I recently got a 2016 2-door Willys wrangler with the dual top option. As you know, for shipping purposes both the soft and hard top are installed. I need to remove the hard top in order to remove the soft top. Taking the two front panels of the roof is not an issue, I've done it myself and it's straightforward and simple. Now I'm looking to see what the weight of the hard top is so I can be prepared when removing it. I've been searching for weights and people's answers have been ranging from 90 to 150 and even 200 lbs.
It's about 100 lbs, but it's not the weight that's the issue, it's the care you need to take to prevent damage. Some folks have posted vids online removing it alone but why risk it. Find a friend to assist. It's also heavier on rear than front, using care it's not an issue.
Exactly. Its awkward balance and size make it difficult. Even with 2 people I've banged up mine a little. I prefer a third as a set of guiding hands and extra eyes.
Also, decide ahead if you're going to move it with the window up or down, then tape it closed or pop it open. And have where you're going to put it ready with heavy cloth, cardboard etc.
You will need to remove the torx screws in the back and disconnect the lines for the wiper.
I have not weighed the top but would say the back piece is around 100 pounds. Not heavy per se, just unbalanced. If you can, i would just get a lift for it. You can take it off by yourself.
Thanks everyone, I do know the steps required to remove the top and know how unbalanced it is. I actually attempted to remove it a couple weeks ago but the only person available to help lift it off was my Mom and she wasn't comfortable with it. Thankfully I have someone stronger to help now The person helping me was curious of the weight. I'm glad it's not the 200 lbs I saw in another discussion! Do you guys prefer removing it with the back window up or down and taped? I can see having the window up being beneficial by giving a place to put your hand when lifting it off.
PS. If I had my own garage I'd definitely invest in a lift! Ahh, one of these days!
Yea maybe 100-125 pounds??? Prob 85% of the weight is in the back end of it. Like those tube tvs that were super lop sided. And it's wide obviously...which makes it hard to do alone. If I didn't have a garage I'd ditch my hardtop for a softtop.
I find it 100x easier to move with the back window open. Also put on some gloves as the bottom edge will dig into your hands. It's a piece of cake with two guys.
No way the back piece is 100 lbs... I would guess 70 lbs. It is awkward... definitely a 2 person job. You definitely can't do this by yourself if you are under 6'6". If you can, please post a video of your technique. Also as one person mentioned, open that rear glass for the best grip/position.
Just bought a new Mopar hardtop from 4WD. Total shipping weight for top (including wooden pallet and cardboard box) is 154 pounds. I agree the rear is unwieldy for one person, but not heavy.
That's going to depend on the person! 100lbs is definitely heavy for me! Unwieldy and heavy!
