3.5" lift too much for 33's?

i rushed and bought 17 x 7.5's and put 33's on them about 5 months ago. now doing a lift. i'm considering doing a Rubicon Express 3.5". is that going to make those tires look too small in the wheel well?

I have a buddy at work with a 3.5 RE lift with 35's... looks perfect. thinking maybe the 2.5" might be the better way to go.

not ready to buy new rims and tires since no one makes a 35 inch radial that fits a 7.5 rim.

honest thoughts please and/or pics please.

On a JKU, my opinion is it will look weird, but if 35's are in the plans and you can live with it then go for it.

Honest opinion: To me, 33's look too small on a JKU even without any lift at all. It's what I have now (with 15" wheels and a 1.5" leveling kit). They looked awesome on my 2-door, but now all I can think about is upgrading to 35's, and how quickly I can swing it.

Go for it and if you don't like the look you can always post the tires for sake on Craigslist and once they sell, buy new ones.

Not that you asked but I'd recommend teraflex over RE. RE used to be the best but I feel that many other lift companies have surpassed them. Teraflex control arms are MUCH stronger and will last a lot longer without rebuilding. RE are a PITA to rebuild and to torque properly. This won't be in issue for you for 30-35K miles but when you get there, you'll wish you went another direction. This was not only an issue I ran into (many offroad miles) but one that my buddy also found out (mostly on road miles). The local shop made this point to me on my next vehicle and I went teraflex. WOW. Loved it. Now I have yet another Jeep and I run AEV bc I don't wheel hard anymore. Just moderate trails and lots of backcountry with street being the majority of the miles. Hope that you aren't upset that I'm commenting on this area.

33's an 3.5" lift is gonna look really small. You can fit 37's easily with that setup. I would go no more then 2.5" of lift an even then the 33's could look small

An the 3.5" lift kit isn't even gettin into driveline issues that could/will happen not to mention the cost of added components needed to complete a lift of that size on a jk

There are lots of 35's that will work on a 7.5' wheel just fine...

But as to the original question... I think 3.5 is too much for 35's myself. 35-37 look great on 2.5"...

I have a 3.5 inch lift with 285's which is very close to a 33. I love the look and get compliments all the time. The bigger you go the more power you need and the faster your gas gauge goes down. Sometimes I think about what it might look like with 35's but over all I like this look. Mine are 285/75/16

On my 2 door JK I'm at about 3.5" maybe a little more (2"BB + JKU springs) and run 285/75R16

I have the 3.5 and I did have to do changes with my drive train. I did a transfer drop. I had to put adjustable track bars on the rear and front to get the axle centered perfect again. I did go with the slip joint eliminator and double carden drive shaft so I could put the transfer case back up to normal. Next I am installing the rear upper adjustable control arms to get the correct pinion angle. I will probably do both rear and front. I still have a very small vibe at around 50 mph. That is all I can think of that may be causing it. I balanced all tires and replaced all front drive shaft u joints. The nice thing is you don't have to do it all at once. Easier to afford. That is just my experience. I did just realize you are all talking about a JK and mine is a TJ, not sure if that matters. Best of luck.

I have a 3" (3.5 actual on my softy 2 door) and 305/70/17 KM2s. Actual height on Jeep- 33" tall. I get a little pissy everytime I look at them. Too small IMO.
If you're not rock crawling and/or don't need the clearance I'd consider sticking to a 2.5" lift. Sure it won't look as cool- but you'll avoid possible driveshaft/geometry issues (see above) and your tire size should look about perfect. IMO.

Here is a 2.5" lift over 33s on my 4 door.

I don't think they look too small, but I wouldn't want any more lift than that.



Also, folks put 35s and up on 7.5" wheels all the time.

It will not look good at all. Even 35's (depending on tire and lift manufacturer) is pushing it.

If 35s or larger are in the plans go for it. I had 33 inch swampers on 3.5 rock krawler for a few months. It looked a little small but still performed fine. Now I think my 35s look small. If you are crawling in a jku you've got to raise that belly up. On a JK its not as big of an issue.

nice. bought the 2.5 TF kit (springs/shocks) + trackbar, lower arms and steering stab. will roll the 33's for a while. maybe 35's down the line.

it's a DD with weekend dirt. i think MTH's set up looks fine. my rims are 17 so that'll change the look sligthly...but as far as overall size ratio...i'm cool with it.
