3.73 rear axle ratio

I just bought a new Sport Unlimited. The dealer assures me it has a 3.73 rear axle and I just want to verify as I specifically requested it. The left side of the window sticker says under "Standard Equipment" that a 3.21 rear axle ratio is standard. On the right side of the window sticker it states under the 5-speed automatic w5a580 transmission option "hill descent control, 3.73 rear axle ratio". The vehicle also comes with Trac-Lok limited slip differential, but does not have a tow package. Here is the confusion, I have read elsewhere that the 3.73 rear axle ratio option is a separate option costing $45. This price is not listed on the sticker next to where it states "3.73 rear axle ratio". I am fairly sure it is included because I don't know why else it would list it. Is this option now part of the automatic transmission option? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Request the build sheet from your dealer not the window sticker.

Go to jeeps website and enter the vin, you can see the build sheet there.

Another thing to check it the diff covers. There usually is a little metal tag bolted to the diff cover with 2 bolts that will tell you what gear ratio it is.

I would think you would be able to tell just by driving it. To me there was a big difference between 3.21 and 3.73.

I logged on to the Jeep website and the good news is it lists the 3.73 axle ratio. On another note, the window sticker lists a "368w 7-speaker Infinity sound system including Subwoofer" that cost $395, but the Jeep site only says 6 speaker Infinity sound system. Any idea on this inconsistency?

Where did you find this? I have been looking all over the site and I can't find it.

I went into the owners section to register my car online and it says it was already register. Maybe the previous owner register it and now I can't. But I still can't find the build sheet.

I'm not sure we're you're looking. Under Build Your Own for the Sport S, the option is listed as: "368W 7-Speaker Infinity® Sound Sys Incl Subwoof," then under Option Details:
368-watt 7-speaker Infinity® sound system including subwoofer. Infinity is a registered trademark of Infinity Systems, Inc.
Under the Sport S specs, it says:
PREMIUM SOUND
Surrounded by nature and music. An Infinity® Premium Sound System has seven speakers, including a subwoofer and a 368-watt amplifier that will make your favorite songs sound even better.
Still consistent, though it should probably be made clear that it's an option on the Sport S.

I haven't gone through the whole site, I'm sure; but the only references I see to a 6-speaker system are to the standard, non-Infinity system.

I guess I will have to try to count the speakers in my car. Anyone know where the sub would be located?

In the back cargo section....should be a plastic box with a speaker in it...you can't miss it.

Yup, in the right rear corner of the cargo area just in front of the tailgate.

Another, direct way to tell... (assuming you still have the stock 29" tires)

At 60 MPH:

3.21 = 1850 RPM

3.73 = 2150 RPM

I think the 3.73 was a new no cost option for 2012. Mine was the same way.

There were a bunch of 2012's that had 3.73's on the Sahara's and Sports at no cost (and without tow packages) instead of the normal $50 charge on the window stickers. That started sometime during winter.

Another one of those Chrysler unknowns. Some had it, some didn't.

I've a noob question and I freely admit it but this has me slightly perplexed. Regarding the 3.73s when it's coupled with the heavy duty suspension in the Sahara Unlimited do you notice a difference?

For instance. I have driven the Sport with 373's and driven the base Sahara. But for some reason the Sahara's that I have driven with the 3.73s tend to 'sway' some in the rear going around corners at moderate to lowers speeds - approx 25 mph or less.

I have driven Willies and Rubicons as well and never noticed it and it only seems to affect the Saharas with 3.73. It's noticeable but not dramatic. Does this seem right?

How this old thread from 2012 went from gears to speakers... then from speakers to gears and back to speakers is beyond me. Did you know you're in the 2015 model year?

You guys have me perplexed.

this has not been true for many years

the new auto's are coming with 3.73's. I have yet to see a 2012+ sport suto that didnt have at least 3.73's although I am sure a few exist with 3.21.

times are changing, gone are the days of "sport? it has 3.21's. Rubicon? it has 4.10's"

build sheet is the only way to know for sure. well, that or some simple math

I respectfully disagree. I spent the last year researching and test driving JK/JKUs before buying my '15 Willys and wife's '14 Sport freedom. What I have seen is most of the Sports and Saharas ordered for dealer stock have the 3.21 ratio. My wife's and two of her cousins (a '12 Sahara and '13 Sport) all dealer stock JKUs came with 3.21. I agree that you can't automatically say "because it's a Y model it has Z gears" but I'd bet there are at least as many 3.21 Sports and Saharas as 3.73.

I would bet the vast majority of sports and Sahara models are 3.21. Remember, we're a minority in the jeep world. 95% of people never leave the highway or mall with their jeep.

JK gears as far as I know:
3.21 in stock Sport
3.73 in upgraded Sports
3.73 in tow packages
3.73 in Willys
4.10 in Rubicon

Somewhere folks got 3.73 in Sport models standard but that appears to be an anomaly around 2012.

And when they say "Rear" they really mean both or your transfer case be in a world of hurt in 4WD when with different gearing.

Are you sure about the tow packages? I also thought so but when I looked at a few with the tow package then ran the Vin and several came back with 3.21 ratios?
This Vin shows trailer tow package but 3.21? 1C4AJWAG2EL310060
Also in the new Rubicons you have to make sure and order $495 option to get the 4.10 other wise you get 3.73
With Auto Trans. from what I have seen??.
