Should I bring in a cashiers check from my bank for close to the full amount and then write a check for the balance?

I've heard some people say that they dealer forced them to fill out a credit application even when they said they were paying in cash. This makes no sense to me.

So far I haven't discussed payment with the person I'm talking to, but I'm guessing he is assuming I'll be financing it through them and won't be surprised if they aren't cooperative when I say I'm paying in cash.
You didn't ask me, you asked Pat, but if I were paying cash, i would negotiate the deal, getting it in writing. Then i would go to the bank and get a cashiers check in the EXACT amount, PAYABLE TO MYSELF!. That way if the dealer screws with you, the check is not payable to them and it's easy to recover your money. You just sign the check over if things go as planned. This is SOP for real estate transactions where things sometimes fall apart at the last minute.

The dealer can't "force" you to do a credit app. That's BS and I would run from any dealer that tried. Remember, you have the money. Therefore you have the advantage until, such time as you give them the money.

I just figured I'd ask Pat directly since he probably has plenty of direct experience with these things, but anyone that has paid cash for their Jeep has something to share I'd be interested in hearing since not all dealers are the same.

I do have an email with an "out the door" price including sales tax, doc fees and destination charges. The guy just added on the dealer installed car security tracking option on top of that, which I asked him to remove since I didn't want it.

MSRP on the window sticker includes $995 destination fee. So going by MSRP from Jeep, it includes the destination. But holdback is calculated on MSRP minus the destination fee. So holdback is .03*(MSRP - $995)

With the interest rates so low, have you considered putting the money into a mutual fund and get an 8-10% avg return? You surely would cover the 2% rates of interest.

I told him I didn't want it installed or wanted it removed if it had already been installed. I'm just wondering if that was his ace in the hole to get back some profit. Anyone heard of that particular add-on charge before?
If you're dealing with Allen Samuels run like hell! They put them on all their Jeeps and even the sales manager says they're worthless.

Assuming you are talking about purchasing and taking immediate delivery of the vehicle and not a deposit on ordering or future delivery, it's simple, ask the dealer how they want to be paid. I have paid by personal check, bank check, hundred dollar bills and combinations of all.

NO credit apps. on a cash deal, that's absurd.

Of course they want you to finance through the dealership. They get a piece of it.

On a side note, make friends with your car dealer. As I get older, it's easier and more fun to call someone I know when I want a new vehicle. You really don't want to buy a car at Walmart or Cost Co., do you?

Correct. My. Point is some people grab the mSRP off jeep.com build and price. That doesn't reflect MSRP with destination.

I'll be doing the same myself, when doing a cash offer the ball is usually in the buyers hands. dealers (no offense to our friends on here that are dealers) they usually don't like dealing with people whom can buy the car out right. because dealerships get more money when you finance due to interest and so fourth.

i don't know about everybody else on here, but im at the point in my life where vehicle payments are something i no longer want to deal with. i prefer at this point and time just to buy a car out right and have no payments to deal with later on. I know some can't do that but each is own.

In my experience, there are folks that come in to a dealership and in the back of their mind they aren't ready to commit so they don't have a cashiers check with them.
If a dealer is going to take a personal check on someone they don't know then they will most likely want to get the infamous " 5 liner" credit app. This way they can do a quick credit check and see if you are going to make good on the check or write a bad check and take off with the car.

If I know you, or you have been in a few times to talk about the vehicle and are somewhat local to me than I would take a personal check. Bottom line, most dealers feel better with a cashiers check.

As i said to each is own..... I'm 30 and homeowner so mortgage, tax, home insurance, flood insurance and all the other bills that comes with that are more then enough payments for myself.

I prefer to spend my extra money more wisely like modding my jeep when i get it

Interesting stuff....

I wrote a personal check for mine. I bet the dealer thought I was trying to pull a scam or something because of how things worked out.

I wrote the deposit out of one checkbook, and the payment check out of another.
The payment check was check number 1002....as the only other time I had used that account was to buy the Libby (check number 1001 four years prior) that I was trading in.

