Hey guys, I read the AMAZING thread on largest tires on stock JKs but I had a few specific questions...
I found 10th anniversary rubi rims for sale. If I run those (lack of backspacing) can I still run 33s without rubbing? or do i have to have the 4.5 inches of backspacing? Also are 33s much better looking than 32s or is it negligible?
Finally, if i ran the rugged ridge hurricane fenders that give an extra 1in clearance, would i still need the rims with backspacing?
If you run a 255/80/17 (pizza cutter) then the tires will be inside the fender well and you won't need wheel spacers or a wheel with less backspacing, but you may rub if disconnected at full flex inside the fender, so a flat fender will help out for sure. If you run a 285 or wider tire then a 1.5"-1.75" wheel spacers will be needed or you will rub when turning lock to lock.
Also with no lift, wheel spacers or a wheel with less backspacing and a wide tire with stock fenders you will definately rub while disconnected off road as the tires will stick out past the fenders 1"-2".
I'm not a fan of 33's without at least a leveling kit as the tire looks crammed into the wheel well and you loose functionability as mentioned above, unless of course you've either trimmed your fenders or went to flat ones.
Thanks for the heads up! I am thinking about doing a mid size front bumper where you'll be able to see the tires and i dont think the pizza cutters will look too great like that. I may have to forgo the rubi rims and get something that i can put a little meat on the tires with. Opinion with this?
Well you could use wheel spacers with the stock rims, but they are also only 7.5"wide. Some will put a 12.5" wide tire on those wheels, but usually the wheel is narrower than the tires recommended wheel width.
I run 305/70/16 (33's) and my tires equate to just over 12" wide on level8 Trackers 8.5"X16 with 4.5" of backspacing. I do have a Teraflex leveling kit installed which allows room for flexing and keeps the Jeep looking proportionate.
An 8.5"-9" wide wheel is perfect for a wider tire.
looks nice! do you have a pic from the front to see what the width looks like?305s are sweet, so i'd like to see what the wider tire looks like since i plan on going to a shorter front bumper where you'll see the tires more.
I am going to level mine it only needs 3/4" and going to put a spacer and a 265/70/18 on ours. If you don't mind answering what brand tire are you using?
If you are referring to me I'm using General Grabber AT2 which are also a studdable severe winter rated tire (snow flake emblem on them).
This will be my second winter for them and so far they have been great in all conditions, but I wouldn't take them in deep mud, a mud terrain is what you want if you like mudding.
If you are staying with 33's then a leveling kit is all you need.
As I said above I run a Teraflex coil spacer leveling kit and it's been on my Jeep for over 2 years now and has performed great for me and it's only around $170.00. Everything you need comes with the kit.
I just installed Cooper ST/Maxx 255/80R17s (spec is 32.8", but actual mounted on the Jeep is just a hair under 32") on my stock (sagged a bit from armor) height JKU. Stock wheels and fender flares. I haven't had any contact yet, though my air-dam is long gone.
I have been offroad and disconnected with them - but only had them for a week so haven't had a chance to get a lot of pics:
As you can see, when stuffing into the fender they clear without any problem.
