Exclamation 2013 Sport temp loss of power

HELP! Quick back ground info is, 2013 Sport, onwed for 2.5 months now and has 1123 miles with a manual trans, 3.73 gears, 16" rims and 33" duratracs, Banks CAI

I was driving home from Oberkail, Germany (I live in Ramstein 78 mile trip) and my jeep felt very luggish. I pasted it off as it's still cold (it was 20degrees F) for the first 45 miles of my trip I had no power, running 65mph I had to down shift to keep speed no matter the hill size and I was getting 13mpg. I normally get 19-21 no matter how I drive (under 100mph of course, after that all bets are off). I pulled off into a rest station to look everything over. There was nothing a miss under the hood and everything sounded ok. When I left the rest area, everything was running normal and I had all my power back. I didn't shut off the engine and my gas milage was back up to the lower 20's.

Anyone, anything? It's the craziest thing. I even took my tempature and make sure I wasn't that hung over that I shouldn't have been driving....

Did you leave the E-brake on, then released it after the rest stop?

That's what it felt like but know. I checked that right off when I saw the crazy low gasmilage and had no power... My first thought was I was losing my mind but... I don't know

maybe the cai was messing up the computer causing it to run extremely rich for some reason.

My thoughts too. CAI usually requires a tune or else it will lead to A/F issues.

If it's the e-brake the lugs would be hot enough to light a smoke. I am thinking it is leaning out because of the CAI.

I vote CAI as well. I just installed the airaid and have never felt a loss of power until two days ago. It was more like a skipped beat than constant though.

I'm not going to argue that it might be my CAI, but if it was why did the stop at the rest area and 5 minutes of idealing seem to fix the issue and restore my gas milage?

I can't find anything on CAIs leaning out the A/F to much, I know on my 2012 Wrangler I did get a CEL that was for the A/F being to lean, but it was just once and during some rough offroading at full throttle too...

Anyone think my ECU only have 45miles on it when I added the CAI might be the cause? Maybe it didn't have enough run time to learn the proper mapping and what not, I don't know. Guide me Jeep gods, for I am truely lost on this one.....

check to see if it threw any trouble codes. I am still saying your ecm was confused by the cai and went into an extremely rich mode to compensate for the free flow of air it was seeing. your ecm is going to want to maintain 14.7 afr or whatever it needs to be set by the factory and all of the sudden it thinks it is going leaner so it calls for more fuel.

I dont have any codes, didn't have then either. It's completely weird. The only thing that changed was I had no power and my MPG sunk like a brick. The E-Brake idea was spot on but I checked the wheels and they were still packed with snow and not even warm.

the big thing that really throws me off is the CAI has been on there since I have owned the Jeep. It was it's first trip out in sub-freezing temps and snowing but, man I just don't know. I hate being afraid to drive my beloved Jeep but I really do worry about starting it up and now normally don't even turn on the radio for fear that I will miss a sound thats out of place....

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but my 2012 that I bought in May of this year was doing something really similar for awhile. Every so often it felt like I had downshifted, or the ebrake had been put on. RPM's didn't change or anything, I just had a really sudden momentary loss of power. It was a really intermittent problem and I could never seem to replicate it for the dealer. And they ran her through her paces a few times.

Right around the 3000 mile mark, the problem just went away. It hasn't done it again for a few months now, and weather wasn't an issue b/c it has only recently gotten cool here. It was really weird and had me periodically wondering if I'd bought a lemon. But when I hit around 3000 miles, not only did the problem just leave and never come back, but she is running even better than she was when I bought her. Hubby even commented on it the other day about how it seems like Ivy just found her stride and is running like a top. I have absolutely no explanation for it b/c yes it's weird.

This brings a little comfort. I'm at 1270 miles now. I hope my problem just leaves too soon! It freaks me out to think that I could be left on the side of the German road by a symbol of American auto know how. It's not like anyone will over look a lifted Dozer over here. The cars are so small... lol.

Thank you for your experience with this and confirming that I am not completely bat-@!?@ crazy yet

It would appear the 3.6L might be hiding a few gremlins

Maybe ice in the gas lines blocking fuel flow. You don't see that very often in the USA anymore because of the ethanol content here but I don't know if they do that in Europe. Stopping with a warm motor could have thawed the ice.

All this is totally gueswork on my part.

I will take guess work, that's all I have to go on right now. I'm not sure about the ethanol, I buy gas on base but it is european gas. I will look into that one

Entirely possible. I follow any thread I see on the subject. There's been a few of us and to my knowledge no one has solved the mystery yet. But then so far I've also only seen a fear of being stranded. Unless I've missed one no one had actually been stranded over it yet.

And I'm pretty sure the gas AAFES gets in Germany has a similar ethanol content. It did at Mildenhall in England anyway. I haven't been to Germany in years though so I don't know for sure.

This^^^ Sounds like an ECM issue to me too . Intermittent bad reading from a sensor maybe.
