Well I was getting pretty concerned reading all these posts online about the rattle and noises from the trans. In my search I found one post mentioning the inner shifter boot being loose and letting in excess noise, I figured what the hell.

Got in the jeep and lifted the center console, sure enough the inner boot was completely disconnected and wobbling around. This also would explain the rattle I got in the console when I hit bumps too. I was able to press the boot back in and took a drive, it was like night and day. The lower tone noise at 2000 rpm is still there but greatly reduced and I don't think I would have ever picked up on it, the high pitch noises are gone.

The excessive noise that the boot lets in when not connected is crazy. While driving all my noises came back so I pulled over and took a look, sure enough it had popped back out. Headed to dealer Wednesday. Hopefully they can get a new one on for my 4th of July travels. The noises never made me feel like there was an issue but they always seemed too loud, especially when it seemed louder than my old TJ. Hope this "fix" works.

Good tip. How do we lift the center console to check? Was it easy to do? Thanks.

This is my first jk, a 2013, not sure if its the same on other years but the trim/consol just pops up.

Easiest way is to sit in drivers seat and reach Down on either Side of the shifter to where the plastic trim meets the carpet. Pull out toward the doors slightly while pulling up. Pretty easy and shouldn't take much force. To see it bit better you will need to shift into 4wd or put the 4wd into neutral. You could also remove the knobs and take the whole thing off. I'm leaving that to the dealer because you can clearly see the inner boot from the passenger side once you pop it up.

Went to the dealer up here in Lockport NY, the one guy at service desk was a real jerk about me buying the car out if state. Even said something to the effect that "their dealership has more vested in making you happy because you bought it there" If I did by need a nys inspection I would have walked out of there that moment.

The didnt fix a thing this time and said they could hear anything. Didn't even fix the boot when I showed em it was loose. They said they "repositioned it". I ended up messing with it a bit in the lot at work afterwards and think its snapped in good/better now. Took it for a ride and it made a huge difference. Hope it stays put, if it doesn't I won't be going back to that dealership again..for anything.

Now, I only have 50 miles on my 2013 JKU - however - I have no rattles coming from the transmission area at all.

My 2012 went into the shop yesterday for a new shifter assembly. While in the tech heard the rattle and checked the throw-out assembly (I think that is what he called it). They called me to ask if they could keep it over night to make that repair as well. I, of course, agreed. I pick it up today. I'll update later.

The repairs made a huge difference in how my Wrangler sounds, shifts and drives. It used to sound like a diesel, now it is so quiet I hardly hear the RPMs come up. While I still find the clutch gas timing the worst of any vehicle I have ever owned, it at least slides through the gates better. The rattles are gone, the whine is gone. Do I suffer from the placebo effect???

I'm up to 500 miles and still no rattles, so I'm assuming this is a defect that can be fixed for those that do have rattle. The stick shakes like an excited dogs tail over bumps though lol

My GF's '12 JK sport's 6 speed shimmies like mad all the time! She says it has done it since day 1 brand new... I find it odd when I drive it. I love my '13 5 speed auto/tiptronic BTW!

The issue I have is an intermittent noise, rattle or vibration from the base of the gear shifter usually between 1,800-3000 R.P.M. It seems very much tied to the outside temperature as well. The noise usually only manifests itself on days where the air temperature if greater than 85-90 degrees F.

The dealer has tried to re-torque some things but yet the problem persists. What the dealership did try to do they did not do of their own accord. Everything they tried can from the manufacturer. My daughter and I finally documented the problem and uploaded it to you tube. Please listen to the noise and let us know if you have this problem and were you or the dealership able to eliminate the problem.

Sounds like the same noise i get. I believe its coming from the transfer case shifter. If I hold the transfer case shifter or move it over slightly, the noise stops for me. I dont know the solution to this problem. Haven't brought it back to the dealer to look at yet.

Update: have almost 13,000 km now and the noise hasn't gotten any worse or more frequent. Definitely not bad enough to have the dealer poke and prod it. All things considered, seems like NSG370 business as usual haha.

yup, same issue here as well.

