappointing and I don't like being "that guy" but I'm going to get what I paid for as it didn't do this on the test drive back in January or I would have got my first auto as this is loud enough to be annoying. Even passengers are a little concerned when they hear it for the first time.

Any reasonable suggestions so I can move forward?

SilverSport I believe you got yours fixed when they replaced the countershaft? Are you still rattle free in 3rd and 4th?

I didn't think that would work. Especially since your redesigned mount had the same part number as the original dating back to 07. So far, no one has been successful in fixing the noise on this forum, other than SilverSport. Entire transmission replacements have not corrected the issue. I've had everything but the gears and synchros replaced and it hasn't fixed it.

All I've got out of the repairs is 1+ months without the Jeep, a twice ripped out transmission, new rattle, and a creaking clutch. I really suggest you bring these issues up with the dealer, but make sure that you have direct contact with Chrysler customer support and the Chrysler engineers. I think someone needs to be held accountable and it shouldn't be the dealer.

Hey thanks for the suggestions Blastek. I don't hold them accountable in the sense that it's their fault the transmission is doing this, after all they didn't design it. But I know they're hearing what I'm hearing and just towing the Chrysler line.

I've never dealt directly with a car manufacturer so I'm unsure how to move forward. I guess I can call up my service rep and let them know it's still happening and ask for their suggestion.

I understand manuals make noise. I've only driven manuals since I learned how to drive back in 1986 and my '67 VW Bug's manual was quieter than this! It's so nice in 1,2 5 and 6 for the most part but 3rd is loud and 4th is obnoxious! Neutral is rattling too about the same as 3rd.

Well if all they did was just ship in a new factory assembled pre-built transmission and swapped it out I would expect that as I haven't heard of any changes to the 6-speed because of this complaint. What would be best is if they tore it down and replaced individual parts paying attention to tolerances, etc.

They tried to rebuild it twice with parts Chrysler sent but they were getting parts that were rusted and pitted. These were new pieces according to Chrysler but looked as bad as the parts that were being replaced. There were also parts with worse tolerances.

2013 JK 23R
Only 378 miles
No rattle. The 5-6 throw took about 15 minutes to get used to though :-)
I'll update if the rattle shows up with some miles.

Update

Got mine back from the dealership yesterday. It seems that the rattle when the car is warm and at idle is gone, however I am extremely apprehensive. It shifts awesome though, they replaced the clutch so everything seems to grab alot tighter.

The vibration at highway speeds is still there but about half as bad as it was before. I'm gonna give it a week and make my decision. If I hear a peep or the vibration gets any worse, its going right back.

I will say that since getting chrystler involved things have gone much smoother with the dealership. I got daily progress updates and a rental car (a clown car, but a car to drive). Fingers Crossed! I will post a photo of the invoice in the hopes that the info helps.

How did you go about getting Chrysler involved? I'm getting the feeling I need to start heading down that road...

My rattle has disappeared now that spring is here. I'll wait to see if it comes back before I bring it into the dealer.

I now have Chrysler involved because they say it's normal and the dealer and I both agree it is definitely fubar. I'm awaiting a call back to see what the resolution is. 2 rebuilds and a new tranny within a few hundred miles is ridiculous. I'll keep everyone posted when I hear from them.

I will hear the rattle intermittently, usually in 3rd or 4th but am not worried about it. If it's really a problem, it will get worse and something will break making diagnosis and repair a no brainer. Experience has taught me many times that asking dealers to diagnose things before the cause is readily apparent only results in frustration and more problems from all of the exploratory surgery.

FWIW at least the dealer agrees there is a problem.

^So Chrysler originally authorized repairs plus a new transmission and then decided the rattle is normal?

there just seems to be a lack of consistency on Chrysler's part. A quick search of their own database would show all the similar problems customers are having and all the solutions that haven't worked.

I don't know if the STAR system is much like an IT ticketing system but there's got to be a way to search it and see all the similar issues.

SilverSport yeah they originally said it was not working or sounding like it is supposed to be. Then tried to rebuild it twice and when that didn't work they authorized a new transmission. Now they are telling me and the dealer that these noises are normal after saying originally it's not. I went from having one noise to having the same noise plus two additional ones. I have all three problematic noises that are on the forum. Neutral rattle, knocking under load when accelerating, and this audible whirring when driving coming from the transmission area that sounds like white noise that gets louder as you accelerate. It took a few thousand miles for them to fix it, I have 150 on the new one and its worse. FWIW I was told by someone that works in Chrysler that the replacement parts being used were all stored in warehouses that were flooded from hurricane sandy. After seeing the parts that were sent as replacement's for my rebuild with the rust and pitting, I agree.