When I traded in my Libby, it didn't have an updated license plate sticker on it (sales guy came running over to ask me about it), I had it the sticker, but it was in the glove box....I just never drove the Libby unless it was snowing or towing. Plus, I had only put about 20 miles on it in the month it took my Wrangler to be built.

Also, when I went to pick the Wrangler up....I had actually forgotten my checkbook...which was kinda funny. The wife had to bring it to me. Not to mention that there are not a lot of brothers writing personal checks for new Jeeps in Plano Illinois.

I say I think they thought I was trying to scam them because at the last minute, the decided to NOT do the electronic title transfer (fine by me, saved me $25), and they seem to take an extra long time (like and extra 3 weeks) to submit the title paperwork.

I wonder if they were waiting on $25,500 check out of a barely used account to clear? I was never asked any type of questions about my credit, and I wasn't financing, so it never came up.

One guy kept shadowing me until I gave him the mean-mug. I think they thought I was going to rob the place (I always kept a large back-pack with me....but the backpack had my laptop with my excel spreadsheets, and research folders). Suckers....

Couldn't find an answer to this in the thread search... are the Leather Trimmed seats the leather seat upgrade or is that different? Is the leather trip just a combos of leather and cloth or the whole seat. Got 2 kiddos under 6 and the full leather is way easier to keep clean! I'll be ordering a 2014 Rubicon ASAP once I iron out the details on my build.

Does this answer your question? I hope I grabbed the right ones.

If you want a Rubicon, and you want leather heated seats, the only option you have to pay for is the leather. 1100(979)

That's exactly why, once we do the title and registratin electronically we only have 5 or 7 business days to pay the sales tax on your behalf. It can take 3-4 days before a check gets sent thru twice to know if its a bad check.

When people ask why I need a cashiers check, I ask them to put themselves in our shoes. I don't know about all of you, but when I sold a few of my older cars myself I wouldn't take a personal check and mostly preferred cash.

FWIW, today I was at a dealer completing a sale on a 2014, and he told me that unlike "Leather Trimmed Seats $1100($979)" (which Pat has informed us is leather only on the part you sit on), the Mopar Premium Sound and Leather is supposedly fully leather. I asked him to check on this and he went out to talk to someone and came back confirming this to be the case. I believed him and splurged for it, but will only be able to tell you for sure in 6 to 8 weeks. I will try to remember to post back about it.

BTW, for the non-leather part of "Leather Trimmed Seats $1100($979)" it is vinyl - probably fairly kid proof - been there.

From what Rubiwho said the Premium Alpine comes standard on Rubicons with all head units so if you go for the Mopar premium option I guess you are paying that price just to get the full leather seats or am I reading this wrong?

Quick question, just sat down with a dealer to talk numbers on a JKU 24S and ran through the order. Even with the 130 stereo it required Sirius be added to the order to proceed. Is everyone else seeing this or is this just this dealers mark up.

Honestly I'm tired of the whole process, it was so easy getting my last JKU. Traded in TJ, got fair value and 1% under invoice so I didn't even need to haggle. This time I can get 1 to 2% under but my trade in value is ridiculous. Wish we had a Carmax around. I know what my car is worth at wholesale since we have friends in the family who do auctions.

I have parts in my dining room ready to install on a new JKU but I can't get one on order!

Shoot... I can't believe I missed this. I thought I had this covered, but now I'm not sure as I can't find it written anywhere.

I ordered my 2014 Unlimited Sahara from Pat, with connectivity and the 730N.

For some reason, I was thinking that gave me the upgraded audio (Alpine) and the power outlet in the front - like in the premium audio and leather package. Did I make a mistake, or will I have the upgraded Alpine audio and outlet?

If I made a mistake, will I be able to adjust the order (it's in D1 status now) to add the premium audio and leather package?

I'm pretty sure Sahara's & Rubi's come with the Alpine upgrade as standard.

Are rock rails an option on a JKUR? I haven't seen it anywhere other than on the Rubicon X and Freedom Edition.