The dealer told my I shift at too low of an rpm... also told me that the noise I hear in my door (a rattle) is because I drive to fast. Retards at Marino Jeep in Chicago, don't go there!

Hi, my 2013 MOAB was rattling, and getting worse. Brought it in, and they replaced the shifter. Seemed better for a week, then returned.

The dealer just replaced the tranny, more or less. Seems ok for now, but need to put some miles on it.

Hope this is solved. This is my dream Jeep. Been saving literally for 3 years to get it!

Tab, just saw your video, same prob with mine. Happens in all gears even under mild acceleration.

Regarding the post of the dealer who said you drive too hard, that is crazy. They should be reported. To whom, I don't know.

My dealer was good enough to agree to the problem (it's obvious). Hope the repair holds.

I have had a few posts over the past few months related to a noise I was hearing in my 2013 Jeep Rubicon. The posts I started were entitled…

• “2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Noise”
• “2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Noise rev2”
• “2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Transmission (A Plea for Help!!!!!)”

There was definitely a noise for sure but it was NOT the transmission!!!
If your Jeep is making this noise then I know the problem for sure…

I did not figure it out. It was only through the forums that someone (user “kta2402”) had the right answer.
There is a cable that connects the transfer case shifter knob to the transfer case. The cable is very similar to a bicycle cable. There is a hard outer sheath with an inner cable that actually moves (extends or retracts) relative to the outer sheath.
This hard outer sheath has upward pressure on the underside of the center console. Under certain conditions this cable “rattles” like craze. See image below (I stole this image from user “kta2402”…)

While you are I there check the wiring harness as well. I recommend wrapping both with something soft. Once you do there is no more noise. eric_dodson is offline

so my 2012 6speed rubicon has the issue with it sounding like a crd with the clutch out when warm. also if i flip the ac on it gets really loud.. today i noticed it leaking fluid out of the bell housing so into the dealer it goes again... also i took it in before for the "crd" sounding issue and they said it was normal and wouldent do anything even had the shop foreman look at it and HEAR the noise but did nothing i also have video of it on my phone. which really pissed me off since its not normal. Can people start posting what dealer they visit and city and state so that people can find out which is the best to go to or have some knowlage of this since mine is clueless.

The noise and leaking from the Bell housing sound like a Bad Slave/throw bearing Assembly.

I have a rattle in a certain RPM range but it's nothing compared to my dad's TJ.

Anyone else's TBO sound like a rock polisher with the clutch let out?

Just following up on this - I now have 4,000 miles on the JKU and the transmission is VERY noisy - going to pop the center console trim tomorrow and see if it's a loose boot.

Does anyone elses have a metallic ringing-esque noise when driving in third / fourth at around 1,500 -> 3,000 RPM?
My dad says this is common when you are lugging it - but it seems to happen anywhere within the "green" area on the rev range - even on the highway in 6th on cruise control. Worst in 4th gear along the whole bottom end.

Replaced my exhaust, and my 4th gear low rpm rattle went away. No clue how/why, but I'm not arguing with the results...

Could be an exhaust leak. Highly doubt it but it could be. Mine does it as well and i do have a catback. I think its really just a noisy drivetrain that makes even more noise under load.

The heat shield above the muffler will give off a tinny rattle at times. Not sure of a correction as it seems to be held on with two bolts and mine are tight. Bugs me. My 6-spd can be noisy in different gears but I take in to consideration two points; it is a German trans and probaby is not completly designed to have a 12+ inch gear lever sticking out of it (most German shifters are short, stubby, and heavy duty), and second, it is a Jeep thingy. Less sound insulation and sound deadening material and sounds get amplified. Just drive with your hand on the shifter, and many vibrations and noises go away.

Update: Well after I had to reseat my inner shift boot myself the noise or rattle was muffled for a few hundred miles but has gotten increasingly worse. A kind of gear clash/ super loud ratcheting sound can be heard when te trans is warm in 3-5 for the first few seconds as well as a softer ratchet noise that goes away with pressure on the shifter. Took it to a new dealer here in wny, they had me bring it in twice and they are ordering me a new trans. They said "it has some bearing issues". Not going to argue. Hopefully it fixes it.
