4lo slipped out??

Yesterday I was driving down a secluded part of the beach. I was in 4hi going about 25-30mph and everything was cool. Was about to get into an ugly stretch of the beach that requires 4lo and slower speeds. I put tranny in neutral (automatic tranny by the way), slowed down to about 3 mph and pulled the lever into 4lo and then shifted back to D. Went for about 30 seconds and then heard a "pop" and a grinding sound. Stopped and put in neutral and shifted into 4hi and it ran fine. Went back into 4lo and it worked fine for the rest of the trip. It is possible for it to slip out of 4hi? Or is it possible that 4lo was not fully engaged from pulling the lever? Could there be problem in the t-case?

Sometimes the gears might not line up just right. I wouldn't be concerned unless it starts happening regularly.

Of course you CAN"T FORCEIT, but

When you do-"SLIP" it into 4lo, make sure you pull the xfer case lever ALL THE WAY BACK--then it'll stay-

Mine has done that to--gotta be consistant in 4lo engagement !!

On my last Jamboree I had this issue happen a few times, and I also had a tough time getting it into 4lo.

I have since resolved all the issues by replacing the crappy cable and linkage with this:

Heavy Duty JK Cable Shifter Upgrade | Advance Adapters

Hope this helps.

THANKS!!! I'm going to order this just to save me the headache in the long run. I'd rather upgrade BEFORE the stock cables bust.

Yeah, actually I have seen it break on a few people while I was wheeling.

Much better to replace now, then to be stuck on the trail.

My guess is I failed to pull the lever back all the way. But I will be doing the cable linkage upgrade asap. It would be just my luck for the damn thing to bust on me while I'm 60 miles down the beach.

Isn't it possible to go under the Jeep and manually pull the lever to engage the transfer case? So, really, if the cable busts, can you just follow where it goes and yank on what it is pulling?

good to know for newbies like myself. learn something new all the time.

on a side note, right after I turn my engine off I put into 1st and once it made a pop noise like you described and went out of gear when I let my foot off the break (yes I had e brake applied before hand), guess I hadn't fully engaged it because it has never happened since...

Yes, you can, PHYSICALLY move the xfer case lever, from underneath, it's a PITA, but can and is done-

Better to have several of the plastic bushings in your GLOVE box, just in case and you can getem from the dealer for $.50 centavos ea--I've got (5) but never needed em--

Good luck-

Yes it is technically possible. But its a pain. Also, its even harder if your stuck in water and mud.
