4th gear issues

Is anyone else with a '12 six speed having issues with 4th gear. I have been driving manual transmissions my whole life and have never "missed" a gear so often in my life. You know that LOUD grind you get when you try to go into a gear without the clutch down.

Anyway, I get this at least 1 to 2 times a day ALWAYS on 4th gear. What am I doing wrong? Why is this gear a problem to get in to while I have never once had an issue with the other gears.

Also lately, I have noticed one or two times the trasmission poping OUT of 4th gear on it's own. Anyone else had this happen?

I'm not a newbie to stick shifts so what is the deal here!

Are you chewing gum? 4th is straight back from 3rd.

The syncros aren't made to do quick shifts. Could you be shifting too quick/ slamming it into gear? I know I shift my jeep at least twice as slow as my BMW. How cold is the transmission? When cold they don't always go into gear well, so if you make it do it anyway, you can cause a grind

Im not sure if it'll help but try double clutching. Aka be in 3rd shifting into neutral, let out the clutch, push the clutch back in, and go for 4th. You had to do that on old porsches all the time. Maybe it'll work

Maybe time to trade for a auto, as they don't grind and will last longer without a clutch repair. And the computer is smarter then most people when it comes to shifting!

Maybe I will try to double clutch it. Could be that I'm flipping it back into 4th too quickly. I know when I'm aware of it I will move it slowly back into 4th and make sure i have it all the way back, and it seems ok.

Only thing I can figure is I'm letting out the clutch before I have it all the way back rearward into gear - but like I said I don't have the same issue with 2nd or 6th??? Thanks for the tips though, I will do that.

I know exactly what you mean and it seems as if this is going to be a manufacturer issue. Had my 12 in the shop for 7 days while they goofed around with it waiting for parts for the transmission. I don't have the paperwork in front of me but it seemed like major work and calls to the factory etc.
Same issue - popping out of 4th and grinding.

Take it in, make 'em fix it and don't let them BS you about a rental. Good luck.

Mine works fine now, BTW.

I C - can you let me know what repair they performed of if there is a service bulletin associated with it? I'd love to have that info when I take it to the shop for the next oil change. Thanks

Just went out and looked - they replaced the 3-4 shift assembly. No bulletin just pesky 4th gear popping and grinding - I also thought it was my rusty gear shifting until it was obviously not.

There's another treath about the manual transmission popping out of 4th gear. The good news is that it's not you. The bad news is that it's a real issue.

I've gotten in the habit of shifting to 4th with a bit of force. That seems to have reduced the frequency of how often it happens.

Those that had it fixed - how did you go about doing it? Seems like one of those issues where they can't replicate the problem at the dealership. Seems unlikely to me that they would do such an expensive warranty repair on just my word alone.

How exactly do you go through the Chrysler hoops?

...also, I should have specified, it has only popped out of 4th gear one time that I know of, and maybe a second that I'm not positive on.

the grinding when shifting into 4th is the problem I am getting regularly. If I am thinking about it I can take my time and really push it nice and far back into gear before releasing the clutch and can avoid the grind. It's when I'm not thinking about it and shifting normally-to-quick when it occurs.

i could almost shift if i really held down into it and slammed into gear. almost as if i wasn't using the clutch. downshifting into 4th, always would grind.

i have been driving standards for 29 yrs-so i knew that it wasn't me. i was fortunate that it would grind for the dealer's mechanic.

you shouldn't have to put up with this. mine is now shifting smoothly and i love it.

Your shift into fourth should not grind at all. You should take it in and let the technicians drive it.

I had a similar issue on my 08 with grinding when shifting into 5th. It would only happen every third shift of so, but when I took it in it happened while the tech was driving it and they replaced my 5th gear synchros. Shifts smooth now.

When I first took delivery of my 12, I was having trouble with it popping out of 4th gear. My problem was easy to solve: I had my i-phone down in the change well directly behind the shift lever. When I'd shift down into 4th, it would jam into the i-phone and not go fully into 4th. I'm surprised it didn't bust the phone! I have one of those heavy duty Otterbox phone protector covers, so it did it's job, I guess.

Now I put the phone in the drink holder and it shifts fine!

I wish your problem was as easy to solve, but it doesn't sound that way. My guess would be any one of these:

Bad 4th gear syncro.
Bad shift fork.
Bad shift rail.
Something not right in the shift tower.

I read some past thread about somebody having trouble with the shift boot binding things up while coming down into 4th gear. Hard to believe as I looked at my boot and its pretty thin and flexible. Maybe check that.

The good news is, it's warranty work. It's still a hassle, but they'll make it right.

Good luck.

yeah, they tried the whole 'shift boot' thing. well on the 12s, the boot is a soft piece of pleather-not the rigid plastic from previous years. but the techs still had to go through their flow chart and waste my time ordering a new 'boot'.

As stated, the tech drove it and they had the same problem - no discussion needed. If they don't experience it I assume you have to move into pleasant adamant mode and cite your knowledge of this being an issue documented on this forum, and I'm sure others, and you would really like them to fix it and whats the number for the Jeep rep.

No problems with mine so far. However, shifting into 4th "feels" different then other gears. Maybe less positive, may be my imagination since I keep reading about 4th gear problems. I did pull the boot further up the shaft to see if it makes any difference. None noted. Anyway, I'll keep watching and see if a problem develops. No grinding on any gears at all. Only have about 350 miles on it so far.

Well, this is a disturbing trend. My plan was to get a 2012 JK Rubicon 6-sp in the next few weeks but this is making me think twice before buying.

Perhaps it would be helpful to determine if the vehicles having the problem were all built at the same time or the VINs are within a range. Would you guys mind sharing the first three digits in your VIN number sequence ( eg, 163xxx in 1C4AJWAGXCL163449 )?

No problems so far. For me, I end up in 4th whether I go straight down from 3rd or 5th :P! I think its just me... I have never driven a 6 spd manual before (my previous was a 5 spd manual)..so still getting used to shifting to 6th. I figure I have to give a very slight nudge to right after I get to Neutral while going down from 5th.

I have no problems hiting the right gear when shifting. My first 3 are 174. And, I would not have this thread make any difference in what trans you choose. Go for the 6-spd if that is what you want. I love mine totally.

Thanks for the VIN number. I'm hoping that it's been fixed in the cars with the latest build dates.

Trust me, it's not a choice between the auto and the manual transmission; there's no way I'm buying anything w/ an auto transmission ever again. I made that mistake once before and regretted it for the next 214,000 miles.

My first 3 are 1C4. Built in late November (22nd or 23rd.) I have about 1100 miles now and I must say it has happened less and less. It hasn't happened in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed!

How about the first 3 digits in the number sequence at the end of the VIN number (12th thru 17th position)? For example, 163xxx in 1C4AJWAGXCL163449

Does anyone really use 6th gear? I hate that gear. I can't stay 70mph in 6th. Just a small hill will slow down to 60-65. Make sense?
