3rd Brake Light Relo Mod for $8.

$8 dollars and about an hour later and I'm done with this mod. I bought a cheap 2" light from tractor supply co.

Blazer LED Multi-Reflective 2 in. Round Clearance & Marker Red - 1600031 | Tractor Supply Company

Then I decided to saw the factory third brake light tower completely off.

With that out of the way I could do away with the spare tire spacer. I cut about 1/2" off the rubber spare tire bump stops.

Then I spliced into the factory brake light wiring, wrap the light with some hocky stick fabric tape to keep it snug in the center cap whole.

The light is a little brighter red than the factory brake lights so I taped it off and spray a single light coat of VHT night shades on it.

And the finished product....

Pretty happy with the final result plus by being able to do away with the spare tire spacer it allows my spare to rest slightly on the rear bumper and takes some pressure off the gate. The result is no squeaks at all when going over bumps. Plus I think it cleans the rear up nicely by getting rid of that third brake light arm. What do you guys think???

That looks pretty good !!

Resting some on the bumper, takes a lot of load off the gate, but you'll still need pressure from the bumpstops, to eliminate vibration and do more gate weld preservation

I like the look of that. However, just a question for the legality experts here. Is there any legal issue with altering the third brake light?

I'd like to actually raise my tire slightly so that when I use my bike rack I can get the tailgate open. When I tow my pop-up, we usually take mountain bikes and I use a dual hitch extension do-dad to mount the bike rack. It totally interferes with the tailgate opening.

I want to raise the spare just enough to clear the rack, but am afraid I will have to also raise the brake light. If I went this route, and stay legal, it fixes my problem!

Thanks for any advice. And slick install job.

well, how about a little bump here. A little research on my part seems to indicate that the third brake light needs to be higher than the brake lights. Anyone know the rules on this? Are they federal or state controlled? Seems like these must be federally regulated.

We don't have vehicle insp. here in Kansas so I can't answer that bud! Mines alittle higher but don't know the specifics on the laws.

Fed law over 40 years ago said the "eye level safety light" could be no lower than the top edge, of the vehicle STOP LIGHTS, but

You know how states play with Fed laws, I'm afraid insurance Co.'s are the ones to be careful of, I won't touch my "3rd light" it's fine-

Jimbo,

That sounds like sound advice. I'll have to follow the relocation process others have done when they raise their spare.

Thanks!

Well I guess that my argument (not that it is worth anything) would be that my new location is better than the factory one that is hidden behind the larger tire.
