My 2012 Ribicon shifts flawlessly. I shift more slowly than I do in my Mini but it goes into all the gears really smoothly. 4th is directly down from 3rd, but you need to nudge it a little to the right to go from 5th to 6th. If yours is popping out of gear you MUST take it back to the shop...something is seriously wrong and will only get worse. Having the 4:10 rear end I go throught the gears pretty quickly.

I've had my fourth gear pop out a few times, it always seems to be when it's cold out (below freezing) and it seems to go away once all the components warm up. Still really annoying and I'm considering taking it in on a cold morning to the dealer. I have 4.10 gears and new pentastar.

What are the 12th thru 14th digits in your VIN ( eg, 163xxx in 1C4AJWAGXCL163449 )? It'd be interesting to see if this problem happens within a range of VINs

no problems with my six speed, although it doesn't seem to be "straight" back....just a little over to the right. once in awhile if i get in a hurry i'll miss it but not often. i stay in 6th scottmich...you must not have a 2012. love the 4:10 and the penstar with the six speed.

I agree and this is the reason I bought my Jeep. It's one of the few
vehicles still offered with a stick. I have the 4th gear problem at least
a few times a day. I have also had it pop out of gear a few times.
Dealer is telling me it's the boot (since there is a TSB), but I'll be
very surprised if that fixes it and I WILL test drive it before heading
home. I haven't gotten the call yet that the part is in.

Hello,
I have 2011 wrangler unlimited sahara with 6 speed manual with ~6000 miles on it. Owned it for 6 month.

I have the same grinding problem on 4th gear from time to time(rarely once a week, always and only on 4th gear, not related to cold) and on cold days after the vehicle was outside several hours, the 4th gear simply pops out with no grinding sound whatsoever once the clutch is released. The problem goes away after ~30min of driving assuming after the problem components fully warms up.

I am thinking of taking it to the dealer, the problem is if its above freezing, the problem is not there or just happens once/twice the first time.

2. I have other problem with the buttons on steering wheel not working for about a month now(for audio controls and trip display info), the cruise control buttons still work fine.

3. There is a third problem I need to mention to the dealer as well, once its cold the tire pressure warning light lights up, I have checked the pressure in the tires and the pressure is 100% fine in all 4 tires, but the warning light is wrongly on when cold. - happened several times. Funny but its almost an indicator what the 4th gear will pop out.

I use 6th on the Interstate all the time and have had no problem maintaining speed with the cruse. I have the 3:73 rear end and believe it helps some rather then the 3:21 or what ever it is.

You just said "not related to cold" then "in cold days" ??

Did I miss something?

Manual does say cold wether will affect clutch performance.

Tires- what pressure you keep the tires at?

I've heard that.

My boot was replaced per Car fax.

Wondering if the PO had issues.
Myself- have not had an issue yet (knock on wood)

Make sure to check your spare tire too. There is a tire pressure monitor in there too.

Hi guys,

got the jeep back from the dealer yesterday, the transmission is not yet fixed, they put some parts on back order, should take them 5 days to get the parts, as I was told.

In the meantime started to have same popping out issues on 2nd and 6th gear, when cold, but can still drive on 1st, 3rd and 5th fine.

2. They have fixed the steering wheel buttons, now working. There was a short somewhere, wires needed to be fixed and fuse replaced after as it was just keeping on blowing due to short

3. They replaced one of the tires pressure sensor as it was faulty, no more tire pressure warning light.

The 2011 jeep still has less than 7000 miles on it, hope I can get back the feeling the new vehicle should be reliable after they fix the transmission.

I vowed I would not own a Wrangler with an automatic. Sorry to hear members have issues with the 6 speed. Back in 2010-early 2011 it was popping out of 2nd. Now it seems the problem is back, just in a different gear.

Our 2012 Artic is going in this week for popping out of 4th gear, it does it at least once
a day, I've noticed that that gear feels different than all the rest does not seem to
lock up like the others.

I've been shifting very carefully since I first started this thread and have had much better luck with the 4th gear grinding. For anyone having this issue try shifting slowly and forcefully from third to forth gears. Be careful to not let out the clutch until you are fully into gear. Take your time with it, if you rush it, it will grind. Since I started really paying attention while shifting i have not had the problems. Give it a try before you go to the dealer...

I have had the same problem! I purchased my '12 JK Sahara Arctic on the 8th and I have experience the shifter popping out of 4th gear and grinding while upshifting and down shifiting.

Good thing I have off tomorrow. I will be doing research, printing things off, and going to the dealer first thing in the morning!

I'm at the dealer in less than 8 hours for this problem!!!

I would suggest that there is something wrong with your transmission. I believe that some '12's were underfilled with trans oil from the factory - sounds like that may be the culprit. My '12 shifts better than any manual trans car i've driven. While the throws are long, the gates are so well define and the shift action so crisp.

Take it to the (st)dealership.

Would an under filled transmission cause the shifter to pop out of 4th gear?

Okay everybody ....

I have been at the dealership for 25 minutes. Only have another 35 -45 minutes before they can get to my rig.
I will keep you all updated as to what they say about the popping out of 4th gear problem.

On top of being pissed since last night because it only has 660 miles, the tech I explained this all to looked at me like I was speaking samali or something. I expect this to get fixed but don't think it will happen.

I will post again when new info arises.

Okay. I have the answer for my rig. I am embarrassed to say this.

After having it looked at there was no issue with my transmission or anyparts within.

The problem was the boot over the shifter was too low forcing it out of gear.

Found out my rig's build date was 12/07/2011.

Good luck to all others
