2wd Engine shut off

Hey everybody Merry Christmas,

Yesterday I was stuck in an icy situation in a parking lot so I switched my jeep to 4wd. Once I was out of the ice, on the road, I just pushed the lever back to 2wd. This instantly shut off the engine, and I had to put the lever in Park and turn the ignition key to start it up again. Is this normal? If it is, why does the engine shut off like that, a safety issue? Thanks...

That is not normal. BTW 4WD on ice is just as slippery as 2WD on ice.
