2wd and beach

I have owned a Jeep before, a 1995 Wrangler. I'm seriously considering getting another one. I want a 4 door, but my question is...I live in NC near the beach. We rarely get snow, but I would like to ride on the beach with my Jeep. Can a 2wd 4dr Jeep navigate beach sand with ease?

Ok, also want to ask another question....I've talked myself out of the 2wd, just think I wouldn't enjoy the thought of not being able to take it on the beach.

The Jeep I owned before had ongoing transmission problems (manual). Are those problems a thing of the past or is the manual transmission still kinda lacking?

what year was the other jeep? was it a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder?

Yeah, don't get a 2wd unless you absolutely must. The resale value alone not to mention really being able to feel like you own a real Jeep (no offense), should be enough to help change your mind. I don't have a handshaker, as I opted for the Auto which is actually more than capable and in some cases even preferred on trails/crawling....but I have not heard any recent complaints of transmission issues.

I am sure you will get lots of chime-ins from the stick crew shortly.

First off, weclome Heather! As for auto Vs. manual it's more about preference, I have a manual Rubi, my wife wants her own 4-dr Rubi (auto), it's up to your likes or dislikes. If you don't use a handsfree cellphone headset then autos are great for the highway phone talkers (no shifting issues). As for technical data there are pros and cons for both auto or manuals. The new JK Manual tranny's works fine with no issues other than the occasional OEM throwout bearings sometimes have a slight rattle even with the new improved clutch assembly Chrysler came up with. Then if you have an auto with 35s and stock 4:10 gears on the highway @cruising speed (70mph) the JK will toggle between the two highest gears which sucks, whereas manuals are a simple shift into 5th with the same setup. Nothing re-gearing for bigger tires doesn't cure on either transmission type. Some rock-crawlers like autos for ease of driving up steep inclines Vs. manuals have to work the clutch a little at times (Rubi's have less issues with their 4:1 rock-crawl transfer case though. In other words there are many variables. Glad to hear you want at least a 4wd JK, you'll be fine with either an auto or manual.

^^ What SASQUATCH said. I'm firmly attached to the stick but understand why some may choose auto. I think there is more control in a standard and have spoken in various threads at length about it, just view my history of posts and you will see what I mean.

I think it is a little lame to claim that an auto is preferred on trails. By whom? People who don't know how to drive standards properly? Lazy people? Or possibly disabled people who CAN'T drive a standard. That whole argument is full of pitfalls, except for the disabled. In the end it really comes down to whatever floats your boat. Main point: have a blast with whatever you choose. And I wouldn't try and sell it as a preferred method of trailing if you choose an auto tranny...too many jeepers out there with way too much experience on the stick to let that fly.

Before this thread gets derailed, I don't think Andy was implying negative of one Vs. the other. If I'm wrong feel free to correct me Andy. I mean like you (jk'n) I've read several threads on various forums going back and forth about this subject. Just my take on what I've read over the years, it seems the majority of hardcore constant rock-crawlers simply prefer the auto. I've had 2 TJs, 1 TJ Rubi and now a JK Rubi, all manuals and will say it's tougher than an auto, but coming from a 3-pedal 1/4 mi. racing background I overcame the challenge and enjoy it. Just to give you an example, my wife is neither lazy nor disabled and is really anxious to start learning how to crawl, I'm ecstatic about this, but hard as I've tried she's really not comfortable crawling in a manual. So when she gets her Rubi one day it'll be an auto. It's all good

Generally a 2wd will get around most parts of the beach, but when you hit a spot that it won't, then you are stuck, literally!!!

Even with 4wd you need to lower the tire pressure to about 15psi when the sand gets soft. I've been stuck in the soft sand at the Outerbanks once because I didn't air down.. After I dug it out, I aired down and had no problems after that.

Of course it is not good for the tires to run that low back on pavement so unless the place you go to the beach has a gas station close by you can air back up at, you need to get a portable compressor. I spend a lot of time at the beach here in Florida, I carry a Viair 300p Viair - Your Vital Air Source. If you get 35in tires or bigger you would need a better compressor than the 300.

But I don't air down until I have to, most of the time the beach sand here is hard enough I just run street pressure.

If you like driving stick, go with stick. We bought the 4-dr 6 speed and it's great. Up until a few years ago we always had at least one stick in the driveway. Now having stick again, we realize how much we missed it.

Either way you will love the Jeep And I'm jealous ... I'd like to make a beach run!

Where are you trying to drive on the beach? I've been out on Corolla and it's awesome...I wouldn't do it without 4wd tho. Not there anyway.

I thought I was pretty careful about how I worded my comment on the claim that some actually prefer auto on the trail. I will usually comment about it any time I see it in a thread about making a decision about what vehicle to buy. The decision to buy auto or manual has to do with personal preferences of the buyer that each person has to weigh in the decision not preferences that other people say that people (in general) have. To say that one type is preferred by people in general while trying to advise on a purchase is like putting words into other peoples' mouths. My point is say what you feel about your choice, say how YOU came to that decision. That is helpful to others trying to decide.

I wonder if anybody has actually done a study of rock crawlers to see if there are more auto over standards? Now that would be something to quote rather than make a generalized statement of such.

Anybody who fears using a standard on the trail should use an auto. I think an auto is easier to use. I personally prefer the standard for the control it gives. In sand, on rocks, etc. Whatever your choice is Heather, I hope you enjoy it. That is the most important part of the choice.

If the only use of the car off of pavement is the beach, most likely, either standard or auto will work equally well. Except maybe climbing dunes. Then standard may have some advantages like control of which gear to be in at a certain RPM for one. Also 6 gears vs. 4 gears. People can get into extreme situations in the sand but flat beach is pretty easy.

Whatever your choice is I hope you enjoy getting off road once in a while. After all, why choose a jeep if you will never get off the flat top? Unless you just like how it looks?

I'm set on a 4wd, 4 dr. I have had manual vehicles before and really like the manual Jeeps. I was asking about the transmission because when I was getting the other Jeep fixed the mechanic I went to said he has dealt with many, many Jeep transmissions.

I'll be a Jeep owner again real soon!

I will use my new 09 JK (auto trans) for beach driving. Plenty of soft sand. On other vehicles I've always aired down to 18 or even 15 PSI. But I imgaine I will set off the low pressure alarm on my new jeep. Will that be annoying? and is there any way to easily disable? Also, for beach driving, with the new JKs (Sahara), is there a need for a tranny cooler? Thanks

I have seen a few older jeeps with tired syncros. This might be because of the conditions of rough off road use?? Not sure. I don't get the impression that it is too much more of a problem than a regular street car. Depending on how one downshifts, I suppose a syncro could be worn out sooner rather than later. I try never to shift into first for instance unless my wheels are completely stopped. I'm hoping this will save on the wear of the syncro.

Last standard I owned I got 125K miles on the first clutch and usually get 60K out of a set of brakes. I usually downshift to slow down and then combine it with braking. I am looking forward to a tranny that lasts a long time as I try not to abuse it.

I tow a trailer near the load limit of the jeep at near 3.5K lbs. I have more confidence doing that with a standard as far as wear and tare on the transmission.

I think my Rubi shifts very nicely. Not the tightest shift pattern I've ever experienced but then not terribly loose either. Pretty much what I expected for the type of vehicle that it is.

Worst case I could do like my neighbor and get used to double clutching to save on gear grind in the lower gears. That is if the syncros get bad in time.

I'm not too concerned about that though.
