4.10s or 4.56s gears?

I have a 13 jk automatic and I want to go up to 33" duratracs. I have the 3.21s and I was wanting some opinions on whether to go with 4.10s or 4.56 for a regear.

If 33s are DEFINETELY the end goal, then 4.10 are plenty as they are great with my 35s. But if spending the cash, then KNOW that is where you are going to stop. I am already starting to second guess if I am going to step up to 37s for summer use and keep 35s for winter....

Yeah I don't think I'll go much higher than 33's. I called a shop in the area and the guy said 4.10s might be a bit hard to find and if I wouldn't mind going with 4.56s. My only concern is the revs on the highway. I checked out the ratio chart and 4.56s would put me at around 2700 revs compared to the 4.10s at about 2400 revs.

It depends on how much you value performance - I have stock 4.10 gears and 32 inch tires. Most of the time, my Jeep struggles to get out of its own way if the tach has anything less than 2500 rpm on it. I understand that's partly the engine (I've a 3.6...god bless those with the 3.8) and partly the vehicle weight, but good lord is it annoying at times.

I understand it's a compromise and that it means I need to row a few more gears to keep the engine where it needs to be. Will you notice a big difference going from 3.21 to 4.10 - yes, I should think so. You really don't need more for 33s unless you want it or figure you'll go bigger.

Yeah I agree with you it seems like 4.56 for 33s would be overkill. I won't be doing too much heavy duty offroading so I hope 4.10s will be available to get.

I personally think a 4.56 will rev too high. I think the 4.10 ervs a bit high with 32s. 33s will be perfect and 35 may be just slightly to low. With my future 35s, I'll stick with 4.10s and maybe move to 4.56 IF i feel under-geared. Here in CO, I may feel under-geared at altitude.

Caveat- I only feel it revs too high on the highway (long trips) and not running around town or short highway trips. I suggest 4.10s, especially on flat land and if you are on the highway a lot.

A regear is usually not needed until you step up to 35" tires. I'd drive it for a while and see how it does stock.

I honestly don't think you need to regear. 4.56 is way over kill.

Yeah I wouldn't be regearing anytime soon. I'll probably wait off while until the stock tires wear out before making any decisions.

The Rubicon comes with 4.10 gears and 32" tires. I don't see any reason to go 4.56 unless you plan on going with bigger tires in the future. I'm running 4.56 gears with 37" tires.

I don't know what your local shop wants to charge you for doing gears, but if your JK doesn't have lockers or a D44 up front, you might look into getting takeoff axles from a Rubicon that already has lockers and 4.10 gears in them. It will be a bit more than the cost to do gears, but if you have a D30 front axle now, the D44 will have stronger ring and pinion gears in it.

If you decide to do an axle swap, it is easier to swap axles than to install gears. I have a set of Rubicon axles off my 2012 if you are interested.

Don't bother. 3.21s handle 33s just fine.

I have pretty much the same setup (3.6L, 32" tires, 4.10 gearing) with the 5 speed auto...and I think my JKR hauls ass. There is no comparison to the TJ it replaced...or the YJ before that. I feel like I am in a muscle car now. Of course, I don't mind stepping on the gas. I guess how you feel about the performance is probably influenced to some extent by what you were driving previously.
