I bought a new Rubicon when I was home last and would like to put a small 2.5-3" lift in it. I like the Rubicon wheels but was wondering about putting more rubber on them.
I see people talking abou the 285/70s and was wondering what is the biggest tire anyone has put on their stock Rubicon wheels?
Just note that if you want that width (285) but a little more height (34") you can run a 285/75-17 on the stock wheel (with spacers). Not everybody makes that size, but BFG KM2s and I think Toyos come in it. With that size you're getting a width (11.25") that's halfway between stock (10") and the common 12.5" 315s that so many people upgrade to. But still getting the 34" height that most 315/70s actually measure out to. So it is lighter and doesn't stick out of your fenders and throw as much crap on your sides as the 315, but still doesn't look lost inside your lifted wheelwell like the stock 255s.

Great summary. 305/70/17 is another option in the KM2s... This would give someone a bit more width, but I found the 285 just barely sticks out so any wider would throw more crap as you said.
Well the KO2 in the 34x10.5 is not out yet. That is one reason. I just got all of the external bits finished. Bumpers front and rear rockers and fenders so I am taking a few breaths to catch up.

Well, do you do things that would tend to need as much mud-traction as you can get? If so, seems a simple choice. If not, then the KOs are probably a great choice for you. I imagine they'll be cheaper than the KM2s, and a little quieter, although I find the KMs to be remarkably quiet for the level of grip -- hope the KM2s prove to be as well when I switch to them (if these damn KMs would ever wear down! Gotta keep a promise to myself.)
That is just it. When it rains on our property it can get pretty slippery but we have lots of gravel in the ground. I am thinking the KO2 can handle it 95% of time and provide some other benefits for the DD issues. I am also waiting because I think I can run those 34x10.5 without spacers and on my stock wheels with the flats now. If I go any wider I will need new wheels or spacers which I don't want.
:thumb: gotcha. I've had spacers and a 2.5 lift on my stock wheels for six or eight months so that's a no-brainer for me. Wasn't thinking about trying to do it without spacers. 10.5 gives you a fighting chance.
What size are those ? My only hesitation is that I hope they perform satisfactory in mud. It doesn't have to be great but at least be able to do the job.
I'd love it if somebody with actual BFG 285/75-17s sitting underneath their actual Jeep could measure the diameter. Cuz I know what my 255/75s measure currently, and would love to know what the new ones will actually net out to. But nobody who reads these threads ever seems to actually have a set.
There may be some cosmetic differences and slight differences in height and or width. However I honestly don't think that will be much performance difference between the two tires. I'm leaning heavily with the 35 x 10.5 simply because it is a simpler mod. I may be able to run this tire on stock wheels and no lift. I do have flat fenders.
