30,000 mile maintenance

I went to the dealership sat for an oil change. I had a really good coupon. They said that when I come back for 30,000 I will need to have about 600.00 in services done. They want to clean the throttle body, change trans fluids and a few other things. Is this bs or do I need to have all of it done?

Shocking . . . .

Clean the throttle body yourself. If you've got a manual transmission, the fluid change is literally a drain and fill. Not complicated. Etc.

What you really need to do is look at your owners manual and see what's recommended. If you don't want to do the work yourself, call around to some local shops you trust and ask them what they'll charge to do the same services. I bet it's half of what the dealer wants to charge.

TB cleaning is a waste of money...DIY. My wife got talked into this service which cost us $250.00!!! Pick up some TB cleaner - I use Seafoam Deep Creep and 2 cans of seafoam.

DIY TB cleaning - is simple - Disconnect air box tube connected to the TB. Once you have the TB exposed keep your engine running and spray a few bursts of Seafoam deep creep into the TB. Once you have done this a few times shut the engine off. Now take a paper towel or clean rag and clean the TB butterfly valve on both sides to clean any carbon deposits on the butterfly valve.

Once clean reconnect everything.

NEXT STEP - park your JK in a well ventilated area. Next locate your Brake booster line (large black cylinder - up against the drivers side firewall). Start up your engine, disconnect the brake booster line (larger rubber hose) from the brake booster (you will hear sucking noise. Don't worry!)

Now take your can of seafoam and dip your brake booster line hose into the can and allow the motor to suck in small amts several times. The engine will chug and almost stall. Now when you are down to about 1/2 can of seafoam dip your brake booster line fully into the can an allow a pile of seafoam to be sucked up and stall your motor. (If the motor does not stall then turn it off quickly).

Let the JK sit for about 10 mins to allow the seafoam to clean the upper end of your motor of all the carbon build up. After 10 mins start it up....You will see an awesome white smoke show and let it idle till most of the white smoke disappears. Then jump in the JK and go for a good spirited ride.

The final can of seafoam dump into your tank when your tank is near empty to get a good concentrated dose of cleaner through your fuel system. This my friend is basically a TB & fuel system cleaning that the dealership would do and charge over $250. When it takes about 1/2hr of your time and about +$20.00 in TB cleaning products & fuel cleaning additives!
