4.88/5.13 install

I just received another install quote, but was told I would get better mileage with 4.88 vs 5.13 with 35s unless I planned on moving bigger. For me mileage is the biggest factor as I will soon be moving and it will be a longer drive to work each day. I've looked at the charts and all the various experiences with so many people claiming one vs the other. I ha e a 2010 unlimited that came with3.73.

I was quoted $550 to my door for gears and install kits. Labor was quoted at $350 per axle plus fluid. No warranty

If they do the work it is $2000 for gears, install lots, bearings and seals, labor and a 12 month warranty.

I have 27k in miles, are new bearings really needed?

Which option do you all think is the best? I'm in the Austin area. SLC quoted me $2100 with all of the above plus sleeves.

Thanks for the input

Ya kind of what I was thinking too. I want to know why I can order gears so cheap, but supposedly these shops can't. If I can tell em where to order them at a discount, why can't they do that and keep the warranty?

They have to cover themselves basically. With 27K on the clock, you may not need a master install kit which has new seals and bearings, but at the same time, they may be bad. They have no idea until the axle is apart and everything is pulled.

The small shop isn't going to have the same buying power as some place you find online, so sometimes they can't get the same deal from the manufacturer that you can online.

I'm curious, what gears you're getting for that price you mentioned online and what kind of gears the shop is wanting to use.

If your getting a good quality name brand gear set and a complete install kit, then a warranty on the parts isn't a big concern. But I would think every "good" shop would stand behind their work. You can't expect them to stand behind "your" parts.

I think the average price is right at $1,000 and axle from most places, for parts and labor.

The quote was from NRdge didn't talk brand, I was asking for ballpark costs to give me an idea what I was looking at. I know they carry Yukon and a couple others.

They should just call and order from the online place to get a better deal. Haha

Just read your original post again...$550 for gears and install kit. If that's for both axles, I personally would run away from those. That's maybe a price you could find on a per axle setup.

Yukon gears are a good brand. I'm probably missing your quote because I was thinking of the "Master install kit". So if your getting both for 550 and the shop will install them for 350 plus fluid per axle, that's a darn good deal.

It may depend on the "Deal" and the gear ratio-

My Set of Yukons with "master kits/brgs/lubelockers and juice was close to $900 bucks

That's an insane price. Yukon isn't my first choice in gears, but wow...

What other brands to you suggest? So I guess that means I should run with the deal?

My preference is for Motive, Nitro or Superior and in that order. Yukon gears aren't bad. I would never recommend their aftermarket shafts and some other stuff they have, but they make a decent gear. As long as it's not Yukon's off brand (US Standard) that they're selling, then yes I would go for it at that price.

They're not bad either. About on par with Yukon/Alloy USA.

I'm putting 5.13's in my 2011. Its the 6 spd and I have 35's right now. I know I'll be over geared with the 35's but I do plan to go bigger soon.

Don't get too caught up with gear brand when talking about the JK. The majority of aftermarket gears for JKs, regardless of the name on the box is made by CHA gear. There are only a couple companies making their own. Just FYI.

I have 4.88s/6-speed/37s and I am happy with my setup.

2000k is too freaking much. Any shop that knows what the heck they are doing will do it right and there will be no worry about problems. Screw the warranty and just go to someone who knows what they are doing. I have g2's right now and they are rolling great.
I would get a master install kit. Even the best person and mess up a bearing while pulling them and not mean to. Better to be safe than sorry on that.
